A Dynamic Spectrum Management Algorithm In Vdsl Systems, Sunil Sharma, Om Parkash Sahu Jan 2016

A Dynamic Spectrum Management Algorithm In Vdsl Systems, Sunil Sharma, Om Parkash Sahu

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

A modified iterative water-filling algorithm is proposed in which power from only those subcarriers of the near end user are reduced, which has the worst effect on bit rates of far end users. The power back off from these subcarriers is done by reducing power spectral masks at respective subcarriers. The results after simulating the proposed algorithm give significant performance advantages in terms of data rate over the traditional iterative water-filling algorithm. These results approach the performance of highly complex optimal spectrum management algorithms while maintaining the complexity of the traditional iterative water-filling algorithm.

Intensity Exposure-Based Bi-Histogram Equalization For Image Enhancement, Tang Jing Rui, Nor Ashidi Mat Isa

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, we present a study of the usage of intensity exposure in histogram segmentation and its performance in histogram equalization. Two techniques are proposed: the mean-based bi-histogram equalization plateau limit (mean-BHEPL) or median-based BHEPL (median-BHEPL) and adaptive bi-histogram equalization algorithm (ABHE). Both techniques initially divide the input histogram into two subhistograms through a threshold value computed from the intensity exposure of the image. Histogram clipping for mean-BHEPL and median-BHEPL is then performed on these subhistograms using the mean and median values, respectively. Conventional histogram equalization is also implemented on each clipped subhistogram. The second proposed technique, ABHE, applies …

A Current-Based Simple Analog Mppt Circuit For Pv Systems, Bülent Büyükgüzel, Murat Aksoy

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

A new single pilot-sensor maximum power point tracking (MPPT) system, consisting of a buck type DC/DC converter, was developed. It is controlled by an analog-based unit. The main difference between the proposed MPPT system and other systems is that the short circuit current of the pilot-PV module in our system is used to control the DC/DC converter. The circuit of the proposed system does not utilize an expensive digital signal processor nor a microcontroller; hence, the cost and the complexity of the system are reduced.

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, a novel compact T-shape defected ground structure (DGS) is proposed in order to reduce the mutual coupling between elements in a microstrip antenna array structure. The proposed DGS has considerable advantages compared to an H-shaped DGS. As is known, DGS insertion is a common problem in microstrip antenna array structures. However, the proposed T-shaped structure is more compact so it could be suitable for a compact microstrip array antenna. The T-shaped DGS is about 24% more compact than the H-shaped one. However, the most important novelty of our work is reducing mutual coupling both in the E-plane …

Energy Efficient Multiconstrained Optimization Using Hybrid Aco And Ga In Manet Routing, Nivetha Senthil Kumaran, Asokan Ramasamy

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Nodes in mobile ad hoc networks (MANET) suffer from limited battery power and bandwidth. Particularly for real time multimedia communications through MANET, metrics like residual node energy, bandwidth, and end-to-end delay have major impacts. In MANET, designing a dynamic routing algorithm to satisfy quality of service (QoS) requirements is a challenging task. Additionally, multiconstrained QoS routing aims to optimize multiple QoS metrics while providing required network resources and is an admittedly complex problem. It has been proved to be NP-complete when a combination of additive, concave, and multiplicative metrics are considered. Hence, this problem can be solved using metaheuristic methods …

Electric Arc Furnace Power Quality Improvement By Applying A New Digital And Predicted-Based Tsc Control, Mehdi Torabian Esfahani, Behrooz Vahidi

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Static VAR compensators (SVC) can improve some of the power quality (PQ) indices such as voltage flicker, unbalances, and power factors in power systems if properly controlled. Different nonlinear and time-varying loads generate these parameters. One of the great nonlinear loads is the electric arc furnace (EAF), which causes waveform distortions, voltage unbalances, and fluctuations. In this paper, a new digital and prediction-based control for thyristor switched capacitors (TSCs) was proposed to compensate an actual steel industrial plant. The digital control was based on generating adequate synchronous pulses, calculating required suitable susceptance, and measuring correct reactive power. The proposed TSC …

The Phononic Crystal Interface Layer Determines Slow-Wave And Pulse Broadening Effects, Li Sun, Aiming Ji, Jialing Hu, Canyan Zhu, Lijun Zhang, Jianfeng Yang, Lingfeng Mao

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The relationship among the slow-wave and echo pulse broadening effects in reflected acoustic waves and the width of the interface layer of phononic crystal has been theoretically investigated. It has been observed that not only the slow time for the reflected acoustic wave but also the echo pulse broadening reaches a saturation point as the size of the phononic crystal increases. From the viewpoint of the acoustic wave, there is an interface layer in the crystal that determines the slow-wave and the echo pulse broadening effects. The longest slow time, which is the time needed for transmitting 0.08 periods of …

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Dynamic economic dispatch (DED) is an important problem in power system generation, operation, planning, and control. The objective of the DED problem is to schedule power generation for the online units over a time horizon, satisfying the unit and ramp rate constraints. Here, valve point loading effects that cause nonsmoothness of the objective function is also considered while solving the DED. The accuracy of the solution not only depends on the optimal scheduling of generating units, but it also lies in accuracy while estimating transmission system losses. Generally, B-loss coefficients are used in estimating transmission losses. However, in the literature, …

Modeling And Simulation Of Sensorless Control Of Four-Leg Inverter Pmsm Drives In The Case Of A Single-Phase Open Circuit Fault, Kamel Saleh, Mark Sumner

