Experimental Investigation Of Free Field Conditions In Tanks To Be Used In Interaction Studies, Clark P. Sanger May 1965

Experimental Investigation Of Free Field Conditions In Tanks To Be Used In Interaction Studies, Clark P. Sanger

Civil Engineering ETDs

Experiments to determine the effects of boundary friction losses on static and dynamic vertical stress transmission and to determine the stress-strain relationship of standard 20-30 Ottawa sand in 8-inch-I.D. tanks to be used in burial structure interaction studies are presented. In these tests the tank height, boundary condition, sand density, and overpressure rise time were varied. The use of a greased rubber membrane proved to be a reliable method of minimizing the boundary friction losses thus creating a strain field that was independent of the tank height. Vertical stress transmission was not affected by the overpressure load rate. The stress-strain …

Tests Of A Suggested Piezometric Method For Determining Hydraulic Conductivity Of Saturated Soils, K. R. Channarasappa May 1965

Tests Of A Suggested Piezometric Method For Determining Hydraulic Conductivity Of Saturated Soils, K. R. Channarasappa

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

A major factor in the design of drainage systems is the hydraulic conductivity of the soil strata to be drained. Various methods for measuring the hydraulic conductivity of soils in both the field and the laboratory have been devised. In many cases, however, laboratory methods fail to give reliable data since the natural field conditions under which flow actually takes place cannot be duplicated in the laboratory. Hence a need exists for a field method for measuring hydraulic conductivity of soils in situ. When a large number of tests are to be performed in a given location, a simple, quick, …

The physical setting of the Logan River Drainage Basin is first described with emphasis on the hydrologic and climatic factors that made the river an economic and social benefit.

The historical development of the river by man is then traced, and changes in water use patterns are pointed out. Methods used to administer water rights as water use patterns change is then described.

Legal controversies over water rights on the river are examined and methods of solving problems analyzed. A recent law suit between Logan City Corporation and the Logan River Water Users Association is examined in detail and the …

Flume Study Of The Effect Of Concentration And Size Of Roughness Elements On Flow In High-Gradient Natural Channels, Mohamed Wafaie Abdelsalam May 1965

Flume Study Of The Effect Of Concentration And Size Of Roughness Elements On Flow In High-Gradient Natural Channels, Mohamed Wafaie Abdelsalam

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In recent years investigators have given increased attention to flow in natural, high-gradient, rough, open channels. Studies include work in both the laboratory and in the field. Solutions to the problem are still incomplete; however, continued attention by investigators is needed to answer many questions. Using a laboratory flume, the writer studied one of the questions concerning the relative importance of gross velocity fluctuations versus turbulent mixing, and the ranges of each under different ranges of submergence and kineticity of flow. In the different ranges, the effect of size and concentration of the roughness elements was studied.

Water Budget Of Bear River Delta, Chia Chu Hsieh May 1965

Water Budget Of Bear River Delta, Chia Chu Hsieh

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study was made to prepare a mean annual water budget of the Bear River Delta, Utah and to determine the average annual outflow from the area into the Great Salt Lake. Solution of the hydrologic continuity equation was the analytical method used in determining the budget. Outflow to the lake was obtained as the residual between all items of inflow and other items of outflow. Three budgets were made using different techniques of estimating some of the items in the equation in order to serve as comparison checks on the final value of outflow to the lake. The time …

Buckling Strength Of Titanium Alloy Columns In The Elastic And Inelastic Range, Richard O. Rintoul

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this study is to find experimentally the buckling strength of titanium alloy (Ti.-6Al.-4V.) columns and to determine a suitable equation to be used in the design of titanium columns in the elastic and inelastic range.

Effective length over radius of gyration ratios of from 178 to 16.1 were studied. High strength steel plates with cylindrical radii milled in the faces served as column ends while cylindrical radii ends were milled on the columns. SR-4 strain gages were used at the mid-points of all columns to determine lateral deflection and predict a theoretical buckling stress. Actual column loads …

Investigation Of The Use Of Optics In The Analysis Of Structures, Jimmy D. Hahs Jan 1965

Investigation Of The Use Of Optics In The Analysis Of Structures, Jimmy D. Hahs

Masters Theses

"This study was made to determine the feasibility of the use of optics in the analysis of structures. Since the curvature of a beam due to a loading condition is a function of the moment, a measure of this curvature is a measurement of the moment.

