Chemically Active Rheological Modifiers For The Improved Clinical Use Of Cyanoacrylates, Kyle Joseph Garcia Dec 2018

Chemically Active Rheological Modifiers For The Improved Clinical Use Of Cyanoacrylates, Kyle Joseph Garcia

All Dissertations

Over 100 million surgical incisions, 50 million traumatic wounds, and 20 million minor lacerations from cuts and grazes are treated globally each year. One study determined that globally internal and external wounds occur for 40% and 37% of cases respectively for a total of 111 million patients that were treated for wounds. The remaining 23% of patients were treated for minor lacerations and trauma in the emergency room. These wounds require immediate medical attention including pressure application, sutures, clips, tissue cautery, and/or topical hemostatic agents to cease hemorrhage or the exit of other bodily fluids. With blood flow ceased, wound …

Polymer Injection Forming: A New Age Technology For Manufacturing Polymer-Metal Hybrids, Saeed Farahani Dec 2018

Polymer Injection Forming: A New Age Technology For Manufacturing Polymer-Metal Hybrids, Saeed Farahani

All Dissertations

Due to global competition, manufacturing firms in high-wage countries must target innovation in production processes and technologies that allow the mass manufacturing of customized products through highly efficient processes. Motivated by the concept of the integrative production systems, hybrid process of polymer injection molding and sheet metal forming, known as polymer injection forming (PIF), has been introduced to manufacture sheet metal-polymer components using a single tooling, machinery, and operating system. During this process, the sheet metal blank inside the injection mold is deformed by means of tool movement and/or by pressure of the polymer melt. As the melt cools, the …

Highway Cross Slope Measurement Using Airborne And Mobile Lidar, Alireza Shams Esfandabadi Aug 2018

Highway Cross Slope Measurement Using Airborne And Mobile Lidar, Alireza Shams Esfandabadi

All Dissertations

Ensuring adequate pavement cross slope on highways can improve driver safety by reducing the potential for water sheeting and ponding. Collecting cross slope data is typically only based on small sample because efficient technology and means to collect accurate cross slope data has been evasive. The advent of Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) scanning technology has proven to be a valuable tool in the creation of 3D terrain models. Combined with other technologies such as Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and Inertial Measurement Unit devices (IMU) it is now possible to collect accurate 3D coordinate data in the form of a …

Coupled Hydrological-Geotechnical Model For Determinine Bearing Capacity And Elastic Settlement Of Foundations, Vahidreza Mahmoudabadi Arani Aug 2018

Coupled Hydrological-Geotechnical Model For Determinine Bearing Capacity And Elastic Settlement Of Foundations, Vahidreza Mahmoudabadi Arani

All Dissertations

This dissertation presents a coupled hydrological-geotechnical framework to investigate the performance of shallow and deep foundations under hydrological events such as heavy rainfall and drought. The variation in performance of foundation, interface between the structure and ground surface, is caused by the uncertainties associated with not only the geotechnical parameters but also the hydrological parameters that include intensity and duration of hydrological events and water table depth. The impact of such hydrological events significantly alters the performance of foundations by changing the soil strength and stiffness parameters of subsurface soil which may lead to foundation failures. Such failures can cause …

First Principles-Based Microkinetic Modeling Of Ethanol From Syngas On Bimetallic Co-Pd Catalysts, Anuradha Gundamaraju Aug 2018

First Principles-Based Microkinetic Modeling Of Ethanol From Syngas On Bimetallic Co-Pd Catalysts, Anuradha Gundamaraju

All Dissertations

In the future, the availability of reliable alternative fuels will be crucial for any country to become energy independent. One such alternative is ethanol as it can be used both as a fuel and as a fuel additive. Most of the ethanol produced in the world today is derived from biomass. The biomass feedstocks and fermentation broths used in ethanol production both contain high amounts of water and therefore, the energy efficiency of the process is lessened by product separation processes (azeotropic separation of water and ethanol) that are non-trivial and highly inefficient (due to the evaporation of water). An …

Efficacy Of Smart Pv Inverter As A Strategic Mitigator Of Network Harmonic Resonance And A Suppressor Of Temporary Overvoltage Phenomenon In Distribution Systems, Shriram Srinivasarangan Rangarajan Aug 2018

Efficacy Of Smart Pv Inverter As A Strategic Mitigator Of Network Harmonic Resonance And A Suppressor Of Temporary Overvoltage Phenomenon In Distribution Systems, Shriram Srinivasarangan Rangarajan

All Dissertations

The research work explores the design of Smart PV inverters in terms of modelling and investigates the efficacy of a Smart PV inverter as a strategic mitigator of network harmonic resonance phenomenon and a suppressor of Temporary Overvoltage (TOV) in distribution systems. The new application and the control strategy of Smart PV inverters can also be extended to SmartPark-Plug in Electric Vehicles as the grid becomes smarter.

As the grid is becoming smarter, more challenges are encountered with the integration of PV plants in distribution systems. Smart PV inverters nowadays are equipped with specialized controllers for exchanging reactive power with …
