Maintaining And Controlling An Extrinsic Biofilm For Pathogen Removal In Dental Unit Water Lines, Bilal B. Al-Bataina Apr 2018

Maintaining And Controlling An Extrinsic Biofilm For Pathogen Removal In Dental Unit Water Lines, Bilal B. Al-Bataina

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The control of biofilm formation is a major concern for industrial, environmental, and public health. Undesirable biofilms can harbor different disease-causing pathogens and shorten the operational life of different equipment. On the other hand, beneficial biofilms are also used in various applications and managing its growth and activity can be desirable. Killing the biofilm does not usually incorporate the removal of the dead biofilm structure that is adhered to the surface. Therefore, the aim of this thesis is to control biofilm formation; to be able to remove, inhibit, and enhance biofilm formation. This thesis investigated the use of norspermidine, D-amino …

Effects Of Biodiesel Concentration On Microbial Deterioration Of Polyethylene In A Simulated Fuel Storage Tank, Juan Manuel Restrepo-Florez Dec 2013

Effects Of Biodiesel Concentration On Microbial Deterioration Of Polyethylene In A Simulated Fuel Storage Tank, Juan Manuel Restrepo-Florez

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

In this study a simulated fuel storage tank was used to investigate the effect of biodiesel concentration on biodegradation of polyethylene. This research is relevant in the field of fuel storage. The simulated storage system consisted of a number of identical conical flasks. Each flask was comprised of two layers, an upper one consisting of a fuel blend of diesel with biodiesel in concentrations ranging from 0 to 100% of biodiesel and the bottom layer containing an aqueous mineral media inoculated with a community obtained from a real fuel storage facility. Polyethylene slabs cut to a specific size were immersed …

Biofilm Control In A Fludized Bed Bioreactor (Fbbr) Treating Municipal Wastewater: Optimization, Modeling, And Nitrous Oxide (N2o) Emissions, Ahmed Eldyasti Apr 2013

Biofilm Control In A Fludized Bed Bioreactor (Fbbr) Treating Municipal Wastewater: Optimization, Modeling, And Nitrous Oxide (N2o) Emissions, Ahmed Eldyasti

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Among the various biological wastewater treatment processes for industrial and municipal wastewater treatment, fluidized bed bioreactors (FBBR) demonstrate numerous advantages compared to suspended growth systems such as lower hydraulic retention time, high surface area and accordingly high biomass retention time, higher volumetric conversion rates, lower sensitivity to temperature, and less sludge production. Despite the numerous biofilm bioreactor configurations and system schemes that are currently available for a wide variety of environmental applications, the development and optimization of a stable biofilm that is capable of offering effective and integrated functions, i.e. biodegradation, biomass-liquid separation, and biomass retention along with a substantial …

Engineering Nanocomposites For Antimicrobial Application, Binyu Yu Jan 2013

Engineering Nanocomposites For Antimicrobial Application, Binyu Yu

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

In this thesis, active and passive antimicrobial methods have been applied to fabricate antifouling surfaces. In the first study, we reported the synthesis and characterization of neat TiO2 and Ag-TiO2 composite nanofilms prepared on silicon wafer by sol-gel method. The synthesized Ag-TiO2 thin films showed enhanced bactericidal activities compared to the neat TiO2 nanofilm both in the dark and under UV illumination. The advantage of Ag-TiO2 nano-composites is to expand the nanomaterial’s antibacterial function to a broader range of working conditions. In the second study, we reported the synthesis, characterization and environmental application of nitrogen …
