Investigation Into Oxygen Diffusion As It Relates To Alpha Case Formation In Ti-6al-4v Based On Different Forging Thermal Cycles, Tyler J. Meador, Jon Leduc, Francesca Hope

Materials Engineering

An investigation into the growth kinetics of alpha case in Ti-6Al-4V in the presence of oxygen was conducted for different forging thermal cycles. This was done to determine whether the alpha case should be removed after each thermal cycle or as the final step after forging. The thermal cycles consisted of four hours at 1750 °F. Samples were subjected to this treatment one, two, three, and four times along with a continuous sixteen hour hold. Four cycle and Hold samples were subjected to an additional thermal cycle above the beta transus at 1925 °F. These then went through a final …

Microstructure And Tensile Properties Of Close-Die Forged Ti-6al-4v Aircraft Engine Mount, Renee Roeder, Nick Chen, Michael Viksne Jun 2020

Microstructure And Tensile Properties Of Close-Die Forged Ti-6al-4v Aircraft Engine Mount, Renee Roeder, Nick Chen, Michael Viksne

Materials Engineering

The microstructural characteristics of a Ti-6Al-4V close-die forging that passes yield strength specifications are examined and found to be consistent with literature recommendations. Originally, the intent was to compare the microstructure of a forging that passed specification to the microstructure of a forging that did not pass specifications using the imaging software ImageJ. Due to time and safety constraints considering the COVID-19 pandemic, the data that is presented is incomplete data on only the forging that passes specifications. There are no comparisons between the forging that did not pass and the forging that passed.

Effects Of Initial Forging Temperature, Cooling Rates, And Carbon Content On Primary Alpha Formation In Ti-6al-4v, James Tillman, Hui Wei Jun 2015

Effects Of Initial Forging Temperature, Cooling Rates, And Carbon Content On Primary Alpha Formation In Ti-6al-4v, James Tillman, Hui Wei

Materials Engineering

Ti-6Al-4V is an alpha-beta titanium alloy system, which contains both alpha and beta phases at room temperature. Both alpha and beta phases provide Ti-6Al-4V a range of different properties for a range of applications. In order to improve the energy efficiency and better satisfy customers’ requirements of less than 52% primary alpha phase, Weber Metals sponsored this project to study the effects of carbon content, forging temperature, and cooling rates on primary alpha formation in Ti-6Al-4V alloys. There has been a lot of discussion as to whether or not carbon, a known alpha stabilizer, will affect the microstructure in small …

Electrochemical Testing Of Aluminum-Lithium Alloys 2050, 2195, And The Current Aerospace Industry Standard 7075 To Measure The Galvanic Corrosion Behavior With Ti-6al-4v, Trent Duncan, Kevin Knight Jun 2015

Electrochemical Testing Of Aluminum-Lithium Alloys 2050, 2195, And The Current Aerospace Industry Standard 7075 To Measure The Galvanic Corrosion Behavior With Ti-6al-4v, Trent Duncan, Kevin Knight

Materials Engineering

This project aimed to characterize the electrochemical behavior of four different aluminum alloys, and determine how much galvanic corrosion would occur when each alloy was coupled to Ti-6Al-4V. The particular alloys tested were 2050-T3, 2050-T852, 2195-T852, and 7075-T7352. These alloys were tested to determine the effects of aging, and adding lithium, to the corrosion behavior of aluminum alloys. Potentiodynamic polarization curves were generated using the Parstat 2273 potentiostat in accordance with ASTM standard G5, and corrosion analysis software was used to produce Tafel fit lines, which determined the open circuit potential (Ecorr) of each sample. Nine tests were …

Characterization Of Laser Deposited Ti-6al-4v To Nb Gradient Alloys, Clincy Cheung Jun 2015

Characterization Of Laser Deposited Ti-6al-4v To Nb Gradient Alloys, Clincy Cheung

Materials Engineering

An alloy was fabricated with Ti-6Al-4V and Nb powder using laser deposition (LD) to form a compositional gradient. The gradient was deposited, starting with Ti-6Al-4V powder, onto a forged Ti-6Al-4V substrate in an Argon environment. Niobium (Nb) composition increased by 4-at.% with each layer deposited until the composition reached 100-at.% Nb. This process yielded steep thermal gradients and affected the microstructure and mechanical properties across the compositional gradient. To observe the microstructural changes in the alloy, an etched gradient was viewed with optical microscopy at 1000x, where the grain structure was observed to be an acicular α phase at 100-at.% …

Effect Of Carbon On Primary Alpha Percentage In Ti-6al-4v As Temperature Approaches The Beta Transus, Kyle Savage Jun 2013

Effect Of Carbon On Primary Alpha Percentage In Ti-6al-4v As Temperature Approaches The Beta Transus, Kyle Savage

Materials Engineering

Some Ti-6Al-4V forgings require a specific amount of α phase known as primary α in the finished product. The percentage of primary α is dependent on how close to the beta transus temperature forging is conducted. The beta transus temperature is affected by certain alloying elements. Carbon is one of the elements known to increase the beta transus temperature. Since each Ti-6Al-4V ingot contains varying amounts of carbon, testing on a variety of chemistries needs to be conducted. Cubes approximately 0.5 inches from low, medium, and high carbon chemistries were heat treated at temperatures below the beta transus in 18 …

Microstructural Characterization Of Ti-6al-4v And Its Relationship To Sample Geometry, Blake Gaspar Jun 2012

Microstructural Characterization Of Ti-6al-4v And Its Relationship To Sample Geometry, Blake Gaspar

Materials Engineering

A problem exists with a part produced by forging made by Shultz Steel of Ti-6Al-4V in the variance of properties throughout the part. There is one specific region that exhibits the most variance. The purpose of the report is to determine any microstructural differences within the region of interest in the part. When microstructures of the inner section and outer section of the part were looked at it was determined that they exhibited a martensitic structure. There was a noticeable difference in the lath structure between sections. The outer region contained larger more widely spread laths of an average length …

Effects Of Annealing/Solution Treating And Aging On Longitudinal And Transverse Properties Of Ti-6al-4v Forgings, Blake Reller Jun 2012

Effects Of Annealing/Solution Treating And Aging On Longitudinal And Transverse Properties Of Ti-6al-4v Forgings, Blake Reller

Materials Engineering

Forty-eight subsize round-bar tensile samples (ASTM E8) were machined from 3-in-thick forgings of Ti-6Al-4V. Half of these samples were cut so the axis aligned with the longitudinal (LG) direction of the forging, the other half were cut to align with the transverse (LT) direction. Four samples from each direction were subjected to one of six heat treatments so that a total of eight samples received each treatment. Annealed samples were held at 1350°F for two hours, then air cooled. Solution treated and aged (STA) samples were solution treated at one of five temperatures between 1785°F and 1435°F for one hour …

Characterization Of The Relationship Between The Microstructure And Tensile Strength Of Annealed Ti-6al-4v, Aldo Corona

Materials Engineering

Tensile coupons of Ti-6Al-4V were heat treated at varying annealing temperatures from 1200°F (648°C) to 1450°F (787°C) at 50°F (23°C) increments for 1 hour. The samples were air cooled to room temperature or furnace cooled to 800°F (426°C) followed by air cooling to room temperature. Four tensile coupons were treated at each annealing temperature and cooling rate. Alpha case was observed to form on the surface of the samples post heat treatment with a maximum depth of 25 µm (.001 in). Samples were tensile tested for their ultimate tensile strength, yield strength, and percent elongation. Samples across all annealing temperatures …
