Semi-Automated Approach To Shape Optimal Design Of Planar Structures, Gurinder Pal Singh Jan 1994

Semi-Automated Approach To Shape Optimal Design Of Planar Structures, Gurinder Pal Singh

Theses

This paper presents a general algorithm, using IDEAS programmability features to integrate different phases of shape optimization process. The present work is mainly concentrated on planar structures, defined by thin or shell finite elements. Interactive programs are generated to convert input data to geometric models, to define mesh areas, to generate finite element mesh and to execute adaptive mesh refinement techniques. The importance of automated mesh generation and refinement is highlighted and various optimization methods are considered. Further, a special attention is given to integration issues of shape optimization capabilities into CAD environment. To demonstrate the developed algorithm, an automotive …

A Review Of Energy Storing Prosthetic Feet And Computer Aided Structural Optimization Of A Below-Knee Prosthesis, Poonam Gope Lalwani Jan 1993

A Review Of Energy Storing Prosthetic Feet And Computer Aided Structural Optimization Of A Below-Knee Prosthesis, Poonam Gope Lalwani

Theses

Because people with physical disabilities have shown an interest in participation in sports, a new class of prosthetic feet known as "energy storing prosthetic feet" has been developed. These new developments in prosthetic foot design utilize energy storage and return to improve ambulation. This thesis reviews the design, materials, advantages and disadvantages of various energy storing prosthetic feet. Research studies, comparing gait in below-knee amputees using different prosthetic designs, can be applied to the design of prosthetic feet that are lighter, stronger and more reliable. Comparisions among these feet are reviewed in the context of functional capability and patient satisfaction. …

Computer Aided Shape Optimization Using Finite Element Analysis, Charanpreet Singh Bagga Jan 1992

Computer Aided Shape Optimization Using Finite Element Analysis, Charanpreet Singh Bagga

Theses

Various theories behind Computer Aided Shape Optimization are studied. A special attention is paid to the shape representation, mesh generation and refinement during the shape optimization process. Shape optimization process for a wall bracket is performed using the Computer Aided Engineering package of I-DEAS. Finite element analysis of the wall bracket is done and the stress distribution over the bracket is studied. The bracket is trimmed in the selected low stress regions using shape optimization capability of I-DEAS and an optimized shape of the wall bracket is obtained. The end product is evaluated using Supertab module of I-DEAS as well …

Representing Tolerances In A Geometric Modeller, Chih-Tsung Huang May 1991

Representing Tolerances In A Geometric Modeller, Chih-Tsung Huang

Theses

Current geometric modeller contains dimension information only. This thesis describes how tolerance can be added to a geometric modeller. The modeller is based on a hybrid design of the Constructive Solid Geometry (CSG) scheme and Boundary Representation (B-Rep). Various tolerances based on the ANSI standard are considered.
