Appraising Critical Infrastructure Systems With Visualisation, Graeme Pye, Matthew Warren Dec 2009

Appraising Critical Infrastructure Systems With Visualisation, Graeme Pye, Matthew Warren

Australian Information Warfare and Security Conference

This paper explores the use of system modelling as an approach for appraising critical infrastructure systems. It reports on focus group findings with relation to the system modelling aspects of a critical infrastructure security analysis and modelling framework. Specifically, this discussion focuses on the interpretations of a focus group in terms of the likely benefits or otherwise of system visualisation. With the group focusing on its perceived value as an educational tool in terms of providing an abstract visualisation representation of a critical infrastructure system incident.

Generalised Design Process For Fiber-Bend-Loss-Based Edge Filters For A Wavelength Measurement System, Pengfei Wang, Gerald Farrell, Yuliya Semenova Jan 2009

Generalised Design Process For Fiber-Bend-Loss-Based Edge Filters For A Wavelength Measurement System, Pengfei Wang, Gerald Farrell, Yuliya Semenova

Articles

We investigate and present a generalized methodology for the design of a fiber-bend-loss-based edge filter, starting with the task of evaluating and selecting suitable fibers and then considering the design of a fiber-bending-loss edge filter. As an example to illustrate the methodology, a Corning SMF28e fiber with a 900 μmdiameter is selected and two sample edge filters are designed for experimental verification. The designed edge filters are compact, easy to fabricate, meet target spectral specifications, and show low polarization-dependent loss, confirming the effectiveness of the proposed methodology for fiber-bend-loss-based edge filter design.

Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage Systems For Power System Applications, Danny Soetanto, K.W.E Cheng Jan 2009

Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage Systems For Power System Applications, Danny Soetanto, K.W.E Cheng

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

Advancement in both superconducting technologies and power electronics led to High Temperature Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage Systems (SMES) having some excellent performances for use in power systems, such as rapid response (millisecond), high power (multi-MW), high efficiency, and four- quadrant control. This paper provides a review on SMES applications to power systems.

Ride Performance Analysis Of Half-Car Model For Semi-Active System Using Rms As Performance Criteria, Sany Ihsan, Mehdi Ahmadian, Waleed Faris, Emmanuel D. Blanchard Jan 2009

Ride Performance Analysis Of Half-Car Model For Semi-Active System Using Rms As Performance Criteria, Sany Ihsan, Mehdi Ahmadian, Waleed Faris, Emmanuel D. Blanchard

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

The work aims to study the root mean square (RMS) responses to acceleration input for four state variables: the mS vertical acceleration, the mS pitch angular acceleration and the front and rear deflections of the suspensions. A half-car two degree-of-freedom model of semi-active control scheme is analyzed and compared with the conventional passive suspension system. Frequency response of the transfer function for the heave, pitch of the sprung mass and suspension deflections are initially compared and then mean square analysis is utilized to see the effect of semi-active scheme. Results indicate that significant improvements were achieved in the …

A novel detector module configuration based on silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) detectors with LYSO scintillators, a multichannel mixed analog/digital ASIC and an FPGA-based digital data acquisition system has been developed for preclinical positron emission tomography (PET). The SCEPTER ASIC, originally developed for soft X-ray detection at Brookhaven National Laboratory, has a unique architecture incorporating multiple peak detectors and time-to-amplitude converters, and offers an extremely low dead time, making it ideal for coincidence detection. A representative pair of channels in the prototype system has been characterised. Measured energy and timing resolutions are reported for coincidences between a singlepixel SiPM detector and a …

A Bio-Inspired Robotic Locomotion System Based On Conducting Polymer Actuators, Gursel Alici, Daniel Gunderson Jan 2009

A Bio-Inspired Robotic Locomotion System Based On Conducting Polymer Actuators, Gursel Alici, Daniel Gunderson

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

This paper presents the conceptual design and testing of a bio-inspired locomotion system activated through ionic-type conducting polymer actuators, which can operate both in dry and wet environments. The locomotion system is proposed for a mini autonomous crawling device for applications typified by pipe inspection, search, inspection and data gathering in confined spaces, which require mini-robotic systems. The locomotion system is based on the cilia, which has a simple planar bending motion. This type of motion can be provided by bending-type polymer actuators (one-end fixed and the other-end free cantilever beam). The actuators mounted on a printed circuit board and …

Simulation Of Water Movement Through Unsaturated Infiltration-Redistribution System, Thidarat Bunsri, Muttucumaru Sivakumar, Dharmappa Hagare Jan 2009

Simulation Of Water Movement Through Unsaturated Infiltration-Redistribution System, Thidarat Bunsri, Muttucumaru Sivakumar, Dharmappa Hagare

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

This paper deals with the movement of water in a natural unsaturated zone, focusing on infiltration-redistribution system. Infiltration refers to the downward movement of water due to the gravitational force and redistribution defines the upward movement of water due to the capillary rise. Under natural conditions, the movement of water through an infiltration-redistribution depended upon the relations among water content, hydraulic conductivity and tension of soil pore. Various combinations of water balance concepts, Richards' equation, soil-physics theory and capillary height concepts were applied to mathematically model the movement of water through infiltration-redistribution system. The accuracy and computational efficiency of the …
