Machine Learning Classifiers For Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Assessment Using Lung Ct Data., Halimah Alsurayhi

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a condition characterized by persistent inflammation and airflow blockages in the lungs, contributing to a significant number of deaths globally each year. To guide tailored treatment strategies and mitigate future risks, the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) employs a multifaceted assessment system of COPD severity, considering patient's lung function, symptoms, and exacerbation history. COPD staging systems, such as the high-resolution eight-stage COPD system and the GOLD 2023 three staging systems, have been later developed based on these factors. Lung Computed Tomography (CT) is becoming increasingly crucial in investigating COPD as it …

Towards Patient Specific Mitral Valve Modelling Via Dynamic 3d Transesophageal Echocardiography, Patrick Carnahan

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Mitral valve disease is a common pathologic problem occurring increasingly in an aging population, and many patients suffering from mitral valve disease require surgical intervention. Planning an interventional approach from diagnostic imaging alone remains a significant clinical challenge. Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) is the primary imaging modality used diagnostically, it has limitations in image quality and field-of-view. Recently, developments have been made towards modelling patient-specific deformable mitral valves from TEE imaging, however, a major barrier to producing accurate valve models is the need to derive the leaflet geometry through segmentation of diagnostic TEE imaging. This work explores the development of volume …

Toward Building An Intelligent And Secure Network: An Internet Traffic Forecasting Perspective, Sajal Saha

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Internet traffic forecast is a crucial component for the proactive management of self-organizing networks (SON) to ensure better Quality of Service (QoS) and Quality of Experience (QoE). Given the volatile and random nature of traffic data, this forecasting influences strategic development and investment decisions in the Internet Service Provider (ISP) industry. Modern machine learning algorithms have shown potential in dealing with complex Internet traffic prediction tasks, yet challenges persist. This thesis systematically explores these issues over five empirical studies conducted in the past three years, focusing on four key research questions: How do outlier data samples impact prediction accuracy for …

Classification Of Ddos Attack With Machine Learning Architectures And Exploratory Analysis, Amreen Anbar

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The ever-increasing frequency of occurrence and sophistication of DDoS attacks pose a serious threat to network security. Accurate classification of DDoS attacks with efficiency is crucial in order to develop effective defense mechanisms. In this thesis, we propose a novel approach for DDoS classification using the CatBoost algorithm, on CICDDoS2019, a benchmark dataset containing 12 variations of DDoS attacks and legitimate traffic using real-world traffic traces. With a developed ensemble feature selection method and feature engineering, our model proves to be a good fit for DDoS attack type prediction. Our experimental results demonstrate that our proposed approach achieves high classification …

Deep Learning For Load Forecasting With Smart Meter Data: Online And Federated Learning, Mohammad Navid Fekri Apr 2022

Deep Learning For Load Forecasting With Smart Meter Data: Online And Federated Learning, Mohammad Navid Fekri

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Electricity load forecasting has been attracting increasing attention because of its importance for energy management, infrastructure planning, and budgeting. In recent years, the proliferation of smart meters has created new opportunities for forecasting on the building and even individual household levels. Machine learning (ML) has achieved great successes in this domain; however, conventional ML techniques require data transfer to a centralized location for model training, therefore, increasing network traffic and exposing data to privacy and security risks. Also, traditional approaches employ offline learning, which means that they are only trained once and miss out on the possibility to learn from …

The Role Of Transient Vibration Of The Skull On Concussion, Rodrigo Dalvit Carvalho Da Silva Mar 2022

The Role Of Transient Vibration Of The Skull On Concussion, Rodrigo Dalvit Carvalho Da Silva

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Concussion is a traumatic brain injury usually caused by a direct or indirect blow to the head that affects brain function. The maximum mechanical impedance of the brain tissue occurs at 450±50 Hz and may be affected by the skull resonant frequencies. After an impact to the head, vibration resonance of the skull damages the underlying cortex. The skull deforms and vibrates, like a bell for 3 to 5 milliseconds, bruising the cortex. Furthermore, the deceleration forces the frontal and temporal cortex against the skull, eliminating a layer of cerebrospinal fluid. When the skull vibrates, the force spreads directly to …

Deep Learning For High-Impedance Fault Detection And Classification, Khushwant Rai Aug 2021

Deep Learning For High-Impedance Fault Detection And Classification, Khushwant Rai

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

High-Impedance Faults (HIFs) are a hazard to public safety but are difficult to detect because of their low current amplitude and diverse characteristics. Supervised machine learning techniques have shown great success in HIF detection; however, these approaches rely on resource-intensive signal processing techniques and fail in presence of non-HIF disturbances and even for scenarios not included in training data. This thesis leverages unsupervised learning and proposes a Convolutional Autoencoder framework for HIF Detection (CAE-HIFD). In CAE-HIFD, Convolutional Autoencoder learns only from HIF signals by employing cross-correlation; consequently, eliminating the need for diverse non-HIF scenarios in training. Furthermore, this thesis proposes …

Towards Multiclass Damage Detection And Localization Using Limited Vibration Measurements, Sandeep Sony Feb 2021

Towards Multiclass Damage Detection And Localization Using Limited Vibration Measurements, Sandeep Sony

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Traditional vibration-based damage detection methods provide structural health information based on their measured data (i.e., acceleration and displacement response). Over the last few decades, various model-based and time-frequency methods have shown great promises for damage identification and localization. However, the existing methods are unable to perform satisfactorily in many situations, including the presence of limited sensor measurements and training data, detection of minor and progressive damage, and identification of multiclass damage, creating constraints to make them free of user-intervention and implemented using the modern sensors. The main objective of this thesis is to develop algorithms capable of damage identification and …

Edge-Cloud Iot Data Analytics: Intelligence At The Edge With Deep Learning, Ananda Mohon M. Ghosh May 2020

Edge-Cloud Iot Data Analytics: Intelligence At The Edge With Deep Learning, Ananda Mohon M. Ghosh

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Rapid growth in numbers of connected devices, including sensors, mobile, wearable, and other Internet of Things (IoT) devices, is creating an explosion of data that are moving across the network. To carry out machine learning (ML), IoT data are typically transferred to the cloud or another centralized system for storage and processing; however, this causes latencies and increases network traffic. Edge computing has the potential to remedy those issues by moving computation closer to the network edge and data sources. On the other hand, edge computing is limited in terms of computational power and thus is not well suited for …

Mastoidectomy is a challenging surgical procedure that is difficult to perform and practice. As supplementation to current training techniques, surgical simulators have been developed with the ability to visualize and operate on temporal bone anatomy. Medical image segmentation is done to create three-dimensional models of anatomical structures for simulation. Manual segmentation is an accurate but time-consuming process that requires an expert to label each structure on images. An automatic method for segmentation would allow for more practical model creation. The objective of this work was to create an automated segmentation algorithm for structures of the temporal bone relevant to mastoidectomy. …
