July 26, 2016 – Civil & Environmental Engineering PhD student Caleb Buahin has won a major award at the 8th International Congress on Environmental Modeling & Software. He received one of the best student paper awards at the event held in Toulouse, France July 10-14.

April 13, 2016 Ayman Alfifi won first place in the American Water Resources Association Utah Chapter student paper competition. His paper is titled "Systems Modeling to Improve River and Riparian Habitat Quality." The presentation occurred at the Utah Division of Water Resources offices in Salt Lake City, Utah. Ayman Alfifi is a CEE and Water Lab Phd student.

A student from last year’s REU project, Bethany Fronhofer, attended the 2016 Emerging Researchers National (ERN) Conference. Where she spoke about the work that she did along with Sarah Schott in Dr. Idalis Villanueva’s lab. Bethany’s presentation won first place for the Science and Mathematics Education/Social and Behavioral Sciences Undergraduate Oral Presentation category.

Jorge Espinoza, an undergraduate research assistant working with Dr. Idalis Villanueva in Engineering Education has been awarded a College of Engineering Undergraduate Research Program (EURP) award for the 2016-2017 academic year to conduct research in developing MATLAB codes to real-time biometric data used in the classroom. Biometrics involves the analysis of metrics reflective of human characteristics. An example of a metric can be physiological markers such as skin temperature and electrodermal activity or biological markers such as hormonal levels.

Lifu Xiao received a B.S. degree in Chemistry from Fudan University in China, 2011. He has been pursuing a Ph.D. degree in Biological Engineering since 2011 at Utah State University under the supervision of Dr. Anhong Zhou. He obtained a multidisciplinary background in chemistry, biology and engineering working in Dr. Zhou’s lab. His research focuses on developing new methods for sensing and imaging of human disease-related biomolecules and mammalian cells.

UPEL AMPED team published a paper, titled ‘Active balancing system for electric vehicles with incorporated low voltage bus’, at APEC, the annual conference for Applied Power Electronics and Exposition. AMPED team comprises graduate students Muhammad Muneeb, Kelly Hathaway, Post-doc researcher Michael Evzelman, and Prof. Regan Zane. The work highlights research in control of power converters associated with the battery management system (BMS) in order to improve battery pack lifetime and reduce cost and weight.
