Liquid Phase Nano Metal Catalyzed Dechlorination Of Chlorinated Organic Compounds, Omneya El-Sharnouby

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

1,2-Dichloroethane (1,2-DCA) is among the most prevalent groundwater chlorinated organic compounds (COCs) found at hazardous sites throughout the world. Given its pervasive contamination and adverse health effects, there is considerable interest in developing novel remediation technologies for successfully treating 1,2-DCA along with other COCs from water sources. Chemical reduction by nano zero valent iron (monometallic (nZVI) or bimetallic (Pd-nZVI)) has proven to be a successful field applicable technology, yet it has failed in degrading such a recalcitrant compound as 1,2-DCA.

In this study, the development of a field applicable nano metal based technology capable of degrading 1,2-DCA was carried out. …

Study Of Mobile Robot Operations Related To Lunar Exploration, Matthew Cross Dec 2016

Study Of Mobile Robot Operations Related To Lunar Exploration, Matthew Cross

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Mobile robots extend the reach of exploration in environments unsuitable, or unreachable, by humans. Far-reaching environments, such as the south lunar pole, exhibit lighting conditions that are challenging for optical imagery required for mobile robot navigation. Terrain conditions also impact the operation of mobile robots; distinguishing terrain types prior to physical contact can improve hazard avoidance.

This thesis presents the conclusions of a trade-off that uses the results from two studies related to operating mobile robots at the lunar south pole. The lunar south pole presents engineering design challenges for both tele-operation and lidar-based autonomous navigation in the context of …

Analysis Of 3d Cone-Beam Ct Image Reconstruction Performance On A Fpga, Devin Held Dec 2016

Analysis Of 3d Cone-Beam Ct Image Reconstruction Performance On A Fpga, Devin Held

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Efficient and accurate tomographic image reconstruction has been an intensive topic of research due to the increasing everyday usage in areas such as radiology, biology, and materials science. Computed tomography (CT) scans are used to analyze internal structures through capture of x-ray images. Cone-beam CT scans project a cone-shaped x-ray to capture 2D image data from a single focal point, rotating around the object. CT scans are prone to multiple artifacts, including motion blur, streaks, and pixel irregularities, therefore must be run through image reconstruction software to reduce visual artifacts. The most common algorithm used is the Feldkamp, Davis, and …

In Mold Flow Of Long Fibers In Compression Molding Process, Gleb Meirson Dec 2016

In Mold Flow Of Long Fibers In Compression Molding Process, Gleb Meirson

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Long Fiber Thermoplastics (LFT) are promising new materials with high physical properties and low density. These high properties are obtained by embedding very long fibers (~100 mm) into a thermoplastic matrix. Such a high fiber length dictates the use of a compression molding process for manufacturing as the length of discontinuous fibers in injection molding is limited by pellet length.

LFT composites are of great interest for the automotive industry. These materials are already used in some interior and exterior car parts such as bumpers, seat structures, door module etc. This research is inspired by the desire to manufacture load …

Investigation Of Grouted Dowel Connection For Precast Concrete Wall Construction, Douglas J. Provost-Smith Dec 2016

Investigation Of Grouted Dowel Connection For Precast Concrete Wall Construction, Douglas J. Provost-Smith

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The grouted dowel connection is a simple and cost-effective connection used in many precast concrete structural systems. The required dowel length is currently designed as a regular bar in reinforced concrete, which underestimates the bond strength, thus resulting in excessive connection lengths. Furthermore, precast wall construction continues throughout cold weather, where in-situ heating of the grout used in the grouted dowel connections is usually conducted for short periods of time. Hence, early-age exposure to subfreezing conditions may affect the quality of the grout and subsequently the bond strength of the connection, which can compromise structural integrity.

In this thesis, full-scale …

Modelling And Analysis Of Smart Grids For Critical Data Communication, Abdulfattah Noorwali Dec 2016

Modelling And Analysis Of Smart Grids For Critical Data Communication, Abdulfattah Noorwali

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Practical models for the subnetworks of smart grid are presented and analyzed. Critical packet-delay bounds for these subnetworks are determined, with the overall objective of identifying parameters that would help in the design of smart grid with least end-to-end delay.

