Development Of A Hybrid Stereotactic Guidance System For Percutaneous Liver Tumour Ablation, Joeana N. Cambranis Romero Oct 2022

Development Of A Hybrid Stereotactic Guidance System For Percutaneous Liver Tumour Ablation, Joeana N. Cambranis Romero

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Stereotactic Image-Guided Surgical Navigation System (IGSNS) supports percutaneous procedures by using medical imaging and tracking information, to assist the surgeons in the preprocedural planning and intraprocedural steps. This thesis describes the development of a stereotactic IGSNS for percutaneous liver tumour ablation, the goal of which is to assist in positioning the tip of the ablation applicator accurately to ensure complete tumour coverage. The main system improvement is the employment of a mini stereotactic patient-attach aiming device that is used as a pointer to ensure needle tip position prior to needle insertion. The thesis chapters describe the development and validation of …

Quantifying The Outcomes Of A Virtual Reality (Vr)-Based Gamified Neck Rehabilitation, Shahan Salim Aug 2019

Quantifying The Outcomes Of A Virtual Reality (Vr)-Based Gamified Neck Rehabilitation, Shahan Salim

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Neck pain is a major global public health concern and adds a significant financial burden to both the healthcare system as well as people suffering from it. Additionally, it presents measurement and evaluation challenges for clinicians as well as adherence challenges and treatment barriers for the patients. We have developed a virtual reality (VR)-based video game that can be used to capture outcomes that may aid in the assessment and treatment of neck pain. We investigated: (i) performance metrics of overall accuracy, accuracy based on movement difficulty, duration, and total envelope of movement; (ii) stability across sessions; (iii) accuracy across …

Design And Evaluation Of Neurosurgical Training Simulator, Trinette L. Wright Nov 2017

Design And Evaluation Of Neurosurgical Training Simulator, Trinette L. Wright

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Surgical simulators are becoming more important in surgical training. Consumer smartphone technology has improved to allow deployment of VR applications and are now being targeted for medical training simulators. A surgical simulator has been designed using a smartphone, Google cardboard 3D glasses, and the Leap Motion (LM) hand controller. Two expert and 16 novice users were tasked with completing the same pointing tasks using both the LM and the medical simulator NeuroTouch. The novice users had an accuracy of 0.2717 bits (SD 0.3899) and the experts had an accuracy of 0.0925 bits (SD 0.1210) while using the NeuroTouch. Novices and …

Evaluation System For Craniosynostosis Surgeries With Computer Simulation And Statistical Modelling, Jing Jin Nov 2016

Evaluation System For Craniosynostosis Surgeries With Computer Simulation And Statistical Modelling, Jing Jin

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Craniosynostosis is a pathology in infants when one or more sutures prematurely closed, leading to abnormal skull shape. It has been classified according to the specific suture that has been closed, each of which has a typical skull shape. Surgery is the common treatment to correct the deformed skull shape and to reduce the excessive intracranial pressure. Since every case is unique, the cranial facial teams have difficulties to select an optimum solution for a specific patient from multiple options. In addition, there is not an appropriate quantified measurement existed currently to help cranial facial team to quantitatively evaluate their …

Virtual Reality Simulator For Training In Myringotomy With Tube Placement, Caiwen Huang Apr 2016

Virtual Reality Simulator For Training In Myringotomy With Tube Placement, Caiwen Huang

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Myringotomy refers to a surgical incision in the eardrum, and it is often followed by ventilation tube placement to treat middle-ear infections. The procedure is difficult to learn; hence, the objectives of this work were to develop a virtual-reality training simulator, assess its face and content validity, and implement quantitative performance metrics and assess construct validity.

A commercial digital gaming engine (Unity3D) was used to implement the simulator with support for 3D visualization of digital ear models and support for major surgical tasks. A haptic arm co-located with the stereo scene was used to manipulate virtual surgical tools and to …

Internav3d: A Navigation Tool For Robot-Assisted Needle-Based Intervention For The Lung, Srikanth Bhattad Dec 2013

Internav3d: A Navigation Tool For Robot-Assisted Needle-Based Intervention For The Lung, Srikanth Bhattad

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Lung cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer deaths in North America. There are recent advances in cancer treatment techniques that can treat cancerous tumors, but require a real-time imaging modality to provide intraoperative assistive feedback. Ultrasound (US) imaging is one such modality. However, while its application to the lungs has been limited because of the deterioration of US image quality (due to the presence of air in the lungs); recent work has shown that appropriate lung deflation can help to improve the quality sufficiently to enable intraoperative, US-guided robotics-assisted techniques to be used. The work described in …
