"The purpose of this study was to develop a method for weight minimization of the plastically designed frame, braced normal to its plane of action, and composed of prismatic steel members. The method accounts for the non-linear relationship between weight and moment capacity for both beams and columns. Reduction in the pure-bending fully-plastic moment in the presence of axial loading and both beam-column instability and overall frame instability due to sidesway are taken into account. Provision is made for minimization of frames employing standard sections as well as for frames whose built-up members may be chosen from a continuous spectrum. …

"The purpose of this investigation was to obtain a correlation for drag reducing solutions in circular tubes under turbulent conditions. Data were taken for three polymer-solvent systems: polymethyl methacrylate V-100 (Mv ~ 110,000) in toluene, polyisobutylene L-200 (Mv ~ 4,700,000) in toluene, and polyisobutylene L-200 in cyclohexane. The data from the two polyisobutylene systems, together with other data on polymethyl methacrylate G (Mv ~ 1,500,000) in toluene and polyisobutylene L-80 (Mv ~ 860,000) in cyclohexane, were used to attempt to obtain the correlation. The V-100 solutions were not used because they were not drag reducing.

"This thesis reports the procedure and results obtained from the stabilization of a clean poorly graded sand with various amounts of epoxy resin. The same soil was also stabilized with varying amounts of Portland cement in order to have a basis for comparison of the results obtained. "The purpose of this investigation was to determine how the soil shear graph could be modified to measure more accurately values of shear strength of fine-grained, cohesive soils. Several modifications were tried, however, the one that gave the most satisfactory results consisted of a vane and base plate mechanism.
A red clay of high plasticity obtained from a local cave was tested in both the natural or undisturbed state and in the remolded state. The only variable was the moisture content. "Using the known moments obtained from the moment distribution solution, the extended moment-area equations are used to check whether or not delta x, delta y, delta theta are truly zero, or are any other quantity they are supposed to be. In order to get a reasonably correct answer, a solution must meet both the elastic checks and the static checks for their equilibrium and compatibility functions. Using the extended moment-area equations, the magnitudes of the slopes and deflections at all of the joints in framed structures can be found easily"--Abstract, page ii.

"This paper is a photoelastic investigation of the stresses in a deep beam using partial mirrors to obtain isocromatic fringe sharpening and fringe multiplication. This method may be of particular value in photoelastic work for obtaining full field fringe multiplication and fringe sharpening for models which exhibit low fringe orders.
The photoelastic model used in this investigation is a deep beam with a length to depth ratio of one. A uniform load is applied over the center one-half of the beam. The beam is supported by two uniform loads distributed over a length of one-quarter the span.

"The objective of this investigation is to determine the positioning of vehicle wheels so as to cause maximum positive and negative moments in a two span continuous girder. Several variables are considered, namely, the ratio of loads to each other, the distance between wheels, and ratio of one span length to the other. The necessary equations are derived and the results, after being programmed on a computer, are shown in a series of curves.

"Tests were performed in order to determine the effect of submerged jets injecting water into the base of the hydraulic jump. The jump was studied in terms of the following properties: specific energy of the flow leaving the hydraulic jump, length of the hydraulic jump, tailwater depth, and wave formation properties. These properties for the hydraulic jump with submerged jets were compared to the natural hydraulic jump.
Results of the tests indicate that: submerged jets at any angle tested tend to decrease the specific energy of the water leaving the jump and are more effective than the impulse-momentum principle indicates, …

"The intermediate phases in the holmium-iron system were investigated by means of X-ray diffraction and metallographic examination. The intermediate phases identified by X-ray diffraction data were HoFe₂ , HoFe₃ , HoFe₅, and Ho₂Fe₁₇.
A new intermediate phase, HoFe₃, was found. HoFe₃ was indexed as hexagonal with lattice parameters of a = 5.084 Å and c = 24.45 Å, and was thought to be of the space group R3̄̄m.
HoFe₂ was formed by a peritectic reaction and its solidus was estimated to be between 1325°C and 1340°C. suggested to be a congruent melting intermetallic compound with a melting point below 1340°C. …

