Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference

Deep space asteroid mining presents the opportunity for the collection of critical resources required to establish a cis-lunar infrastructure. In specific, the Project Khepri team has focused on the collection of water from asteroid Bennu. This water has the potential to provide a source of clean-energy propellant as well as an essential consumable for humans or agriculture on crewed trips to the Moon or Mars. This would avoid the high costs of launching from Earth - making it a highly desirable element for the future of cis-lunar infrastructure. The OSIRIS-REx mission provided a complete survey of asteroid Bennu and is …

Open-Source And 3-D Printed Autoinjector, Anjutha Selvaraj Aug 2022

Open-Source And 3-D Printed Autoinjector, Anjutha Selvaraj

Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference

Autoinjectors have become popular modern injectable medical devices used as drug delivery systems. Due to its ease, capability and reliability compared to other conventional injectable medical devices, the market and manufacturing demand for autoinjector devices are increasing at a staggering rate. Although autoinjectors can offset healthcare treatment costs through self-administered medication, they are expensive for consumers. This paper describes the design and manufacture of a spring-driven and 3-D printed autoinjector using open-source hardware. By making it an open-source resource for everyone, the barrier of advanced research in design and production can be lifted, thus making it easily manufacturable and cost-effective. …

Examination Of Installation Effects On Multi-Jet Meter Performance, Domenic Quiquero Aug 2022

Examination Of Installation Effects On Multi-Jet Meter Performance, Domenic Quiquero

Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference

Alongside Mitchell Boody and Dr. Eric Savoury's supervision, the effect of additional internal friction of multi-jet flow meters caused by various orientations was experimentally analyzed. Multi-jet flow meters are commonly used in multi-unit residential buildings, thus by understanding the effects of the corresponding orientational loss, our industry partners can better assess water cost. This study coincides with Mitchell Boody's work using simulations to demonstrate the impact of frictional loss in multi-jet flow meters and building upon the work of Paulo Barros Rodrigues with other orientations.

Normative Joint Angles And Compensation During Fit-Hansa Test, Jennifer J. Villeneuve Aug 2022

Normative Joint Angles And Compensation During Fit-Hansa Test, Jennifer J. Villeneuve

Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference

Imagine a world where no injuries occurred, muscular compensation was able to be detected early on and imbalances resolved before any risks appear. Muscular compensation can cause injuries, especially with repetitive motion or through activities of daily living. The study I conducted focuses on the compensation methods of shoulder abduction and trunk lean during the FIT-HaNSA series. Determining the normative ranges of motion can increase early detection of fatigue for all individuals. This can help make repetitive jobs such as working in a factory much safer for all employees, as they can switch tasks as soon as fatigue is identified. …

A Qualitative Look Into Repair Practices, Jumana Labib Aug 2022

A Qualitative Look Into Repair Practices, Jumana Labib

Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference

This research poster is based on a working research paper which moves beyond the traditional scope of repair and examines the Right to Repair movement from a smaller, more personal lens by detailing the 6 categorical impediments as dubbed by Dr. Alissa Centivany (design, law, economic/business strategy, material asymmetry, informational asymmetry, and social impediments) have continuously inhibited repair and affected repair practices, which has consequently had larger implications (environmental, economic, social, etc.) on ourselves, our objects, and our world. The poster builds upon my research from last year (see "The Right to Repair: (Re)building a better future"), this time pulling …

Video-Based Non-Contact Vibration Measurement Software, Mithila Sothynathan, Samuel Asokanthan Aug 2022

Video-Based Non-Contact Vibration Measurement Software, Mithila Sothynathan, Samuel Asokanthan

Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference

This study aims to develop a cost-effective, accessible, and contactless means of measuring vibrations.

Mathematical Analysis Of A Hemispherical Resonator Gyroscope, Sean Mcevoy Aug 2022

Mathematical Analysis Of A Hemispherical Resonator Gyroscope, Sean Mcevoy

Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference

A Hemispherical Resonator Gyroscope (HRG) is a gyroscope that uses vibrations to measure the orientation of a device based on the Coriolis effect. A mathematical model was confirmed so that a mathematical simulation could be made and used for a simulation of the HRG in operation.

Development Of A Shoulder Implant Testing System To Evaluate Implant Fixation, Allen Sun Aug 2021

Development Of A Shoulder Implant Testing System To Evaluate Implant Fixation, Allen Sun

Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference

This poster outlines the initial methodology and testing related to the development of an optical measurement system used to quantify shoulder implant micromotion in the laboratory.
