A novel experimental method was developed through a ball-on-disk tribometer to study the friction and wear behaviour of a chrome steel at temperatures of 25, 200 and 500 °C. Water-based nanolubricants containing different concentrations of nano-TiO2 from 0.4 to 8.0 wt% were used to investigate their effects on friction-reduction and anti-wear mechanisms, in comparison to the benchmarks under dry and water conditions. The results show that the water-based nanolubricants can significantly reduce coefficient of friction (COF) and improve wear resistance of the chrome steel at both ambient and elevated temperatures. This article demonstrates in vitro a synergistic effect on 9L gliosarcoma cells when exposed to bromodeoxyuridine (BrUdR) and a low concentration (100 times lower than the IC50) of 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU), in combination with x-ray irradiation. The synergy is brought about by several important factors including the x-ray beam energy, atomic number of the BrUdR (Z = 35), effectiveness of 5-FU in reducing the available repair processes and distribution of the BrUdR in and around the 9L cells (32% of the total substitution of BrUdR for thymidine into nucleus DNA). Thermo-mechanical processing of a strip cast dual phase (DP) steel was carried out using a Gleeble thermo-mechanical simulator. The effect of deformation temperatures in the range from 1050 to 700 °C on the microstructure evolution was investigated using optical, scanning and transmission electron microscopy along with electron backscattering diffraction (EBSD). Strain-induced ferrite (SIF) formation was observed following austenite deformation (∼0.41 reduction) in the 800–700 °C temperature range, leading to a ferrite grain refinement down to 3.1 ± 2.3 μm. Radiation therapy is rapidly evolving toward the delivery of higher dose rates to improve cancer treatment. In vitro experiments were performed to investigate the response of 9L and MCF-7 cancer cell lines, exposed to 10 MV X-ray radiations. Up to 8 Gy was delivered at a dose-rate of 50 cGy/min compared to 5 Gy/min. The data obtained emphasizes the importance of taking into account not only the physical, but also the radiobiological parameters, when planning a particular cancer treatment.

In the strengthening of existing deficient structures using the near-surface mounted (NSM) FRP method, a group of parallel NSM FRP strips are usually needed to meet the capacity enhancement requirement. When the groove spacing (i.e., the net distance between grooves) is relatively small, the bond behaviour of each NSM FRP strip is detrimentally influenced by the adjacent grooves/FRP strips, and such detrimental effect should be taken into account for a safe design of the NSM FRP strengthening system. The effect of the mineral matter on the reactivity of a coke analogue was examined through the addition of binary and ternary combinations of magnetite (Fe3O4), troilite (FeS) and quartz (SiO2). The use of coke at a laboratory scale has issues arising from it heterogeneity and complex nature. The coke analogue was developed to help alleviate these issues, being a laboratory tool that has a simplified carbon structure and in which the mineral content, particle size and distribution is largely controlled.