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper introduces a new method to track the saliency of a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) motor fed by a 4-leg inverter in the case of a single-phase open circuit fault through measuring the dynamic current response of the motor line currents due to the insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) switching actions. In the case of a single-phase open circuit fault, a fault-tolerant control strategy that includes taking appropriate actions to control the 2 remaining healthy currents results in minor system performance degradation. The new strategy introduced in this paper includes software modifications only to the saliency tracking algorithm used …

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In every power system there are consumer areas away from traditional power networks. Existing grid expansion can always be treated as one of the ways of powering them over long transmission and distribution lines. This is often characterized by significant transmission losses, as well as significant investments, depending on the distance and the infrastructure development. On the other hand, there are cases when these consumers are not connected to the power system and use alternative methods of supply. For that matter, possible solutions may use locally available energy sources. In this paper, comparative analyses between independent power supply through particular …

A Hybrid Search Method Of Wrapper Feature Selection By Chaos Particle Swarm Optimization And Local Search, Mohammad Masoud Javidi, Nasibeh Emami

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Finding a subset of features from a large dataset is a problem that arises in many fields of study. Since the increasing number of features has extended the computational cost of a system, it is necessary to design and implement a system with the least number of features. The purpose of feature selection is to find the best subset of features from the original ones. The result of the best selection is improving the computational cost and the accuracy of the prediction. A large number of algorithms have been proposed for feature subset selection. In this paper, we propose a …

A Ring Crossover Genetic Algorithm For The Unit Commitment Problem, Syed Basit Ali Bukhari, Aftab Ahmad, Syed Auon Raza, Muhammad Noman Siddique

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The unit commitment problem (UCP) is a nonlinear, mixed-integer, constraint optimization problem and is considered a complex problem in electrical power systems. It is the combination of two interlinked subproblems, namely the generator scheduling problem and the generation allocation problem. In large systems, the UCP turns out to be increasingly complicated due to the large number of possible ON and OFF combinations of units in the power system over a scheduling time horizon. Due to the insufficiency of conventional approaches in handling large systems, numerous metaheuristic techniques are being developed for solving this problem. The genetic algorithm (GA) is one …

A Multiobjective Tuning Approach Of Power System Stabilizers Using Particle Swarm Optimization, Hilal Labdelaoui, Fares Boudjema, Djamel Boukhetala

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This work presents an optimal tuning approach of power system stabilizers (PSSs) using multiobjective particle swarm optimization. Two types of PSSs are investigated, the conventional speed-based PSS type and a dual-input PSS type that uses the accelerating power as an additional input. The tuning problem of these PSSs is formulated as a minimization problem of a vector objective function characterizing the damping and the transient performance of the closed-loop system. A 3-machine 9-bus power system example is considered, and the speed-constrained multiobjective particle swarm optimization algorithm is used to solve the optimization problem. The results show that trade-offs exist between …

An Hf/Uhf Dual Mode Rfid Transponder Antenna And Hf Range Extension Using Uhf Wireless Power Transmission, Mustafa Murat Bi̇lgi̇ç, Korkut Yeği̇n

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

An HF/UHF compatible RFID transponder antenna is designed, simulated, and measured for dual band operation and HF range extension. A dual mode compatible RFID transponder antenna has the benefits of each mode and eliminates the disadvantages of single mode operation. One of the major drawbacks of UHF antennas is their poor performance when the tag is placed on or near metallic objects. To overcome this shortcoming, two-layer substrate with degenerate grounded is used and a 4-turn spiral antenna is placed on the top and bottom parts of the substrate for HF operation. The co-existence of both antennas affects standalone performances …

Feature extraction is one of the most crucial stages in the field of brain computer interface (BCI). Because of its ability to directly influence the performance of BCI systems, recent studies have generally investigated how to modify existing methods or develop novel techniques. One of the most successful and well-known methods in BCI applications is the common spatial pattern (CSP). In existing CSP-based methods, the spatial filters were extracted either by using the whole data trial or by dividing the trials into a number of overlapping/nonoverlapping time segments. In this paper, we developed a CSP-based moving window technique to obtain …

Time Series Adapted Supervised Fuzzy Discretization: An Application To Ecg Signals, Umut Orhan Jan 2016

Time Series Adapted Supervised Fuzzy Discretization: An Application To Ecg Signals, Umut Orhan

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this study, a new method called supervised fuzzy discretization (SFD), which can be used without having expertise on data, is proposed for classifying time series datasets. Because an ECG signal has a partially stationary characteristic, its classification process is more difficult than it would be for completely stationary signals. On the other hand, because the method proposed can be used without having expertise on the data, comprehensive data like ECG signals are enough to introduce one such method. To prove the efficacy of the SFD, RR intervals selected from a common ECG database are used in the classification experiments. …

Selective Harmonics Elimination Pwm With Self-Balancing Dc-Link In Photovoltaic 7-Level Inverter, Khoukha Imarazene, Hachemi Chekireb, El Madjid Berkouk

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, a new DC-link balancing method for a 7-level inverter fed by a photovoltaic system is proposed. The proposed redundant state technique is associated with selective harmonics elimination (SHE)-PWM instead of space vector (SV)-PWM. The switching angles related to the SHE are computed via the resultant theory method. Moreover, the study of this inverter is carried out on its equivalent matrix model. On the basis of this model, the link between the capacitor voltage, switching states, and load current is established. This allows understanding the switching redundancies' effect on the DC capacitor voltage balance. An algorithm is then …