"The effect of moisture on the strength characteristics of rock materials has been neglected in the study of rock mechanics. This study was undertaken to determine if there was any effect on the compressive and the tensile strength of rock by varying the moisture content from an oven-dried to a saturated condition.
It was found, by testing eight different rock materials that the compressive strength per unit area decreased with an increasing moisture content. "The purpose of this investigation was to determine the mechanism of the anodic oxidation of maleic acid on platinized-platinum electrodes at 80⁰C. Current density-potential studies were conducted varying the parameters of maleic acid concentration and pH. The faradaic efficiency of the oxidation of maleic acid to yield CO₂ was determined. The effect of temperature on current density was also studied to determine the activation energy for the reaction. The oxidation of maleic acid occurred only in acidic solutions. The faradaic efficiency was found to be approximately 97 ± 5 per cent. A linear Tafel region was found which had a …

"A study was conducted to determine the velocity and temperature distributions in swirling flow of air through a converging nozzle. Radial traverses were taken at three axial positions with a specially designed pitot tube constructed of hypodermic needles. The most significant finding was the large magnitude of the radial velocity component. A combination of reversed axial flow along the nozzle axis, and an outward flow near the nozzle surface was also experienced. An increase of temperature with increasing radial position may be attributed to the Ranque-Hilsch effect"--Abstract, page ii.

"This investigation has taken different orifice sizes (0.3005", 0.4000", 0.5045", 0.6015") and tested their flow characteristics when used in a 1" diameter pipe. Each orifice was initially placed in a fully eccentric position, that is the circumference of the orifice was placed tangent to the inside circumference of the pipe. Data was taken with the orifice eccentric to concentric in increments of 0.050".
Plots of flow coefficient versus Reynold's number were made for each position of the four orifices tested.
Empirical equations were developed for determining the flow coefficient of the various orifice sizes placed in any eccentric position.

The effect of initial moisture content on the swelling properties of untreated Putnam silt loam was investigated by performing free swell and swell pressure tests on specimens with varying initial moisture contents compacted to a constant dry density. The free swell tests were conducted by allowing the samples to swell freely under a low load (the weight of the plunger and the porous stone in the swelling apparatus) and measuring the volume change that resulted. This control system utilizes a control tube containing a neutron-absorbing fluid. The level of the fluid inside of the tube is then regulated by means of' a pressurized gas and offers a number of unique advantages over the conventional control rod system using linear absorber rods.

"The apparent valence of lead was determined in one normal solutions of potassium nitrate, ammonium acetate, lead nitrate, and lead acetate at temperatures of 25 and 50°C. The current density was varied from 0.001 to 1.00 amp•cm -2. The apparent valence of lead ranged between 1.90 and 2.00 in all solutions. The lower valences were reached at higher current densities. The amount of disintegration was very small, and was dependent upon film formation on the surface of the anode.

"Uniaxial compressive strength for two and three-layered specimens was obtained with different thicknesses of layers and also for different length to diameter ratios. The fracture and failure pattern was studied. Shear and extension fractures were observed in the layers. Geometry and end conditions of the specimen had a great influence in the failure and fracture pattern.
The uniaxial compressive strength of a layered specimen was found to be lower than the weighted average strength and either low or high when compared to the arithmetic average strength, depending on the ratio of the heights of the layers. The compressive strength of …

The system is capable of measuring currents in the range from 10-10 amperes to 200 milliamperes. The system includes various pieces of commercially available equipment plus several pieces of specially designed and fabricated equipment.

The restrictions on the given transfer function are that it be a ratio of two polynomials in s, its poles lie on the finite, negative real axis of the s plane, and its numerator polynomial have only real coefficients, with a positive leading coefficient.

"A new method of desalination using a porous, water-repellent membrane was studied. The membrane utilized surface forces to support a vapor phase in its pores which separated the salt water from fresh water. The method used a vapor pressure difference across the membrane as the driving force for mass transfer of water from the salt water phase to the fresh water. This vapor pressure difference was obtained by maintaining a temperature difference between the two liquid phases.

"Head loss due to fluid friction was measured in smooth conduits of rectangular cross section. The data covers the laminar and turbulent range. Results were compared with previous theoretical and empirical data.
The customary practice of calculating head loss in non-circular conduits by use of the friction factor obtained on an “equivalent” circular pipe was discussed. "In problems of engineering design, it is usually assumed that the stress-strain diagrams of a given material, as obtained from different loading conditions, are the same. In fact, by using the classical theory of plasticity, it can be shown that, with an appropriate selection of stress and strain related parameters, the diagrams should coincide.
Three different materials - magnesium, aluminum and steel, have been tested under tension, compression, torsion and bending loads. Stress-strain diagrams were constructed from these observations.
