Water side corrosion within copper plumbing can occur due to a wide variety of unwanted circumstances. Through the controlled immersion of six ¾” copper tubing samples with five utilizing a unique industry standard soldering flux, this investigation associates residual flux deposits with the initiation of pitting in copper. Water stagnation in a copper potable water distribution system, typically associated with an infrequently used faucet, is a condition highly prone to copper pitting. The effect of residual soldering flux on the mechanical properties of 304 stainless-steel core medical guide wires was analyzed. A soldering process joins the metallic components of the distal end of a medical guide wire product. Acidic soldering flux is used to prepare the surfaces of the metallic substrates. Manufacturing protocol utilizes an ultrasonic bath to remove excess flux from the soldered joints. Sample groups underwent different levels of cleaning: no cleaning, partial cleaning, and full ultrasonic bath cleaning to obtain varying residual flux levels. This presentation contains an assessment of the best overall corrosion monitoring device, intrusive or non-intrusive, for use in the petrochemical industry. Corrosion in the petrochemical industry is a large issue because it causes a deterioration of pipe integrity in fuel processing systems. A reduction of pipe wall integrity due to corrosion could result in a leak or an explosion of fuel processing lines since those systems function at high pressures. The use of corrosion monitoring systems in the petrochemical industry helps to detect early signs of corrosion prior to failure so that proper maintenance can be performed to prevent catastrophe. …

To assess corrosion rates of metal alloy bio-absorbable stents an experimental set-up was designed to mimic the coronary artery environment. The artery was modeled using 4mm diameter Tecoflex tubing and the metal alloy stents were inserted into the tubing using a catheter. As is the case in cardiac surgery, the catheter with the stent and a microballoon were maneuvered to the desired position. The microballoon was then slowly inflated to expand the stent and compress it against the tubing walls. The catheter and microballoon were then withdrawn. In an effort to maximize grain growth of open-die forged 6061 aluminum alloy parts, samples from three of Weber Metals’s suppliers (Hidal Co-Almex USA Inc., TST Inc., and Vista Metals Corp.; to be called Supplier H, Supplier T, Supplier V respectively) were cut into cylinders with diameters of 0.75˝ and heights of 2˝, and put through a simulated forging process and heat treatment. It is possible that additional alloying elements may be promoting or inhibiting grain growth in the final part. This project investigates the performance benefits of polysiloxane and polyurethane coating systems for corrosion protection in marine environments. PPG Industries Amercoat 450H and International Paint Interthane 990HS were the polyurethane topcoats tested. PPG Industries Ameron PSX 700 (New Blend) and International Paint Interfine 878 were the polysiloxane topcoats tested. Each coating was sprayed onto carbon steel panels that were prepared through hand blasting with glass beads. Scribed and unscribed panels were tested in a salt fog chamber for 1,200 hours according to ASTM Standard B0117-11 and in a UV/Humidifier for 1,650 hours according to ASTM Standard D4587-11. AZ31B was heat treated to evoke more controlled and uniform corrosion. 1/16” diameter AZ31B wire was cut into six samples each 1” long. The samples underwent heat treatments following ASTM B661-06. Samples were weighed and placed into three different in vitro environments. In the first scenario two samples of each heat treatment were individually placed in 50 ml of saline solution at 0.9% sodium, in a static test tube at 37°C temperature. This study evaluates the potential effects of silver salts on biocompatible metals used for prostheses during the chemical reduction process to produce a silver antimicrobial layer on the metal’s surface. Samples of two biocompatible metals were obtained: Stainless Steel 316L and ASTM F75 Cobalt Chromium Alloy. Three different silver salts were also acquired: silver nitrate, silver sulfadiazine, and silver chloride. Six steel samples each were twin wire arc sprayed with Hastelloy C-276 or Nickel-Shield 200 coatings approximately 0.020″ thick. These samples were then cut into 3″ by 3″ squares. Samples of two Thermal Spray Coating (TSC) alloys on a low carbon steel substrate were obtained: alloy C276 and Nicko-Shield 200. Specimens of each alloy were subjected to heat treatments at temperatures at 1100° for 60 minutes and 1200° for 10 minutes, with some specimens left in the as-sprayed condition. Three replicates were prepared for each condition. Thin 1” strips were cut using a diamond wafering blade for porosity measurements and 2” x 1” specimens were cut for corrosion testing using a SiC abrasive saw.