This study used the relationship between object size and image size formed by a concave or convex reflective surface to determine the radius of curvature and the moment at the point.

Overhanging simply supported beams of plexiglass with concentrated loads at various positions were used to demonstrate the developed optical theory. Optical measurements were …

Epoxy Resin Admixture For Concrete, Kuo-Chu Hu Jan 1965

Epoxy Resin Admixture For Concrete, Kuo-Chu Hu

Masters Theses

"This thesis describes laboratory tests on concrete having epoxy as an admixture. Cylinders for compression and elastic modulus tests were cured under two different curing conditions, standard laboratory cure and a simulated job cure. Beams cured under laboratory conditions were tested for flexural strength. Test results show the compressive strength increases with an increase of epoxy content for job curing conditions. However, compressive and flexural strengths of specimens cured under laboratory conditions show a slight decrease. The elastic modulus of concrete containing epoxy also decreases in comparison to ordinary concrete"--Abstract, page ii.

The Effect Of Nickel On Activated Sludge, James Robert Matthews Jan 1965

The Effect Of Nickel On Activated Sludge, James Robert Matthews

Masters Theses

"The primary objective of this investigation was to determine the effect of nickel on activated sludge over a comprehensive range of concentrations and to evaluate the ability of the sludge to acclimate and become more tolerant to the metal. Six one-liter fill and draw activated sludge units were fed domestic sewage; five of these units also received constant, increasing, and shock doses of nickel while the sixth was maintained as a control. Treatment efficiency was evaluated in terms of the chemical oxygen demand, suspended solids, and nickel content of the effluent. A Warburg respirometer was also employed and was operated …

Evaluation Of Pile Bearing Capacity By Use Of The Wave Equation, Stuart H. Williams Jan 1965

Evaluation Of Pile Bearing Capacity By Use Of The Wave Equation, Stuart H. Williams

Masters Theses

"The wave equation method of evaluating pile bearing capacity is investigated by using data obtained from a comprehensive pile testing program. Modifications which create a more accurate and realistic approach are made to the method proposed by previous investigators. With the use of these modifications, correlation between observed and computed results is more readily obtained. Selected pile formulas in the empirical, static, and dynamic categories are reviewed so that a direct comparison between these and the wave equation method can be made"--Abstract, page ii.

Discharge Characteristics Of Side Weirs, Edgar Snowden Jan 1965

Discharge Characteristics Of Side Weirs, Edgar Snowden

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this study is to investigate the division of flow of water in a flume of rectangular cross-section when the flume is provided with a side weir. An equation has been derived so that the quantity of water flowing over the side weir compared to the quantity of water flowing in the main channel can be predicted. This ratio is acceptable only within the ranges of heads, velocities, and weir lengths imposed by the geometry of the system tested"--Abstract, page ii.

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this study was to conduct a model study of a folded plate roof in order to determine the feasability [sic] of using model studies as a method of design. Dimensional analysis was used to derive prediction equations for determining the stresses in two prototype structures, when the stresses in the model were known. One model and two prototype folded plate roofs were constructed of plexiglas [sic]. SR-4 strain gages were attached to the structures and strain readings taken as a uniform vertical load was applied in increments. From the strains the stresses at various points in the …

Effect Of Calcium Lignosulfonate On Properties Of Concrete At Early Ages, Lawrence Kong-Pu Wang Jan 1965

Effect Of Calcium Lignosulfonate On Properties Of Concrete At Early Ages, Lawrence Kong-Pu Wang

Masters Theses

"The objective of this investigation was to determine the effects of calcium lignosulfonate on the physical properties of concrete. Calcium lignosulfonate used as an admixture was tested for its effect on the tensile and compressive strength of plain concrete cylinders, and for its effect on the flexural strength of plain concrete beams. The effect of the admixture on shrinkage, slump, air content and unit weight was also studied. the test results showed that calcium lignosulfonate reduces the amount of water required to make a workable concrete mix; a more workable mix saves money because it is easier to place, thus …