A single-server non-preemptive queueing model with prioritized critical packets is presented for Home Area Network (HAN). Closed-form expressions for critical packet delay are derived and illustrated as a function of: i) critical packet arrival rate, ii) service rate, iii) utilization factor, and iv) rate of arrival of non-critical packets. Next, wireless HANs using FDMA and TDMA are presented. Upper and …

The Efficacy Of Bionate As An Articulating Surface For Joint Hemiarthroplasty, Sarah Dedecker Dec 2016

The Efficacy Of Bionate As An Articulating Surface For Joint Hemiarthroplasty, Sarah Dedecker

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Hemiarthroplasty procedures replace the diseased side of the joint with an implant to maximize bone preservation while maintaining more native anatomy than a total joint replacement. Even though hemiarthroplasty procedures have been clinically successful, they cause progressive cartilage damage over time due to the use of relatively stiff metallic implant materials. This work investigates the role of low moduli implant material on implant-cartilage contact mechanics and early in vitro cartilage wear. A finite element simulation was developed to assess the effect of low moduli implants in the range of 0.015-0.288 GPa on contact mechanics. Higher contact area and lower peak …

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Motivation: Current statistics show that the population of seniors and the incidence rate of age-related neuromuscular disorders are rapidly increasing worldwide. Improving medical care is likely to increase the survival rate but will result in even more patients in need of Assistive, Rehabilitation and Assessment (ARA) services for extended periods which will place a significant burden on the world's healthcare systems. In many cases, the only alternative is limited and often delayed outpatient therapy. The situation will be worse for patients in remote areas. One potential solution is to develop technologies that provide efficient and safe means of in-hospital and …

Combined Analysis Of Tide- And Wave-Induced Water Table Fluctuations For Structural Characterization Of A Coastal Aquifer, Victoria A. Trglavcnik

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Understanding of coastal hydrogeology is essential for the assessment, management, and protection of coastal groundwater resources. Coastal groundwater is often an important source of drinking water for coastal communities but can be contaminated by saltwater or human-derived contaminants. The groundwater table in coastal aquifers fluctuates in response to various oceanic pressure forces acting at the shoreline, including tides, individual waves, and offshore storms. Measurements of water table fluctuations in response to tides and waves can be used to characterize coastal aquifers and provide important insight into the hydraulic properties and structure, including the connectivity between the aquifer and ocean. Most …

The Role Of Scapular Morphology In Reverse Shoulder Arthroplasty, Ashish Gupta Dec 2016

The Role Of Scapular Morphology In Reverse Shoulder Arthroplasty, Ashish Gupta

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Baseplate fixation in a reverse shoulder arthroplasty depends on adequate bone stock. In cases of severe glenoid bone loss and revision shoulder arthroplasty, deficiency of the glenoid vault compels the surgeon to attain screw fixation in the three columns of the scapula. The relationship of these columns demonstrated that the coracoid is closer to the lateral scapular pillar in females than in males. Significant gender dimorphism exists between the orientations of the three columns. The gender dimorphism is further evaluated by anthropometric measurements of the scapular body and the glenoid. The clinical significance lies in the ability to reconstruct the …

Improved Localization Algorithms In Indoor Wireless Environment, Fei Long Nov 2016

Improved Localization Algorithms In Indoor Wireless Environment, Fei Long

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Localization has been considered as an important precondition for the location-dependent applications such as mobile tracking and navigation. To obtain specific location information, we usually make use of Global Positioning System(GPS), which is the most common plat- form to acquire localization information in outdoor environments. When targets are in indoor environment, however, the GPS signal is usually blocked, so we also consider other assisted positioning techniques in order to obtain accurate position of targets. In this thesis, three different schemes in indoor environment are proposed to minimize localization error by placing refer- ence nodes in optimum locations, combining the localization information …

Performance Factors In Neurosurgical Simulation And Augmented Reality Image Guidance, Ryan Armstrong

