Manipulation Of Light In Plasmonic Nano-Structures, Rehab Kotb Abd-Allah Oct 2014

Manipulation Of Light In Plasmonic Nano-Structures, Rehab Kotb Abd-Allah

Theses and Dissertations

Manipulating light at nano-scale is usually shadowed by the diffraction limit. Recently, plasmonics have emerged as a new technology that enables confining light at nano-scale. Using plasmonic structures, photonic devices can be shrunk from the micro-scale to the nano-scale. In this thesis, a novel structure to a plasmonic nano-filter is introduced and analyzed. The proposed nano-resonator has low loss, compact size and good sensing characteristics. A closed form model to the filter behavior is developed. The model is extracted from the waveguide physical parameters and provides a physical insight into the structure of the filter. An analytical model to the …

Oxygen Flux And Dielectric Response Study Of Mixed Ionic-Electronic Conducting (Miec) Heterogeneous Functional Materials, Fazle Rabbi Aug 2014

Oxygen Flux And Dielectric Response Study Of Mixed Ionic-Electronic Conducting (Miec) Heterogeneous Functional Materials, Fazle Rabbi

Theses and Dissertations

Dense mixed ionic-electronic conducting (MIEC) membranes consisting of ionic conductive perovskite-type and/or fluorite-type oxides and high electronic conductive spinel type oxides, at elevated temperature can play a useful role in a number of energy conversion related systems including the solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC), oxygen separation and permeation membranes, partial oxidization membrane reactors for natural gas processing, high temperature electrolysis cells, and others. This study will investigate the impact of different heterogeneous characteristics of dual phase ionic and electronic conductive oxygen separation membranes on their transport mechanisms, in an attempt to develop a foundation for the rational design of such …

Measurement And Modeling Of Fire Behavior In Leaves And Sparse Shrubs, Dallan R. Prince Jul 2014

Measurement And Modeling Of Fire Behavior In Leaves And Sparse Shrubs, Dallan R. Prince

Theses and Dissertations

Wildland fuels and fire behavior have been the focus of numerous studies and models which provide operational support to firefighters. However, fuel and fire complexity in live shrubs has resulted in unexpected and sometimes aggressive fire behavior. The combustion of live fuels was studied and modeled, and the results were assimilated into a shrub-scale fire behavior model which assumes fire spread by flame-fuel overlap. Fire spread models have usually assumed that radiation heat transfer is responsible for driving fire spread, but that assumption is a topic of continuing debate, and appears to contradict some experimental observations. A convection-based shrub-scale fire …
