Effect Of Morphology And An Upstream Tall Building On A Street Canyon Flow, Haoran Du

The effects of the morphological model and the existence of an upstream tall building on the turbulent street canyon flow and the overlying boundary layer are investigated in a wind tunnel, using Stereoscopic Particle Image Velocimetry (S-PIV) measurements. The velocity variances, Reynolds shear stress, and turbulent kinetic energy are found to be larger than in a similar idealized street canyon model. Increasing building height results in a decrease in vertical mass fluxes across the opening of the canyon, at least in the canyon portion directly downstream of the building. Winching tests were conducted on a mature 24-year-old Norway spruce tree. The tree was instrumented with strain gauges along the root structure and tilt sensors along the tree stem and was winched to failure. Tracked tree-root system response to failure load and the material properties of the tree-root-soil system were used to examine the applicability of simple engineering principles to tree stability analysis. The turbulent flow within a street canyon and the approaching boundary layer has been studied using idealized wind tunnel models and a semi-idealized field experiment conducted in Nantes, France. The effect of upstream roughness on street canyon flow (lateral length/height, L/h = 30) using either 3D (cube) or 2D (rectangular block) upstream roughness, of the same height as the canyon, has been studied for two streamwise canyon width to height aspect ratios (AR) of 1 and 3 using Particle Image Velocimetry. As an important renewable energy source for electricity generation, wind energy must rely on efficient and accurate wind resource assessment for the siting and the design of wind farms. Traditionally relying on numerical modeling, current wind farms built in Canada, notably, experience an under-performance in terms of power generation.
