Detachment Of Human Endothelial Cells Under Flow From Wettability Gradient Surfaces With Different Functional Groups, T. G. Ruardy, H. E. Moorlag, J. M. Schakenraad, H. C. Van Der Mei, H. J. Busscher

Cells and Materials

In this study, the position bound adhesion, spreading and detachment under flow of human umbilical cord endothelial cells (HUVEC) was studied on a dichlorodimethylsilane (DDS), dimethylocta-decylchlorosilane (DOCS) and tridecafluor-1,1,2,2-tetrahydrooctyl-1-dimethylchlorosilane (TFCS) wettability gradient on glass. Gradient surfaces were prepared by the diffusion method and characterized by the Wilhelmy plate technique for their wettability and by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) for their chemical composition. Quantitative analysis of the cellular response on the wettability gradient surfaces showed that the position bound cellular response was influenced by wettability for each type of gradient in a different way. On DDS-wettability gradients, cells withstood flow best …

The Effect Of Vitronectin And Other Extracellular Matrix Molecules On Endothelial Expansion And Plasminogen Activation, P. Anne Underwood, Penny A. Bean Jan 1996

The Effect Of Vitronectin And Other Extracellular Matrix Molecules On Endothelial Expansion And Plasminogen Activation, P. Anne Underwood, Penny A. Bean

Cells and Materials

Endothelial recovery following procedures used to alleviate blood vessel occlusion is modulated by the local extracellular matrix upon which it has to migrate and proliferate. This extracellular material is derived from vessel wall cells, and plasma proteins which bind to the exposed surfaces. We have demonstrated that vitronectin adsorbs efficiently to tissue culture polystyrene in competition with other plasma proteins, which suggests that it may adsorb to biomaterial surfaces in vivo. We have compared the adhesion, migration and proliferation of human umbilical artery endothelial cells on surface-coated vitronectin, with other extracellular matrix molecules encountered in this environment, namely fibronectin, …

Scanning Electron Microscopy Study Of Biofilms On Silicone Voice Prosthesis, T. R. Neu, F. Dijk, G. J. Verkerke, H. C. Van Der Mei, H. J. Busscher Jan 1992

Scanning Electron Microscopy Study Of Biofilms On Silicone Voice Prosthesis, T. R. Neu, F. Dijk, G. J. Verkerke, H. C. Van Der Mei, H. J. Busscher

Cells and Materials

Patients after laryngectomy often receive silicone made voice prostheses fot speech rehabilitation. The prosthesis is inserted in a shunt between the trachea and the digestive tract. As the prosthesis is placed in a nonsterile environment it becomes rapidly colonized by microorganisms eventually leading to failure and frequent exchange of the implant. In this study, explanted "Groningen Button" silicone voice prostheses were used to investigate by scanning electron microscopy the biofilm developing on the implant. Two main types of microbial colonization forms could be distinguished. Firstly, macroscopically visible, single colonies dominating on the esophagus side of the prosthesis were found, which …

Scanning Electron Microscopic Evaluation Of The Fractured Surfaces Of Canine Calculi From Substrata With Different Surface Free Energy, H. M. W. Uyen, W. L. Jongebloed, H. J. Busscher Jan 1991

Scanning Electron Microscopic Evaluation Of The Fractured Surfaces Of Canine Calculi From Substrata With Different Surface Free Energy, H. M. W. Uyen, W. L. Jongebloed, H. J. Busscher

Cells and Materials

The strength of adhesion between dental calculus and enamel or dentin surfaces determines the ease with which the calculus can be removed by brushing or professional dental treatment. In this study, we examined the adhesion of canine calculi formed on substrata with different surface free energies (sfe) and roughness by means of scanning electron microscopy. In 4 beagle dogs fenestrated crowns were made on the upper fourth premolars. Subsequently, facings of glass (sfe = 120 mJ. m-2), bovine enamel (sfe = 85 mJ.m-2), bovine dentin (sfe = 92 mJ.m-2), polymethyl-methacrylate (PMMA, sfe = 56 mJ.m-2) and polytetrafluorethylene (PTFE, sfe = …
