MgB2/Fe wire samples were prepared by using ball-milled 96% boron (B) powder with strong semi-crystalline phase. We observed samples that contained ball-milled 96% B in comparison with one made from as-supplied commercial 96% B, with the results showing a significant enhancement in the high field transport critical current density (Jct) due to small grain size and better reactivity. However, the inter-grain connectivity became worse, which could lead to poor Jct in low field and an increased level of disorder.

The adsorption of Li ions on boron doped graphene was investigated using a first-principles method. Our results show that, as boron doping turns graphene into an electron-deficient system, more Li ions can be captured around boron doped centers than in pristine graphene. One boron atom doped into graphene (6C ring unit) can adsorb six Li ions, which indicates that boron doped graphene is an efficient Li-ion storage material for lithium batteries. Further investigations show that, under limited conditions, boron doped graphene (BC5) can form Li6BC5 compound after Li-ion adsorption, corresponding to a lithium storage capacity …

The removal of the trace inorganic contaminants boron (B(OH)4−), fluoride (F−) and nitrate (NO3−) from synthetic aqueous solutions containing organic matter using electrodialysis was investigated. The transport of the contaminants through the ion-exchange membranes was evaluated in relation to hydrated ionic radius, whereby a positive correlation was found in absence of organic matter. NO3−, with the smaller hydrated ionic radius and weaker hydration shell, was removed more effectively than F−, which has a larger hydrated ionic radius and stronger hydration shell. The removal of F− and NO3− was not significantly influenced by solution pH due to their pH independent speciation. …

Studies of the magnetic field dependence of the transport critical current density (Jct) and the grain connectivity of MgB2/Fe wires fabricated from ball-milled boron have been conducted in detail, and strong correlations have been found, as evidenced by differences in grain size, critical transition temperature, and resistivity. It was observed that the samples fabricated by ball milling had relatively small grain sizes, resulting in a strong field dependence of the Jct in the high field region. On the other hand, the ball-milled boron was associated with poor connectivity between adjacent grains. It is clearly …
