The performance of the surface zone of concrete is acknowledged as a major factor governing the rate of deterioration of reinforced concrete structures because it provides the only barrier to the ingress of water containing dissolved ionic species such as chlorides, which ultimately initiate corrosion of the reinforcement. In situ monitoring of cover-zone concrete is therefore critical in attempting to make realistic predictions as to the in-service performance of the structure. To this end, this paper presents developments in a remote interrogation system to allow for continuous, real-time monitoring of the cover-zone concrete from an office setting. Use is made …

Clinical Coverage Of An Archetype Repository Over Snomed-Ct., Sheng Yu, Damon Berry, Jesus Bisbal

Articles

Clinical archetypes provide a means for health professionals to design what should be communicated as part of an Electronic Health Record (EHR). An ever-growing number of archetype definitions follow this health information modelling approach, and this international archetype resource will eventually cover a large number of clinical concepts. On the other hand, clinical terminology systems that can be referenced by archetypes also have a wide coverage over many types of health-care information.

No existing work measures the clinical content coverage of archetypes using terminology systems as a metric. Archetype authors require guidance to identify under-covered clinical areas that may need …

Articles

An acrylamide based photopolymer doped with pure silica MFI-type zeolite (silicalite-1) nanoparticles has been characterized for holographic recording purposes. The concentrations of the silicalite-1 nanoparticles in the photopolymer layers were 1, 2.5, 5 and 7.5 wt.%. The inclusion of silicalite-1 nanoparticle in the photopolymer has resulted in an increase of the diffraction efficiency by up to 40%, and decrease of the shrinkage from 1.32% to 0.57%. The best results were obtained in layers doped with 5 wt.% silicalite-1 nanoparticles.

Dc Pulsed Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Jet Image Information, Denis P. Dowling, F T. O'Neill, Vladimir Milosavljevic, Victor J. Law

Articles

This paper presents optical imaging and optical emission spectroscopy (OES) data of an atmospheric-pressure plasma jet. It is shown how the visual information and OES information of the air discharge are related as the blown arc extends from the nozzle (2-4 mm) with a molecular nitrogen rotational temperature on the order of 1700 K and the flowing afterglow beyond this region is dominated by the cooler (300-K) NO-O chemiluminescent reaction that produces NO2 species.

Technical Note: Friction Factor Diagrams For Pipe Flow, Jim Mcgovern Oct 2011

Technical Note: Friction Factor Diagrams For Pipe Flow, Jim Mcgovern

Articles

This technical note describes diagrams of friction factor for pipe flow that have been prepared using, mainly, the equations that Lewis Moody used to prepare his famous diagram in 1944. The preparation of the new diagrams was prompted by the need for vector graphics versions that could be used for teaching purposes and that could be distributed freely to students and others under a Creative Commons Attribution-Share-Alike license. Using a structure very similar to that of Moody's diagram, variants with the Darcy friction factor and the Fanning friction factor have been prepared. In addition, variants have been prepared that include …

Domestic Application Of Micro Wind Turbines In Ireland: Investigation Of Their Economic Viability, Zhe Li, Fergal Boyle, Anthony Reynolds

Articles

Electricity generation from renewable sources of energy will be a key part in the development of future strategies for many countries globally. This renewable electricity generation will be hugely important for Ireland, due to its lack of fossil fuel resources. The extremely good wind resource available provides Ireland with the opportunity of generating vast amount of electricity from wind energy. Large-scale wind electricity generation reached 1264 MW installed capacity by January 2010 in Ireland. However, micro scale wind electricity generation has not been very popular in Ireland to-date. The unclear economics of micro wind turbines, under Irish conditions, is considered …

Numerical Study Of An Ion-Exchanged Glass Waveguide Using Both Two-Dimensional And Three-Dimensional Models, Pengfei Wang, Yuliya Semenova, Jie Zheng, Qiang Wu, Agus Hatta, Gerald Farrell Oct 2011

Numerical Study Of An Ion-Exchanged Glass Waveguide Using Both Two-Dimensional And Three-Dimensional Models, Pengfei Wang, Yuliya Semenova, Jie Zheng, Qiang Wu, Agus Hatta, Gerald Farrell

Articles

A numerical study is carried out to compare the two-dimensional (2-D) case and three-dimensional (3-D) case for the modelling of an ion-exchanged glass waveguide. It is shown that different waveguide widths on the photomask correspond to different ion concentration distributions after an annealing process. A numerical example is presented of two waveguide sections with different widths indicates that due to the abrupt change of the waveguide width, a 3-D theoretical model is required for an accurate prediction of the parameters of ion-exchanged glass waveguides. The good agreement between the modelled and measured results proves that the developed 3-D numerical model …

