Structural Analysis And Optimization Of Skyscrapers Connected With Skybridges And Atria, Amy Jean Taylor Mccall Dec 2013

Structural Analysis And Optimization Of Skyscrapers Connected With Skybridges And Atria, Amy Jean Taylor Mccall

Theses and Dissertations

Skybridges and atria between buildings are becoming more and more popular. Most current skybridge connections are either roller or rigid-connections. This dissertation presents an investigation of the structural analysis and optimization of skyscraper systems with hinge-connected skybridges, and compares the results to skyscraper systems with roller-connected skybridges and to skyscraper systems without skybridges altogether. Also presented is an investigation of the structural analysis and optimization of skyscrapers both with and without atria between the buildings. It was assumed that the atria envelope was constructed with cushions made from lightweight, transparent, and flexible Ethylene Tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE). A simplified skyscraper skybridge model …

Techniques For Optimum Design Of Actively Controlled Structures Including Topological Considerations, Arjumand Ali Dec 2013

Techniques For Optimum Design Of Actively Controlled Structures Including Topological Considerations, Arjumand Ali

Theses and Dissertations

The design and performance of complex engineering systems often depends on several conflicting objectives which, in many cases, cannot be represented as a single measure of performance. This thesis presents a multi-objective formulation for a comprehensive treatment of the structural and topological considerations in the design of actively controlled structures.

The dissertation addresses three main problems. The first problem deals with optimum placement of actuators in actively controlled structures. The purpose of control is to reduce the vibrations when the structure is subjected to a disturbance. In order to mitigate the structural vibrations as quickly as possible, it is necessary …

Bi- And Multi Level Game Theoretic Approaches In Mechanical Design, Ehsan Ghotbi Aug 2013

Bi- And Multi Level Game Theoretic Approaches In Mechanical Design, Ehsan Ghotbi

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation presents a game theoretic approach to solve bi and multi-level optimization problems arising in mechanical design. Toward this end, Stackelberg (leader-follower), Nash, as well as cooperative game formulations are considered. To solve these problems numerically, a sensitivity based approach is developed in this dissertation. Although game theoretic methods have been used by several authors for solving multi-objective problems, numerical methods and the applications of extensive games to engineering design problems are very limited. This dissertation tries to fill this gap by developing the possible scenarios for multi-objective problems and develops new numerical approaches for solving them.

Accuracy Of A Simplified Analysis Model For Modern Skyscrapers, Jacob Scott Lee Jun 2013

Accuracy Of A Simplified Analysis Model For Modern Skyscrapers, Jacob Scott Lee

Theses and Dissertations

A new simplified skyscraper analysis model (SSAM) was developed and implemented in a spreadsheet to be used for preliminary skyscraper design and teaching purposes. The SSAM predicts linear and nonlinear response to gravity, wind, and seismic loading of "modern" skyscrapers which involve a core, megacolumns, outrigger trusses, belt trusses, and diagonals. The SSAM may be classified as a discrete method that constructs a reduced system stiffness matrix involving selected degrees of freedom (DOF's). The steps in the SSAM consist of: 1) determination of megacolumn areas, 2) construction of stiffness matrix, 3) calculation of lateral forces and displacements, and 4) calculation …

Coordinated Control Of Power Electronic Converters In An Autonomous Microgrid, Gholamreza Dehnavi Jan 2013

Coordinated Control Of Power Electronic Converters In An Autonomous Microgrid, Gholamreza Dehnavi

Theses and Dissertations

Advances in power electronics and generation technologies have increased the viability of distributed generation systems. A microgrid is a special category of distributed generation systems that is distinguished by its size and the ability to operate independently as an islanded system. As long as a microgrid is connected to a large grid, quality of the voltage is supported by the main grid and each power source connected to the microgrid generates independently. In contrast, in the islanded operation of microgrids and in electrical islands such as shipboard distribution systems, dynamics are strongly dependent on the connected sources and on the …
