Discontinuities have a great influence on the reduction of rock mass shear strength depending on the geometry, roughness and the nature of infill sediments. These discontinuities are generally filled with different types of sediments. When the infill sediments are saturated, they make a considerable impact on the overall strength of the rock mass. Most infilled discontinuities in the field are overconsolidated due to various factors such as climatic and weathering conditions, as well as hydrothermal alteration. The increase in the thickness of joint infill subdues the otherwise prominent role of joint roughness. This paper presents some of the existing mathematical …

TiO2(B)@SnO2 core–shell hybrid nanowires have been synthesized by a facile hydrothermal process and subsequent liquid phase reaction. Hybrid nanowire electrodes exhibit excellent reversible lithium storage capacity rate capability and good cyclability, mainly due to the particular architecture of the composite, which features an open continuous channel along its axis, facilitating lithium ion diffusion, and provides effective mechanical support for the TiO2(B) core, alleviating the stress produced during discharge–charge cycling and also preventing the pulverization of the Sn nanoparticles. Owing to its superior electrochemical performance, this composite could be a promising potential anode material for lithium …

Clean freshwater is the most precious resource in the world and the development of water resources has had a very long history, as early as humans changed from being hunters and food collectors to modern civilization. At very early stage, people had to rely on creeks, rivers and lakes for their water demand that was relatively small, and today humans have accumulated the knowledge and techniques for water storage, building artificial lakes or reservoirs to meet their huge water demand due to industrialization and urbanization. The Wworld’s earliest large dam was the Sadd-el-kafara Dam built in Egypt between 2950 and …

Positron emission mammography ("PEM") is a breast imaging modality that typically involves the administration of relatively high doses of radiotracer. In order to reduce tracer costs and consider PEM for global screening applications, it would be helpful to reduce the required amount of administered radiotracer so that patient dose would be comparable to conventional x-ray mammograms. We performed GATE Monte Carlo investigations of several possible camera configurations. Increasing the detector thickness from 10 to 30 mm, increasing the camera surface area from 5 x 20cm2 to 20 x 20cm2, and applying depth-ofinteraction information to increase the acceptance angle, increased the …

Fast And Accurate Proton Computed Tomography Image Reconstruction For Applications In Proton Therapy, Scott Penfold, R. W. Schulte, V. Bashkirov, Anatoly B. Rosenfeld

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

Proton computed tomography has been suggested as a means for maximizing the potential benefits of proton radiation therapy. By measuring individual proton energy losses after traversing an object and predicting paths of maximum likelihood through the image space, relative stopping power maps can be generated for treatment planning and image guidance. However, the processes of proton interaction with the imaged object lead to a number of challenges in the image reconstruction procedure. In this work we describe our approach to obtaining accurate relative stopping power maps in the shortest amount of time.

This paper presents initial results from electrical, spectroscopic and ion beam induced charge (IBIC) characterisation of a novel silicon PIN detector, featuring an on-chip n -channel JFET and matched feedback capacitor integrated on its p-side (frontside). This structure reduces electronic noise by minimising stray capacitance and enables highly efficient optical coupling between the detector back-side and scintillator, providing a fill factor of close to 100%. The detector is specifically designed for use in high resolution gamma cameras, where a pixellated scintillator crystal is directly coupled to an array of silicon photodetectors. The on-chip JFET is matched with the photodiode …

Several existing equations for solving the non-linear soil-hydraulic properties are introduced and validated to field and laboratory measured data. Models for non-linear hydraulic properties of unsaturated porous media arise from statistical and mathematical fit through the measured data and they can be expressed in forms of unsaturated permeability versus either pressure head or volumetric moisture content. This paper presents the difference models: Gardner, Knuze et al., Haverkamp et al., van Genuchten and Saxton et al. for calculation of hydraulic properties coefficients, typicallyunsaturated permeability. The accurate and computational efficiency of these five existing models are evaluated for a series of study …

Magnetorheological elastomers (MREs) are smart materials whose mechanical properties, like their modulus and elasticity, can be controlled by an external magnetic field. This feature has resulted in a number of novel applications, such as adaptive tuned dynamic vibration absorbers for suppressing unwanted vibrations over a wide frequency range. MRE-based devices operate in different modes, such as shear mode and squeeze mode; however, the study of mechanical performances of MREs under squeeze mode is very rare. This article aims to investigate MRE performances under both shear and squeeze modes. Experimental studies and simulations were conducted to analyze the MR effect in …

Critical Risk Points Of Nanofiltration And Reverse Osmosis Processes In Water Recycling Applications, Long Nghiem, Andrea Schaefer

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

NF/RO membrane filtration processes have been recognized as an important technology to facilitate water recycling. Those processes are well-proven technologies, which can be used to remove a wide range of contaminants including trace contaminants that are of particular concern in water recycling. However, risk implications in association with brine or concentrate and membrane cleaning wastewater disposal have to date not been adequately understood. This study examines the adsorption and release process of several endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) during NF/RO filtration processes. Results reported here indicate that the membrane can serve as a large reservoir for EDCs and their release may be …

Early patents for the Magnetically Impelled Arc Butt process (MIAB) date back to 1940 [1] and the basic principles of the process have remained unchanged from this time. The process was however refined in the 1970s for use in the production of automotive components and has been used extensively in this area. Investigation of the process for pipe girth welding have been reported and commercial pipe welding heads are reported to be available in the Ukraine [2], Although the process is well established it is believed that a more fundamental analysis of the mechanisms involved would assist in the optimisation …

A General Review Of Applications Of Artificial Neural Network To Water Industry, Xin Mi, Muttucumaru Sivakumar

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

This paper presents case studies of applications of artificial neural network (ANN) to water industry including water treatment, water quality and water consumption. Overall, ANN was found to be superior to time series and multiple regression analysis for most applications. At the same time, however, ANN is a data driven model, so care has to be taken in preparing data for ANN models. Limitations of the current ANN study to coagulant dosages in water treatment plants are presented and further ANN improvements in this field are in progress.
