Flows observed in open channels are usually turbulent. The word "turbulent" describes a motion in which an irregular velocity fluctuation (mixing or eddying motion) is superimposed on the main stream motion. The essential characteristic of turbulent flow is that the turbulent fluctuations are random in nature.

If Reynold's rule of averaging is used, the Navier-Stokes equations for laminar flow may be transformed into the Reynold's equations, which hold true for turbulent mean motion. This study was conducted to investigate analytically and experimentally the relationship between the rate of flow of water through porous material and the streaming current and streaming potential induced by this flow. The effect of dissolved salts in the permeating solution and the size of the soil particles was also investigated.

Results and conclusions of this study are summarized as follows:

  1. A modified procedure using the appropriate delay to insure stead state conditions was used for the measurements of both streaming current and streaming potential.

The method accounts for the non-linear relationship between weight and moment capacity for both beams and columns. "Using the known moments obtained from the moment distribution solution, the extended moment-area equations are used to check whether or not delta x, delta y, delta theta are truly zero, or are any other quantity they are supposed to be. In order to get a reasonably correct answer, a solution must meet both the elastic checks and the static checks for their equilibrium and compatibility functions. Several variables are considered, namely, the ratio of loads to each other, the distance between wheels, and ratio of one span length to the other. "Tests were performed in order to determine the effect of submerged jets injecting water into the base of the hydraulic jump. The jump was studied in terms of the following properties: specific energy of the flow leaving the hydraulic jump, length of the hydraulic jump, tailwater depth, and wave formation properties. These properties for the hydraulic jump with submerged jets were compared to the natural hydraulic jump.

"The literature on swell and swell pressure in expansive soils was reviewed. The effect of initial moisture content on the swelling properties of untreated Putnam silt loam was investigated by performing free swell and swell pressure tests on specimens with varying initial moisture contents compacted to a constant dry density. The free swell tests were conducted by allowing the samples to swell freely under a low load (the weight of the plunger and the porous stone in the swelling apparatus) and measuring the volume change that resulted. "Head loss due to fluid friction was measured in smooth conduits of rectangular cross section. The data covers the laminar and turbulent range. Results were compared with previous theoretical and empirical data.

The customary practice of calculating head loss in non-circular conduits by use of the friction factor obtained on an “equivalent” circular pipe was discussed. "This investigation was conducted to determine the shrinkage properties of a clay soil whose structure had been artificially altered in the laboratory. Various percentages of dispersing and flocculating agent were added to the soil and the shrinkage curves plotted.

The shrinkage curves of the chemically treated soil were compared with those of the untreated soil. "The Terzaghi theory of consolidation and the assumption of his theory, pore pressure and effective stress, secondary compression and rheology were all reviewed and discussed. Eight compacted unsaturated samples made from Clarksville silty clay (CL) under different compaction efforts and moisture contents were subjected to consolidation load increments. Each load increment was maintained for 24 hours. An extra compacted sample was loaded for one month to investigate secondary compression.

"This paper reports the results of an investigation conducted to establish the effect of structure on the consolidation characteristics of a clay soil. Soil structure was caused to form in the soil by the addition of electrolytes to flocculate and disperse the clay fraction of the soil.


Consolidation tests were performed on specimens of the treated soil prepared at moisture contents well above the liquid limit of the soil. "The primary purpose of this investigation was to determine the effect of sodium pentachlorophenol on activated sludge. An additional objective was to determine the toxicity of sodium pentachlorophenol to minnows.

All activated sludge units were grown on a glucose and mineral nutrient waste. In addition, a unit acclimated to 100 and 250 mg/1 of sodium pentachlorophenol was also studied. "A slope in an over-consolidated, fissured clay was analyzed by the Swedish Method of Slices.

Values of cohesion (c) and angles of friction (Ø) were determined by three different types of direct shear tests (undrained, drained and residual).

Factors of safety (functions of c and Ø) indicated that the direct shear test parameter gave a factor of safety approximately four times that represented by failure conditions in the field. Drained tests gave a factor of safety nearly 2.3 times the value represented by field conditions. The conclusion is made that these two tests are of limited value for slope stability …

Sixty-nine models were constructed and loaded to failure on a foundation of sand using various combinations of size and depth of model and column size. Load - deformation data and failure loads were recorded.

"A method for analyzing single and multi-span gabled frames using analysis charts is presented. This method requires considerably fewer computations than methods previously used (such as the moment distribution and slope-deflection methods). Analysis charts are presented for single gabled frames having fixed or pinned ends at ground level, and charts are also presented which can be used to efficiently analyze multi-gabled frames.
