"This investigation deals with a series of column tests of aluminum I-sections which have a perforated web. Specifically, the tests show that the weight is decreased without decrease in strength. Several basic assumptions are made in the design of a column. The physical action of a column is idealized in the derivation of formulae which will predict within reasonable limits the load which the member will sustain. In a given installation of non-homogeneity of material, kinks, uneven bearing, lack of symmetry due to riveting or welding, stress concentration and many other disturbing factors not in agreement with these assumptions may …
