Power Optimization Of Solar Powered Standalone Wireless Sensor System, Rajan Amatya Dec 2018

Power Optimization Of Solar Powered Standalone Wireless Sensor System, Rajan Amatya

Masters Theses

Wireless sensor systems are common in applications where harsh environmental conditions or remote locations make it difficult to run wires. Having these sensor systems self-powered is essential as it is difficult for battery replacement. Using solar as an alternative source of energy can be a medium to charge the battery in such scenarios. With an increasing number of portable devices powered by battery; more and more research is focused on low-power design technique. For this thesis, a microcontroller (Texas Instruments MSP432) was used along with a digital sensor (Bosch BME280) to provide temperature, pressure and humidity information, and Wi-Fi module …

Integrated Solar Technologies With Outdoor Pedestrian Bridge Superstructure Decking, Richard K. Racz Mar 2016

Integrated Solar Technologies With Outdoor Pedestrian Bridge Superstructure Decking, Richard K. Racz

Masters Theses

Solar technology has been a major topic in sustainable design for many years. In the last five years, however, the solar technology industry has seen a rapid growth in installations and technological advances in cell design. Combined with a rapidly declining overall system cost, the idea of introducing solar technology into a wider range of applications is becoming a focus for engineers and scientists around the world. So many variables which alter solar energy production, such as the sun and surrounding environment, determine whether a solar design is beneficial. This thesis presents a bridge deck surface integrated with solar cells …

A Statistical Analysis Of A 4.5 Mw Solar Energy Center, Archit Patnaik Jan 2016

A Statistical Analysis Of A 4.5 Mw Solar Energy Center, Archit Patnaik

Masters Theses

"This project helps a regional utility evaluate the performance of their 4.5 MW photovoltaic plant. The performance evaluation consists of characterizing the peak and average power and energy output of the plant over varying time periods. A characterization of the output power drops, or dips, is done by performing a statistical analysis of the photovoltaic plant output data. Dips are characterized by dip frequency, depth of dip, energy loss by dip, and dip duration. The results of this study will help the utility to select appropriate voltage regulating equipment on the basis of dip characteristics, and thus, optimize the performance …

Hybrid Fuzzy-Pid Controller For Buck-Boost Converter In Solar Energy-Battery Systems, Karime Farhood Hussein May 2015

Hybrid Fuzzy-Pid Controller For Buck-Boost Converter In Solar Energy-Battery Systems, Karime Farhood Hussein

Masters Theses

In the present work, we propose a hybrid fuzzy PID control system to prevent overshoot and oscillations in DC-DC buck-boost converter for solar-battery system. We design and simulate a PID, a Fuzzy logic controller, and hybrid fuzzy PID control system to stabilize the output voltage of the buck-boost converter. The performance results using dynamic response of all of these controllers in terms of rise time, overshoot, peak time, and voltage oscillation are presented. The simulation results support the validity and advantages of the hybrid method.

Analysis Of Passive Louver Shading Systems And Impact On Interior Environment, Cory Joseph Brennan Jan 2012

Analysis Of Passive Louver Shading Systems And Impact On Interior Environment, Cory Joseph Brennan

Masters Theses

An installed passive louver shading systems can affect the heating, cooling, and lighting loads of any building, by altering the amount of solar energy, in the form of light and heat, from entering. The benefits of a louver system are derived from the application of solar geometry incident on the site and the climate within the area. By optimizing a passive louver system's design parameters, a building can reduce the total annual energy consumption due to artificial heating, cooling loads and artificial lighting. This research has implemented simulation modeling software, Energy Plus, to predict the effect of passive louver shades …

Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance With The Use Of Silver And Titanium Oxide Nanostructures, Charles Wei-Shing Chin Aug 2011

Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance With The Use Of Silver And Titanium Oxide Nanostructures, Charles Wei-Shing Chin

Masters Theses

Light scattering and surface Plasmon calculations were done on a variety of novel geometries using the DDSCAT software package, which simulates the scattering of objects using the discrete dipole approximation method. Calculations were done on core shell nanoparticles consisting of a silver shell and a TiO2 core in order to determine changes in the extinction spectrum and the near field patterns. Several geometries were tested, including spheres, cylinders, and hexagons, each of varying size and number. It was determined that when geometries were coupled together, there was significant near field enhancement where the geometries were in contact. This enhancement …
