Self-supported one-dimensional (1D) mesoporous Pt nanowires (NWs) are prepared by confining micelle assembly in channels of a polycarbonate (PC) membrane. The obtained mesoporous Pt NWs show very high electrochemical activity and excellent durability as catalysts for methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) in comparison with the commercially available Pt black (PtB) catalyst. This work demonstrates that an appropriate combination of both self-supported 1D shape and mesoporous architecture indeed improve the electrocatalytic performances which is critical for further implementation and practical applications.

Electrochemical detection of H-2 using scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) has shown to hold great promise as a sensitive characterization method with high spatial resolution for active surfaces generating H-2. Herein, the factors contributing to the current that is measured by SECM in generation/collection mode for H-2 detection are studied. In particular, the concentration gradient of H-2 at the substrate, the H-2/H+ recycling between the SECM tip and substrate and hemispherical profile of H-2 diffusion has been discussed. Three perovskite nitride oxides CeTiNO2, PrTiNO2, and NdTiNO2 have been synthesized and their electronic structures and photocatalytic activities characterized and compared to LaTiNO2. All three compounds have band gaps that fall in the range 2.0 − 2.1 eV, very similar to LaTiNO2, which enables them to absorb a significant fraction of the visible spectrum. Photocatalytic oxygen evolution studies under visible light irradiation in the presence of a sacrificial electron acceptor (Ag+) show that the activity of NdTiNO2 (16 μmol/g/hr) is comparable to that of LaTiNO2 (17 μmol/g/hr), …

Silicene monolayers grown on Ag(111) surfaces demonstrate a band gap that is tunable by oxygen adatoms from semimetallic to semiconducting type. With the use of low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy, we find that the adsorption configurations and amounts of oxygen adatoms on the silicene surface are critical for band gap engineering, which is dominated by different buckled structures in √13 x √13, 4 x 4, and 2√3 x 2√3 silicene layers. Here we describe for the first time the synthesis of colloidally stable, brightly luminescent perfluorodecyl-capped silicon nanocrystals and compare the properties of solutions and films made from them with those of their perhydrodecyl-capped relatives. The perfluorodecyl capping group compared to the perhydrodecyl capping group yields superior hydrophobicity and much greater resistance to air oxidation, the enhanced electron-withdrawing character induces blue shifts in the wavelength of photoluminescence, and the lower-frequency carbon-fluorine stretching modes disfavor non-radiative relaxation pathways and boost the absolute photoluminescence quantum yield. Together these attributes bode well for advanced materials and biomedical applications founded upon perfluorodecyl-protected silicon nanocrystals.

Vapour phase polymerisation (vpp) of PEDOT to incorporate high levels of a sulphonated manganese porphyrin yields a vivid green conducting polymer that, under illumination, catalyzes selective oxidation of water from seawater from ca. 0.40 V (vs. NHE; Pt counter electrode) without observable chlorine formation. This onset potential is comparable to that of certain metal oxide semiconductors that achieve higher photocurrents but are not capable of selectively oxidising the water in seawater.

Solar-driven water splitting to produce hydrogen may be an ideal solution for global energy and environment issues. Among the various photocatalytic systems, platinum has been widely used to co-catalyse the reduction of protons in water for hydrogen evolution. However, the undesirable hydrogen oxidation reaction can also be readily catalysed by metallic platinum, which limits the solar energy conversion efficiency in artificial photosynthesis. The structures and vibrational properties of a series of styryl-substituted sexithiophenes and their charged species have been examined using resonance Raman spectroscopy in conjunction with density functional theory calculations. The calculated geometries of the radical cations and dications indicate that the quinoidal charged defects are more strongly localized in the center of the thiophene backbone than is observed in other sexithiophenes. This defect confinement, induced by the positions of the styryl substituents, is particularly evident in the dication species. However, the defect confinement weakens when alkoxy groups are added onto the phenyl rings by causing the extension of the charged …
