Local Learning Algorithms For Stochastic Spiking Neural Networks, Bleema Rosenfeld
Local Learning Algorithms For Stochastic Spiking Neural Networks, Bleema Rosenfeld
Dissertations
This dissertation focuses on the development of machine learning algorithms for spiking neural networks, with an emphasis on local three-factor learning rules that are in keeping with the constraints imposed by current neuromorphic hardware. Spiking neural networks (SNNs) are an alternative to artificial neural networks (ANNs) that follow a similar graphical structure but use a processing paradigm more closely modeled after the biological brain in an effort to harness its low power processing capability. SNNs use an event based processing scheme which leads to significant power savings when implemented in dedicated neuromorphic hardware such as Intel’s Loihi chip.

Atmospheric Turbulence Distortion In Video: Restoration Utilizing Sparse Analysis, Benjamin J. Sanda
Atmospheric Turbulence Distortion In Video: Restoration Utilizing Sparse Analysis, Benjamin J. Sanda
Dissertations
The removal of atmospheric turbulence (AT) distortion in long range imaging is one of the most challenging areas of research in imaging processing with an immediate need for solutions in several applications such as in military and transportation systems. AT exacerbates distortion due to non-linear geometric blur and scintillations in long-distance images and videos, severely reducing image quality and information interpretation. AT negatively impacts both human and computer vision systems, compromising visibility essential for accurate object identification and tracking.
In this dissertation, a novel sparse analysis framework is developed to address efficient AT blur and scintillation removal in video. Operating …
Development Of Piezoelectric Sensors And Methodology For Noninvasive Simultaneous Detection Of Multiple Vital Signs, Areen Abdallah Romi Allataifeh
Development Of Piezoelectric Sensors And Methodology For Noninvasive Simultaneous Detection Of Multiple Vital Signs, Areen Abdallah Romi Allataifeh
Dissertations
The activity of piezoelectric material linked the applied electric field with the strain generated that can be translated into geometrical variations. Flexible steel substrate exhibits fascinating mechanical properties which enable their integration into the emerging field of flexible microelectronics. This work presents an extended technique based on capacitance-voltage dependency to extract the geometrical variations in thin-film piezoelectric materials deposited on a flexible steel. A 50 μm flexible steel sheet has been sandwiched by two PZT film layers, each of 2.4 μm in thickness deposited by sputtering. An aluminum layer of 370 nm has been deposited above each PZT layer to …
System Design And Performance Analysis Of Asymmetrically And Symmetrically Clipped Optical (Asco)-Ofdm For Im/Dd Optical Wireless Communications, Nan Wu
Dissertations
As the quantity of mobile communication devices, such as cellphones, tablets, and laptops, dramatically increase, the demand for high speed wireless service has been growing. Optical wireless communications (OWCs), which offer unlimited transmission bandwidth, have received a lot of attention and been studied in recent decades. They can be an effective alternative to radio frequency communications (RFCs) for indoor high speed data transmission. Intensity modulation direct detection (IM/DD) is a simple way to realize the transmission of optical wireless signals in an indoor environment. Information data streams are modulated into the intensity of optical carriers and transmitted by light emitting …
Monitoring Of Cerebellar Injury Using Micro Ecog Signals In Ketamine/Xylazine Treated Rats, Gokhan Ordek
Monitoring Of Cerebellar Injury Using Micro Ecog Signals In Ketamine/Xylazine Treated Rats, Gokhan Ordek
Dissertations
Much of the cerebellar research has been conducted in anesthetized animals, particularly using ketamine/xylazine combination in rats, and yet the absolute impact of the anesthesia on the neural circuit remains unanswered . In the current study, spontaneous electrical activity and sensory evoked potentials from the cerebellar surface with chronically implanted, flexible-substrate, multielectrode arrays in rats were collected and analyzed with the motor cortex signals. The power spectra and the intercontact coherence plots of the spontaneous activity in the awake-quiet animals extended up to 800 Hz in the cerebellum and only up to 200 Hz in the motor cortex. Ketamine/xylazine anesthesia …
Target Localization In Mimo Radar Systems, Hana Godrich
Target Localization In Mimo Radar Systems, Hana Godrich
Dissertations
MIMO (Multiple-Input Multiple-Output) radar systems employ multiple antennas to transmit multiple waveforms and engage in joint processing of the received echoes from the target. MIMO radar has been receiving increasing attention in recent years from researchers, practitioners, and funding agencies. Elements of MIMO radar have the ability to transmit diverse waveforms ranging from independent to fully correlated. MIMO radar offers a new paradigm for signal processing research. In this dissertation, target localization accuracy performance, attainable by the use of MIMO radar systems, configured with multiple transmit and receive sensors, widely distributed over an area, are studied. The Cramer-Rao lower bound …

Sensorimotor Experience In Virtual Environments, Katherine Grace August
Dissertations
The goal of rehabilitation is to reduce impairment and provide functional improvements resulting in quality participation in activities of life, Plasticity and motor learning principles provide inspiration for therapeutic interventions including movement repetition in a virtual reality environment, The objective of this research work was to investigate functional specific measurements (kinematic, behavioral) and neural correlates of motor experience of hand gesture activities in virtual environments stimulating sensory experience (VE) using a hand agent model. The fMRI compatible Virtual Environment Sign Language Instruction (VESLI) System was designed and developed to provide a number of rehabilitation and measurement features, to identify optimal …
Some Contributions On Mimo Radar, Nikolaus Lehmann
Some Contributions On Mimo Radar, Nikolaus Lehmann
Dissertations
Motivated by recent advances in Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) wireless communications, this dissertation aims at exploring the potential of MIMO approaches in the radar context. In communications, MIMO systems combat the fading effects of the multi-path channel with spatial diversity. Further, the scattering environment can be used by such systems to achieve spatial multiplexing. In radar, a complex target consisting of several scatterers takes the place of the multi-path channel of the communication problem. A target's radar cross section (RCS), which determines the amount of returned power, greatly varies with the considered aspect. Those variations significantly impair the detection …
Characterization Of Mismatch Between Behavioral Stimuli And Frmi Data Using The Kalman Filter, Jason Steffener
Characterization Of Mismatch Between Behavioral Stimuli And Frmi Data Using The Kalman Filter, Jason Steffener
Dissertations
The advance of blood oxygen level dependent function magnetic resonance imaging, (BOLD fMRI), allows researchers to non-invasively investigate the functioning human brain. The BOLD fMRI response to brief stimuli is called the hemodynamic response function (HRF), which can vary across brain regions and across subjects.
Models of the HRF are used to increase sensitivity of statistical maps; however, they often don't account for spatial and temporal variance. Physiological effects, such as learning, fatigue or habituation, introduce mismatch between statistical models and the data. Methods that use minimal a priori information and track time varying signals are able to show the …