Effects Of Internal Pressure Upon The Buckling Of Thin Circular Cylindrical Shells Under Axial Compression, Leroy E. Thompson Jan 1965

Effects Of Internal Pressure Upon The Buckling Of Thin Circular Cylindrical Shells Under Axial Compression, Leroy E. Thompson

Masters Theses

"An experimental investigation was made of the effects of internal pressure upon the buckling of thin circular cylindrical shells under axial compression. A comparison was made of the experimental and theoretical results; the latter were derived from the large-deflection theory. Results showed that the internal pressure had an appreciable strengthening effect upon the buckling of the cylindrical shell. The comparison showed that the experimental results were lower than the theoretical results for a given internal pressure. The discrepancy between the results can be expected since there were factors not included in the theory: imperfections, end conditions, lengths, and material irregularities"--Abstract, …

Field Permeability Determination Of Partially Saturated Fine Grained Soil, Edward G. Rapp Jan 1965

Field Permeability Determination Of Partially Saturated Fine Grained Soil, Edward G. Rapp

Masters Theses

"The determination of water permeability through a soil is necessary to estimate seepage losses from small reservoirs. At the present time, the methods available to conduct this determination in partially saturated fine grained soils are expensive and in most cases not commensurate with the cost or importance of the individual structure. This investigation was conducted to evaluate the use of a proposed, potentially inexpensive field procedure in this situation. A modified borehole apparatus was utilized in field tests to determine the permeability of a partially saturated soil deposit in place. Undisturbed samples from the same location were tested in the …

The Influence Of Cation Exchange And Electrolyte Concentrations Upon The Atterberg Limits, Kent J. Schwieger

Masters Theses

"The object of this investigation is to correlate relationships between cation exchange capacity, clay content, and type and concentration of the exchangeable cations upon the Atterberg limits of a soil. Synthetic soils consisting of loessial silt and either an illitic natural deposit, bentonite, ball clay, or kaolin clay were used.

As the percent clay fraction was increased the cation exchange capacity, liquid and plastic limits and plasticity index increased linearly in the clay range. Results also suggested a linear relationship between the liquid and plastic limits and the cation exchange capacity of soils of one hundred percent clay fraction"--Abstract, page …

An Investigation Of Continuous Prestressed Concrete Structures, Ping-Chi Mao Jan 1965

An Investigation Of Continuous Prestressed Concrete Structures, Ping-Chi Mao

Masters Theses

"This thesis presents an analysis of the behavior of continuous prestressed concrete structures. From this analysis the governing equations for various types of geometry for prestressing cables are derived. The calculation of fixed-end moments due to the prestressing force using the equations derived is quite cumbersome, however, in order to simplify the calculations, design charts are developed. A cable with reverse curvature is analyzed using the design charts. It is shown that the fixed-end moments calculated by neglecting the effect of reverse curvature differ significantly from the fixed-end moments calculated by considering this effect. Hence the effect of reverse curvature …

The Effect Of Submerged Jets On The Hydraulic Jump, Harvey E. Jobson Jan 1965

The Effect Of Submerged Jets On The Hydraulic Jump, Harvey E. Jobson

Masters Theses

"Tests were performed in order to determine the effects of forcing submerged jets of water into the base of a hydraulic jump. The specific energy of the water leaving the hydraulic jump, the length and the wave formation properties of the jump which had been modified by the introduction of submerged jets were determined and compared with the same characteristics of a normal hydraulic jump and a hydraulic jump which had been modified by the use of baffle piers.

Test results indicate: (a) the quantity of water flowing through the submerged jets is a primary factor in determining the specific …

The Transmission Of Loads To Point Bearing Piles In Sand Beneath Retaining Walls, Alan Albert Kamp Jan 1965

The Transmission Of Loads To Point Bearing Piles In Sand Beneath Retaining Walls, Alan Albert Kamp

Masters Theses

"An experimental investigation was made of the way in which loads were transmitted to point bearing H-piles in sand under a retaining wall. Using a plastic model, the moments and axial loads were determined along the length of the pile by measuring the strains with electric strain gages. A comparison was made of the experimental results at the top of the pile and the analytical results at this point; the latter obtained from the common practice used in design. The comparison was very poor because the excessive horizontal load (that part of the horizontal load which could not be carried …
