Microgrid Capability Diagram: A Tool For Optimal Grid-Tied Operation, Athmi Jayawardena, Lasantha Meegahapola, Duane A. Robinson, Sarath Perera

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The microgrid paradigm has gained much interest in the electricity industry due to the increased penetration of distributed resources. A grid-tied microgrid can be viewed as a single generating entity or a load depending on its power export and import at the grid supply point. Similar to conventional generators, grid-tied microgrids have the potential to be able to participate in the energy market in the future to achieve technical, financial and environmental benefits. Effective participation in the energy markets requires numerous planning tools and a comprehensive understanding of the full capability of the microgrid. This paper presents a systematic approach …

Capability Chart: A New Tool For Grid-Tied Microgrid Operation, Athmi Jayawardena, Lasantha Meegahapola, Daniel Robinson, Sarath Perera

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Increasing penetration of distributed resources have enabled the development of the microgrid concept. Similar to traditional generators, microgrids can participate in the energy market to achieve technical, economical and environmental benefits. In order to facilitate the participation in energy markets, microgrid operators need to be aware of the full capability of the microgrids. This paper presents a systematic approach for developing a capability chart for a grid-tied microgrid which represents the active and reactive power capability at the grid supply point. Capability charts have been developed for two different microgrids and the impacts of different modelling aspects have been analysed …

Dynamic Characteristics Of A Hybrid Microgrid With Inverter And Non- Inverter Interfaced Renewable Energy Sources: A Case Study, A V. Jayawardena, L G. Meegahapola, S Perera, D A. Robinson Jan 2012

Dynamic Characteristics Of A Hybrid Microgrid With Inverter And Non- Inverter Interfaced Renewable Energy Sources: A Case Study, A V. Jayawardena, L G. Meegahapola, S Perera, D A. Robinson

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Microgrids are becoming important constituents of electric power distribution networks. Microgrids are typically comprised of both inverter interfaced (e.g. double-fed induction generator (DFIG), solar-photovoltaic (PV) system) and non-inverter interfaced (e.g. synchronous generator) renewable energy generators (REGs), hence their dynamic characteristics are significantly different from the conventional grids comprised of centralised synchronous generators. Different inherent characteristics of REGs, power dispatch levels, relative REG capacities, and external grid characteristics are some of the important features of significant interest in relation to microgrid dynamic behaviour. For this study a microgrid model was developed in DIgSILENT Power Factory based on the IEEE-13 bus system …

Feasibility Study Of Microgrid Application In Langkawi And Socotra Islands, Ahmed Haidar Jan 2011

Feasibility Study Of Microgrid Application In Langkawi And Socotra Islands, Ahmed Haidar

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Alternative Energy is becoming a popular and an essential energy resource in the current century. This paper investigates the effect of using a hybrid microgrid system in Langkawi and Socotra Islands. Configuration of the optimal hybrid system is selected based on the best components and its sizing with appropriate operation strategy to provide a cheap efficient, reliable and cost effective system. The total net present cost for the two Islands has been determined using HOMER program based on the Island’s data. This finding will help to install sources of renewable energy in places that will ensure low cost and performance …
