A Special Protection Scheme Utilizing Trajectory Sensitivity Analysis In Power Transmission, Dan Suriyamongkol Dec 2015

A Special Protection Scheme Utilizing Trajectory Sensitivity Analysis In Power Transmission, Dan Suriyamongkol

All Dissertations

In recent years, new measurement techniques have provided opportunities to improve the North American Power System observability, control and protection. This dissertation discusses the formulation and design of a special protection scheme based on a novel utilization of trajectory sensitivity techniques with inputs consisting of system state variables and parameters. Trajectory sensitivity analysis (TSA) has been used in previous publications as a method for power system security and stability assessment, and the mathematical formulation of TSA lends itself well to some of the time domain power system simulation techniques. Existing special protection schemes often have limited sets of goals and …

Integrated Coherent Combining Of Angled-Grating Broad-Area Lasers: Design, Fabrication And Characterization, Yunsong Zhao Dec 2015

Integrated Coherent Combining Of Angled-Grating Broad-Area Lasers: Design, Fabrication And Characterization, Yunsong Zhao

All Dissertations

In this thesis, we proposed, fabricated and demonstrated the coherent beam combining of angled-grating broad-area lasers. We have obtained the simultaneous coherent beam combining and single transverse mode operation completely on chip without any external phase control/components. Since the single transverse mode is the key to obtain diffraction-limit beam quality and high brightness, the proposed design is a good candidate for high power and high brightness applications. In the proposed coherently combined laser array, we use the angled-grating broad-area laser as the building block and overlap the adjacent emitters at one facet. The overlapped region becomes a 2D coupling region. …

Designing A Minimal-Knowledge Controller To Achieve Fast, Stable Growth For Recombinant Escherichia Coli Cultures, Matthew E. Pepper Aug 2015

Designing A Minimal-Knowledge Controller To Achieve Fast, Stable Growth For Recombinant Escherichia Coli Cultures, Matthew E. Pepper

All Dissertations

The biopharmaceutical industry is constantly developing new recombinant Es-cherichia coli strains to bring new products to market. In early stages of development, small scale bioreactors are used to make the product and explore di˙erent growth pro-tocols. Researchers spend significant time finding a feed rate profile that will give fast growth and low byproduct accumulation. The objective for the controller pre-sented in this work is to achieve fast growth and low acetate accumulation for an E.coli fermentation. The controller does not rely on previous characterization data or models but on fundamental metabolic relationships between oxygen and glucose as dictated by the …

Design Of Reliable And Sustainable Wireless Sensor Networks: Challenges, Protocols And Case Studies, Fan Yang May 2015

Design Of Reliable And Sustainable Wireless Sensor Networks: Challenges, Protocols And Case Studies, Fan Yang

All Dissertations

Integrated with the function of sensing, processing, and wireless communication, wireless sensors are attracting strong interest for a variety of monitoring and control applications. Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have been deployed for industrial and remote monitoring purposes. As energy shortage is a worldwide problem, more attention has been placed on incorporating energy harvesting devices in WSNs. The main objective of this research is to systematically study the design principles and technical approaches to address three key challenges in designing reliable and sustainable WSNs; namely, communication reliability, operation with extremely low and dynamic power sources, and multi-tier network architecture. Mathematical throughput …

Cloud-Based Strategies For Robust Connectivity And Efficient Transmission In Vehicular Networks, Ke Xu May 2015

Cloud-Based Strategies For Robust Connectivity And Efficient Transmission In Vehicular Networks, Ke Xu

All Dissertations

Leveraging multiple wireless technologies and radio access networks, vehicles on the move have the potential to get ubiquitous broadband Internet connectivity. Many studies have put lots of efforts on vehicle-to-vehicle networks for relaying strategies, popular content distribution, etc. However, in dominant infrastructure-based vehicular networks, supporting continuous and fast data transfer for today's prevalent services, e.g. video streaming, for vehicles anytime and anywhere is still a difficult research problem. By looking into such problem, impacts such as intermittent connectivity, dynamic network topology, fluctuating signal coverage, and inefficient transmissions, all result from two root causes in vehicular network- mobility and limited infrastructure …
