Video data is now commonly used for analysis in surveillance, security, medical and many other fields. The development of low cost but high-quality portable cameras has contributed significantly to this trend. One such trend includes non-invasive vital statistics monitoring of infants in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU). National Center for Health Statistics Publications has reported a high infant death rate (23,215 in 2014). This statistic has drawn the interest of health system professionals. Due to occurrence of conditions like bradycardia, apnea and hypoxia, these preterm infants are kept in an NICU for constant monitoring. One of the problems faced at …

Piezoelectric-Based Cardiac Monitoring Portable System, Shina Siamak Mokhtari Nov 2018

Piezoelectric-Based Cardiac Monitoring Portable System, Shina Siamak Mokhtari

Electrical Engineering Theses

In this thesis, a portable-based cardiac monitoring system is discussed, which helps to keep a check on the corresponding patient vitals. This work describes the design and development of a Bluetooth system, incorporating a piezoelectric sensor-sheet. The demonstrated prototype avoids the need for collecting the signals with wires. When the Bluetooth-connected piezoelectric sensor is attached to the human chest, the cardiac mechanical activity will induce a local strain in the active piezoelectric materials layer. This strain is converted to an electrical output voltage which is then collected and transmitted through the Bluetooth system. Piezoelectric theory and signal processing methods are …

Design And Implementation Of Wireless Smart Home Energy Management System Using Rule-Based Controller, Eslam Salah Fayez Al-Hassan

Electrical Engineering Theses

Most residential units still rely on conventional energy supplied by utilities despite the continuous growth of renewable energy resources, such as solar and wind energy systems in power distribution networks. Utilities often use time-of-use energy pricing, which increases the interest of energy consumers, such as those in commercial and residential buildings, in reducing their energy usage. Thus, this work demonstrates the design and implementation of a home energy management (HEM) system that can automatically control home appliances to reduce daily energy and electricity bill. The system consists of multiple smart sockets that can read the power consumption of an attached …

Design And Implementation Of Fuzzy Controller For Non-Linear Thermally Insulated Mimo Greenhouse Building Utilizing Weather Conditions And Ground Temperature, Raghed Abdul Menam Al Housari

Electrical Engineering Theses

The increased demand of electricity and water consumption for cooling and heating processes together with the continuous increase in earth temperature due to greenhouse gases emission urged the utilization of sustainable, affordable and clean energy resources. Globally, the biggest amount of water is consumed for agricultural purposes. Domestically, in Abu Dhabi Emirate, the agriculture sector consumes over 50% of the supplied water. Part of this consumption is due to the evaporative cooling approach that is typically used in cooling greenhouses. This approach utilizes a large amount of water and energy to maintain the greenhouse temperature within the desired range. Ground …

Assessment Of Risk In Preterm Infants Using Point Process And Machine Learning Approaches, Venkata Naga Sai Apurupa Amperayani May 2018

Assessment Of Risk In Preterm Infants Using Point Process And Machine Learning Approaches, Venkata Naga Sai Apurupa Amperayani

Electrical Engineering Theses

Preemies, infants who are born too soon, have a higher incidence of Life-Threatening Events (LTE’s) such as apnea (cessation of breathing), bradycardia (slowing of heart rate) and hypoxemia (oxygen desaturation) also termed as ABD (Apnea, Bradycardia, and Desaturation) events. Clinicians at Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU) are facing the demanding task of assessing the risk of infants based on their physiological signals. The aim of this thesis is to develop a risk stratification algorithm using a machine-learning framework with the features related to pathological fluctuations derived from point process model that will be embedded into the current physiological recording system …

Digital Enhancement Of Analog Measurement Systems For Temperature Compensation Of Strain Gages, Islombek Karimov May 2018

Digital Enhancement Of Analog Measurement Systems For Temperature Compensation Of Strain Gages, Islombek Karimov

Electrical Engineering Theses

Generally known temperature compensation techniques for strain gages (like the use of a dummy gage or the implementation of half- and full-bridge configurations) are not applicable to all strain-measurement situations and cannot fully compensate for all sources of error. Digital Enhancement of Analog Measurement Systems presents a universal method of corrections for these effects in which temperature is measured independently of other variables and ex post facto corrections are computed and applied to digitized readings of the analog measurement system.

A single, linear-pattern strain gage, self-temperature-compensated for steel 1018, has been utilized in a quarter-bridge to measure tensile strain in …
