Control of dynamic responses of renewable energy device platforms is important for their performance, safe operation and efficiency over their lifetime under regular and extreme wave conditions. Tuned Liquid Column Dampers (TLCDs) have been recently considered as a viable passive control mechanism in this regard but limited information is available in relation to their experimental performance. This paper compares scaled experiments conducted in two different ocean wave basins where floating offshore platforms were retrofitted with multiple TLCDs (MTLCDs). Performance of such MTLCDs in these scaled ocean wave basins are evaluated and compared considering control of dynamic responses for a specific …
Sediment Transport Modelling On The River Bandon, John Gamble, Joseph R. Harrington
Sediment Transport Modelling On The River Bandon, John Gamble, Joseph R. Harrington
Conference Papers
In November 2009 Ireland was subject to a severe weather event, causing widespread flooding nationwide. One of the worst effected towns was the town of Bandon in County Cork which regularly floods. The River Bandon is located in the South Western River District (SWRBD) with a catchment area of 608km2 . The River Bandon offers a positive environment for biodiversity, facilitating habitats for some endangered species. The River Bandon is planned to undergo significant river improvement works. This paper presents the findings of an extensive sediment sampling, testing and analysis programme, including for suspended and bed sediments and sediment loadings. …

Stock Aggregation Model And Virtual Archetype For Large Scale Retrofit Modelling Of Local Authority Housing In Ireland, James Pittam, Paul D. O’Sullivan, Garrett O’Sullivan

Developing representative archetypes using a bottom up approach for stock modelling is an excellent tool for evaluating the overall performance of the building stock; however it requires detailed analysis of the various building types. Currently there is no detailed housing data base for Local Authority housing in Cork City, Ireland that catalogues the housing stocks geometric properties and thermal characteristics for each typology. This study details a methodology to catalogue the LAH stock and build a detailed housing data base. The GIS web based mapping application Google Street View is used to identify 20 house typologies across 36 LAH developments; …
Sediment And Nutrient Behaviour On The River Bandon, Ireland, S. T. Harrington, Joseph R. Harrington
Sediment And Nutrient Behaviour On The River Bandon, Ireland, S. T. Harrington, Joseph R. Harrington
Conference Papers
This paper presents aspects of sediment and nutrient behaviour on the River Bandon which is located in the South Western River Basin District in Ireland; it is a relatively large sized river catchment in an Irish context with a catchment area of 608 km2. The river catchment is primarily agricultural with some pockets of urban development. The river is prone to flooding on stretches, features a number of special areas of conservation and is distinguished by both suspended and bed load transport. Continuous monitoring of turbidity commenced in February 2010. Manual sampling and testing for suspended sediment concentration and a …

The Influence Of Storm Based Events On The Suspended Sediment Flux In A Small Scale River Catchment In Ireland, Sean T. Harrington, Joseph R. Harrington

Fine sediment plays a key role in the transport of contaminants in rivers and the quantification of suspended sediment flux is important to understanding and managing river catchments in the context of the EU Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EC). Recent European studies identified Ireland as having a paucity of sediment and sediment associated pollutant concentration and flux data. This paper presents the results of a continuous monitoring programme on a small scale catchment (105 km2 ) in Ireland, the River Owenabue, which is located in the South Western River Basin District. Analysis was undertaken to determine event based fluxes and their …