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Virtual reality surgical simulators have seen widespread adoption in an effort to provide safe, cost-effective and realistic practice of surgical skills. However, the majority of these simulators focus on training low-level technical skills, providing only prototypical surgical cases. For many complex procedures, this approach is deficient in representing anatomical variations that present clinically, failing to challenge users’ higher-level cognitive skills important for navigation and targeting. Surgical simulators offer the means to not only simulate any case conceivable, but to test novel approaches and examine factors that influence performance. Unfortunately, there is a void in the literature surrounding these questions. This …

Co-Substrate Fermentation Of Jerusalem Artichoke Tubers And Crude Glycerol To Butanol With Integrated Product Recovery, Tahereh Sarchami

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Butanol has long been considered a potential advanced liquid biofuel, in addition to its current application as an industrial solvent. It can be produced biologically; however, the conventional ABE fermentation suffers from many limitations, including low butanol titer, high cost of traditional raw materials, end-product inhibition and high butanol recovery costs. Possible solutions are the use of renewable low-cost feedstocks, genetic manipulations of Clostridia spp. to improve the strains’ butanol titer and tolerance, advanced fermentation techniques, and in-situ product recovery technologies.

In order to overcome some of these limitations, the overall goal of this thesis was to develop a process …

Channel Form And Processes In A Formerly Glaciated Terrain, Nathaniel Bergman Nov 2016

Channel Form And Processes In A Formerly Glaciated Terrain, Nathaniel Bergman

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Despite that many places around the world in general, and North America in particular, were glaciated during the last ice age, relatively little is known about rivers that evolved over these landscapes once they deglaciated. These rivers are commonly categorized as alluvial with a glacial legacy, and often described as plain gravel-bed or sand-bed rivers. Alternatively, they are considered to be bedrock rivers when the glacial deposits were eroded and underlying rock was exposed. However, ignoring the glacial history of these rivers is scientifically wrong and they should be termed "semi-alluvial". This work shows that classification is important, not only …

Behavior Of Fire-Exposed Rc Frames Before And After Jacketing, M. Monir M. Ajan Alhadid Oct 2016

Behavior Of Fire-Exposed Rc Frames Before And After Jacketing, M. Monir M. Ajan Alhadid

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Analysis and design of fire-exposed Reinforced Concrete (RC) frames before and after jacketing with concrete layers are commonly performed using prescriptive methods that rely on the concept of fire rating. These methods were developed based on empirical results on individual RC members subjected to certain fire conditions. In typical fire scenarios, the residual capacity, stiffness and thermal deformations affects not only the local performance of each fire-exposed member, but also the load redistribution and global behavior of the entire frame. In terms of fire safety, the philosophy of the new building codes considers objective-based design as an alternative of the …

Both the polymer solution concentration and mandrel rotation speed were optimized to fabricate bead-free fibres. Cytocompatibility and proliferation studies using mesenchymal progenitor 10T1/2 cells showed PEA fibres were not cytotoxic …

Automatic Fracture Orientation Extraction From Sfm Point Clouds, Jon Kissi Oct 2016

Automatic Fracture Orientation Extraction From Sfm Point Clouds, Jon Kissi

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Geology seeks to understand the history of the Earth and its surface processes through charac- terisation of surface formations and rock units. Chief among the geologists’ tools are rock unit orientation measurements, such as Strike, Dip and Dip Direction. These allow an understanding of both surface and sub-structure on both the local and macro scale.

Although the way these techniques can be used to characterise geology are well understood, the need to collect these measurements by hand adds time and expense to the work of the geologist, precludes spontaneity in field work, and coverage is limited to where the geologist …

Neurosurgical Ultrasound Pose Estimation Using Image-Based Registration And Sensor Fusion - A Feasibility Study, Utsav Pardasani

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Modern neurosurgical procedures often rely on computer-assisted real-time guidance using multiple medical imaging modalities. State-of-the-art commercial products enable the fusion of pre-operative with intra-operative images (e.g., magnetic resonance [MR] with ultrasound [US] images), as well as the on-screen visualization of procedures in progress. In so doing, US images can be employed as a template to which pre-operative images can be registered, to correct for anatomical changes, to provide live-image feedback, and consequently to improve confidence when making resection margin decisions near eloquent regions during tumour surgery.

In spite of the potential for tracked ultrasound to improve many neurosurgical procedures, it …
