The project, in partnership with Santa Clara University Frugal Innovation Hub and Instituto de Investigacion y Proyeccion sobre Ciencia y Tecnologia (INCYT) at Universidad Rafael Landivar, aimed to provide Panimache II, a small volcanic Guatemalan community, with access to clean and affordable water. The team designed a water treatment plant and distribution system, consisting of a hydraulic flocculator, sedimentation basin, slow-sand filter, and chlorination chamber, to remove the high levels of ash and other suspended solids.
