Simplified Modeling Of Bonded Prestressed High Strength Concrete Girders During Fire Exposure, Yi Mao Feb 2023

Simplified Modeling Of Bonded Prestressed High Strength Concrete Girders During Fire Exposure, Yi Mao

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

To evaluate the behavior of structures exposed to fire and estimate their structural fire resistance, engineers need design tools to overcome the complexities associated with structural analysis during fire exposure. These complexities include the uneven distribution of temperature within the structural elements and the deterioration in material properties. The current study introduces a simplified numerical model to evaluate the flexural behavior of bonded prestressed high-strength concrete sections exposed to fire. The model starts by predicting the temperature distribution within a structural element using 2-D finite difference analysis. It then uses one-dimensional sectional analysis to estimate the section behavior. The numerical …

Performance-Based Design Of Fire-Exposed Reinforced Concrete Elements Using An Equivalent Standard Fire, Robert T. Kuehnen Apr 2019

Performance-Based Design Of Fire-Exposed Reinforced Concrete Elements Using An Equivalent Standard Fire, Robert T. Kuehnen

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Fire events represent one of the most severe loading scenarios for reinforced concrete (RC) buildings. In lieu of intensive computational analysis, designers need simplified methods to assess RC members exposed to natural fires. This thesis focuses on the development of a time equivalent (te) to replace a natural fire with an equivalent standard fire, allowing for the implementation of existing simplified analysis methods.

The proposed te is based on the average internal temperature profile (AITP) that develops in a section during fire. Two AITP te are proposed to accurately or conservatively approximate the AITP of …

Behavior Of Fire-Exposed Rc Frames Before And After Jacketing, M. Monir M. Ajan Alhadid Oct 2016

Behavior Of Fire-Exposed Rc Frames Before And After Jacketing, M. Monir M. Ajan Alhadid

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Analysis and design of fire-exposed Reinforced Concrete (RC) frames before and after jacketing with concrete layers are commonly performed using prescriptive methods that rely on the concept of fire rating. These methods were developed based on empirical results on individual RC members subjected to certain fire conditions. In typical fire scenarios, the residual capacity, stiffness and thermal deformations affects not only the local performance of each fire-exposed member, but also the load redistribution and global behavior of the entire frame. In terms of fire safety, the philosophy of the new building codes considers objective-based design as an alternative of the …
