Permeable Reactive Barrier (Prb) Technology: An Innovative Solution For The Remediation Of Acidic Groundwater From Acid Sulphate Soil (Ass) Terrain, Laura Banasiak, Buddhima Indraratna

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

The remediation of acidic groundwater contaminated with potentially toxic metals such as aluminium (Al) and iron (Fe) resulting from the oxidation of sulphidic materials in acid sulphate soils (ASSs) is a challenging geo-environmental problem that requires innovative engineering solutions. In low-lying coastal floodplains, the remediation strategies of groundwater manipulation (e.g. fixed-level weirs) and tidal buffering (e.g. two-way modified floodgates) are not feasible due to the risk of flooding during heavy rainfall events and their inability to prevent pyritic oxidation. In view of this in 2006, the first pilot subsurface permeable reactive barrier (PRB) using recycled concrete for the remediation of …

Practice And Prospects Of Fully Mechanized Mining Technology For Thin Coal Seams In China, F Wang, S Tu, Qingsheng Bai

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

In China, thin coal seams are rich in resources but are technically challenging. The mineable reserves in these seams account for 20.4% of the total coal resources, while the current production accounts for only 10.4% of the total annual production. Characteristics such as narrow mining space, low level of mechanization, poor working environment, and high cost of mining, restrict the development of mining safety and efficiency. Recently, fully mechanized mining technology has developed rapidly for thin coal seams, the level of yield and efficiency has reached or exceeded the international standard, and some state-owned key coal mines are considering automation …

The release of acidic water contaminated with toxic metals such as aluminium (Al) and iron (Fe) resulting from pyrite oxidation within acid sulphate soils (ASSs) is a major environmental issue in Australia. Groundwater manipulation using weirs and modified floodgates is not effective in low-lying floodplains due to the high risk of flooding and their inability to prevent pyrite oxidation. Permeable reactive barrier (PRB) technology has been looked at as an alternative remediation technique in ASS terrain. Batch and short-term column tests were used to choose a suitable reactive material for the remediation of acidic water and the removal of Al …

During heat treatment process, the distortion behavior inevitably appears in hydraulic turbine blade castings. In this research, a technology was developed for real-time measurement of the distortion in hydraulic turbine blade castings at the still air cooling and forced air cooling stages during heat treatment process. The method was used to measure the distortion behavior at the cooling stages in both normalizing and tempering processes. At the normalization, the distortion at the blade corner near outlet side undergoes four stages with alternating bending along positive and negative directions. At the tempering stage, the distortion could be divided into two steps. …

In China, thin coal seam are rich in resources and complex in conditions, however, the characteristics such as narrow mining space, the low level of mechanised technology, bad working environment and the high cost of mining, directly restrict the development of mining safety and high-efficiency. In thin coal seams with hard gangue which contains concretions of pyrite, LS-DYNA is applied to calculate the rational blasting parameters and carry out the deep-hole pre-splitting blasting technology, the hard gangue is fractured effectively, hence advancing the productivity of thin coal seam mining. In addition, the mining rate is sped up in thin protective …

Dairy Shed Wastewater Treatment By Anaerobic Digestion Technology, Ling Tie, Muttucumaru Sivakumar

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

Continued growth and consolidation of the livestock industry such as dairy industry has generated large-quantities and high-strength manure, which has long been identified as a major contributor to diffuse source pollution in Australia. However, conventional dairy shed wastewater treatment practices in Australia such as two pond systems still do not provide sufficient treatment. In addition, relevant laws and regulations in terms of nutrient management plans and manure solids disposal require new waste management approaches. Anaerobic digestion (AD) is an efficient, small footprint, cost effective and sustainable technology that should be applied in Australian dairy farms, and has the potential not …

Electrocoagulation (Ec) Technology For Nitrate Removal, Mohammad Emamjomeh, Muttucumaru Sivakumar

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

High nitrate contamination in drinking water is a serious environmental pollutant, as it is generally a problem associated with anthropogenic activities. Sources of nitrate pollution include discharge of chemical fertilizers, human and animal wastes. Excessive application of agricultural fertilizers has been known to cause penetration of large quantities of nitrates into underground and surface waters. Nitrate is a stable and highly soluble ion with low potential for precipitation or adsorption. These properties make it difficult to remove using conventional water treatment method. Several methods have been proposed in the literature for the removal of nitrate. In this project, a laboratory …