Rational Efficiency Of A Heat Exchanger, Jim Mcgovern, Brian P. Smyth Sep 2011

Rational Efficiency Of A Heat Exchanger, Jim Mcgovern, Brian P. Smyth

Articles

The authors propose a new and unique definition for the rational efficiency of a heat exchanger. This new rational efficiency is defined in terms of its sub-rational efficiencies: a heat transfer rational efficiency and a friction rational efficiency for each of the fluid systems comprising the heat exchanger. The heat transfer rational efficiency is based on the definition of a mean temperature for the heat source and a mean temperature for the heat sink and reflects the exergy supplied and the exergy received, due to heat transfer only. The friction rational efficiency for each fluid system of the heat exchanger …

Productivity Evaluation Of Self-Adaptive Software Model Driven Architecture, Basel Magableh Sep 2011

Productivity Evaluation Of Self-Adaptive Software Model Driven Architecture, Basel Magableh

Articles

Anticipating context changes using a model-based approach requires a formal procedure for analysing and modelling context-dependent functionality and stable description of the architecture which supports dynamic decision-making and architecture evolution. This article demonstrates the capabilities of the context-oriented component-based application-model-driven architecture (COCA-MDA) to support the development of self- adaptive applications; the authors describe a state-of-the-art case study and evaluate the development effort involved in adopting the COCA-MDA in constructing the application. An intensive analysis of the applica- tion requirements simplified the process of modelling the application’s behavioural model; therefore, instead of modelling several variation models, the developers modelled an extra-functionality …

A Novel High Sensitive Optical Fiber Microphone Based On A Singlemode-Multimode-Singlemode Structure, An Sun, Yuliya Semenova, Qiang Wu, Agus Hatta, Gerald Farrell

Articles

In this paper, a novel multimode interference based optical fiber microphone by employing singlemode-multimode-singlemode (SMS) structure is presented. The acoustic vibration is measured by detecting the transmission loss of the SMS structure that attached to a thick aluminum membrane. Experiments are carried on to test the performance of SMS structured fiber microphone and the experimental results show that the SMS fiber sensor can effectively detect the acoustic signal within the audio range of 20 KHz. It also exhibits a high sensitivity and human voice can also be picked up effectively within the distance of 2 m.

Monofilar Spiral Slot Antenna For Dual-Frequency Dual-Sense Circular Polarization, Xiulong Bao, Max Ammann

Articles

A dual-band antenna with right-hand circular polarization for the first frequency and the counter polarization at the second frequency is realized with compact printed spiral slots. The coupled spiral slots are fed by a 50 Ω microstrip line. Dual-sense circularly-polarized performance is achieved by realizing oppositely-directed current rotation for the two frequency bands. A parametric study shows that the additional slot significantly improves the bandwidth for both frequency bands. Measured results show that the fractional impedance bandwidth is greater than 18% for both bands. The 3 dB axial-ratio bandwidths are 4.5% and 3.5% for the RHCP and LHCP bands, respectively.

Wideband Dual-Frequency Dual-Polarized Dipole-Like Antenna, Xiulong Bao, Max Ammann Aug 2011

Wideband Dual-Frequency Dual-Polarized Dipole-Like Antenna, Xiulong Bao, Max Ammann

Articles

A wideband dual-frequency dual-polarized printed antenna is proposed for LTE, WLAN, and UWB systems. The dual-band antenna provides wide impedance bandwidths of 74% with respect to the center frequency of 2.725 GHz, and 39% with respect to the center frequency of 7.15 GHz. An open slot in the ground plane between the feed arms provides an orthogonal path to realize an embedded circularly polarized band at 2.35 GHz with an axial-ratio bandwidth of 16%. Dual-band characteristics are achieved by an asymmetrical dipole-like element and the coupling configuration between the T-shaped feed line and the wide ground-plane slot.

A Three-Dimensional Hydro-Environmental Model Of Dublin Bay, Zeinab Bedri, Michael Buen, Aodh Dowley Aug 2011

A Three-Dimensional Hydro-Environmental Model Of Dublin Bay, Zeinab Bedri, Michael Buen, Aodh Dowley

Articles

This paper compares a 3-dimensional hydro-ecological model with a 2-dimensional model simulating the distribution and fate of Escherichia Coli (E.Coli) discharges from a sewage treatment plant discharging into Dublin Bay, Ireland. Before being discharged, the effluent from the sewage treatment plant is mixed with cooling water from a thermal generation plant resulting in a warm buoyant sewage plume that can be 7 − 9oC higher than the ambient water in the Bay. The mixing of the stratified plume is complicated by the tidal currents which transport the plume into and out of the estuary. These processes have a direct impact …

Towards A Unified Definition Of Supply Chain Management, Edward Sweeney Jul 2011

Towards A Unified Definition Of Supply Chain Management, Edward Sweeney

Articles

A wide range of definitions of supply chain management (SCM) have been developed over the last three decades. The philosophy of SCM is based firmly on a recognition that it is only by working in a more integrated manner that competitive advantage can be maximised. However, for this to become a reality the development of common definitions and understandings between supply chain partners is a critical success factor. The corollary of this is that a lack of definitional consistency and a common understanding is an inhibitor to the successful adoption of SCM thinking in practice. This paper reviews a number …

Printed Circularly-Polarized Antenna With Ultra-Wide Axial-Ratio Bandwidth, Xiulong Bao, Max Ammann Jun 2011

Printed Circularly-Polarized Antenna With Ultra-Wide Axial-Ratio Bandwidth, Xiulong Bao, Max Ammann

Articles

A circularly polarised printed dipole-like antenna employing asymmetrical arms and an orthogonal slit in the ground plane is presented. It is fed by a stepped microstrip line which connects to the shorter arm. By utilising surface currents on the asymmetrical arms and the orthogonal feedline structure, circular polarisation is realised. Experimental and numerical data are in agreement and the measured results show a fractional impedance bandwidth of 41.3% (1.77–2.69 GHz) and a wide axial-ratio bandwidth of 38.4% (1.81–2.67 GHz).

A Rheological Model Of The Dynamic Behaviour Of Magnetorheological Elastomers, Lin Chen, Stephen Jerrams Jun 2011

A Rheological Model Of The Dynamic Behaviour Of Magnetorheological Elastomers, Lin Chen, Stephen Jerrams

Articles

A rheological model is described that was developed to simulate the dynamic behaviour of magnetorheological elastomers (MREs). The viscoelasticity of the polymer composite, magnetic field induced properties and interfacial slippage between the matrix and particles were modelled by analogy with a standard linear solid model, a stiffness variable spring and a spring-Coulomb friction slider respectively. The loading history and rate dependent constitutive relationships for MREs were derived from the rheological model. The hysteresis loop from shear strain - shear stress plots, which determines the shear modulus and loss factor, were obtained from substituting cyclic loading into these constitutive relationships. The …

An Evaluation Of The Eeg Alpha-To-Theta And Theta-To-Alpha Band Ratios As Indexes Of Mental Workload, Bujar Raufi, Luca Longo

Articles

Many research works indicate that EEG bands, specifically the alpha and theta bands, have been potentially helpful cognitive load indicators. However, minimal research exists to validate this claim. This study aims to assess and analyze the impact of the alpha-to-theta and the theta-to-alpha band ratios on supporting the creation of models capable of discriminating self-reported perceptions of mental workload. A dataset of raw EEG data was utilized in which 48 subjects performed a resting activity and an induced task demanding exercise in the form of a multitasking SIMKAP test. Band ratios were devised from frontal and parietal electrode clusters. …

Studies Of Shrinkage As A Result Of Holographic Recording In Acrylamide Based Photopolymer Film, Mohesh Moothanchery, Izabela Naydenova, Vincent Toal May 2011

Studies Of Shrinkage As A Result Of Holographic Recording In Acrylamide Based Photopolymer Film, Mohesh Moothanchery, Izabela Naydenova, Vincent Toal

Articles

We studied the shrinkage in acrylamide-basedphotopolymer by measuring the Bragg detuning of transmission diffraction gratings recorded at different slant angles and at different intensities. Transmission diffraction gratings of spatial frequency 1000 lines/mm were recorded in an acrylamide-based photopolymer film having 60 ± 5 μm thickness. We have obtained the grating thickness and the final slant angles from the Bragg curve and hence calculated the shrinkage caused by holographic recording. The shrinkage of the material was evaluated for three different recording intensities 1, 5 and 10 mW/cm2, while the total exposure energy was kept constant at 80 mJ/cm2. From the experimental …

Humidity Sensor Based On A Single-Mode Hetero-Core Fiber Structure, Qiang Wu, Yuliya Semenova, Jinesh Mathew, Pengfei Wang, Gerald Farrell

Articles

Using a small-core single-mode fiber (SCSMF), a novel relative humidity (RH) sensor based on an SMF28-SCSMFSMF28 fiber structure was proposed in this paper. By depositing a humidity sensitive material, such as poly (ethylene oxide) (PEO) on the bare SCSMF fiber, the proposed structure can act as an RH sensor with high sensitivity. Experiments demonstrated that the proposed RH sensor with PEO coating can achieve a sensitivity of 430nm per relative humidity unit (RHU) in the RH range from 80% to 83% RH and a sensitivity of 50nm per RHU in the RH range from 83% to 95% RH.
