Gene Network Analysis And Design, Matthew J. Berryman, Andrew Allison, Derek Abbott Jan 2005

Gene Network Analysis And Design, Matthew J. Berryman, Andrew Allison, Derek Abbott

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

Gene networks are composed of many different interacting genes and gene products (RNAs and proteins). They can be thought of as switching regions in n-dimensional space or as mass-balanced signaling networks. Both approaches allow for describing gene networks with the limited quantitative or even qualitative data available. We show how these approaches can be used in modeling the apoptosis gene network that has a vital role in tumor development. The open question is whether engineering changes to this network could be used as a possible cancer treatment.

Analysis And Modelling Of Trust In Distributed Information Systems, Weiliang Zhao, Vijay Varadharajan, George Bryan Jan 2005

Analysis And Modelling Of Trust In Distributed Information Systems, Weiliang Zhao, Vijay Varadharajan, George Bryan

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

In this paper, we consider the analysis and modelling of trust in distributed information systems. We review the relations of trust relationships in our previous work.We discuss trust layers and hierarchy based on formal definition of trust relationship. We provide a set of definitions to describe the properties of trust direction and trust symmetry under our taxonomy framework. In order to analyze and model the scope and diversity of trust relationship, we define trust scope label under our taxonomy framework. We provide some example scenarios to illustrate the proposed definitions about properties of trust relationship. The proposed definitions are new elements of the taxonomy …

Analysis Of Oxidation And Surface Characteristics In Hot Strip Rolling, Zhengyi Jiang, Weihua Sun, Jianning Tang, Dongbin Wei, A K. Tieu Jan 2005

Analysis Of Oxidation And Surface Characteristics In Hot Strip Rolling, Zhengyi Jiang, Weihua Sun, Jianning Tang, Dongbin Wei, A K. Tieu

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

Deformation characteristics of the oxide scale in hot strip mill have not been quantified before and the principle of the effect of oxide scale deformation in the roll bite on strip surface roughness has not yet been revealed. In this paper, analysis of the thin secondary oxide scale formed in hot metal rolling and its surface roughness micro deformation is carried out by experiments and finite element analysis. Simulation results are compared with the measured values, which show that they are in close agreement. Surface roughness transfer during hot metal rolling is also discussed.

Work-Per-Cycle Analysis For Electromechanical Actuators, Geoffrey M. Spinks, Van T. Truong Jan 2005

Work-Per-Cycle Analysis For Electromechanical Actuators, Geoffrey M. Spinks, Van T. Truong

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

Work-per-cycle calculations have been demonstrated for two modes of actuation behaviour: (1) working against a dead weight (isotonic actuation) and (2) working against a restoring spring. Importantly, the influence of the electrical stimulus on the elastic modulus of the actuator material has been included in the analysis. The change in elastic modulus is shown to significantly influence the actuator strain and work-per-cycle. The maximum work-per-cycle for each case has been calculated. Comparison of different materials has been made on the basis of our theoretical prediction and other published models. Work-per-cycle is shown to be significantly affected by the mode of …

Bayesian Analysis For Penalized Spline Regression Using Winbugs, Ciprian Crainiceanu, David Ruppert, M. P. Wand Jan 2005

Bayesian Analysis For Penalized Spline Regression Using Winbugs, Ciprian Crainiceanu, David Ruppert, M. P. Wand

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Penalized splines can be viewed as BLUPs in a mixed model framework, which allows the use of mixed model software for smoothing. Thus, software originally developed for Bayesian analysis of mixed models can be used for penalized spline regression. Bayesian inference for nonparametric models enjoys the flexibility of nonparametric models and the exact inference provided by the Bayesian inferential machinery. This paper provides a simple, yet comprehensive, set of programs for the implementation of nonparametric Bayesian analysis in WinBUGS. Good mixing properties of the MCMC chains are obtained by using low-rank thin-plate splines, while simulation times per iteration are reduced …

Fem Analysis Of The Head Bending In Narrow Strip Hot Rolling, Limei Yang, Zhengyi Jiang, A. K. Tieu Jan 2005

Fem Analysis Of The Head Bending In Narrow Strip Hot Rolling, Limei Yang, Zhengyi Jiang, A. K. Tieu

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

Head bending is a problem in narrow strip hot rolling, which causes a difficulty for strip to enter the next rolling pass of the tandem mills and affects the quality of products. A 2D FEM coupled thermal-stress analysis was employed to simulate the rolling process. The effects of the temperature difference, friction coefficient, reduction and the rolling speed on the head bending are discussed in the paper. Simulation results are in agreement with the measured values.

3d Finite Element Analysis Of Surface Roughness And Friction In Hot Strip Rolling, Zhengyi Jiang, A. K. Tieu Jan 2005

3d Finite Element Analysis Of Surface Roughness And Friction In Hot Strip Rolling, Zhengyi Jiang, A. K. Tieu

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

Surface roughness of oxide scale and strip in hot strip rolling has a significant influence on the friction and lubrication conditions. In this paper, the authors present the measured surface roughness of oxide scale and strip by Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) and Surface Profilometer respectively for hot rolled strip on a Hille 100 experimental rolling mill. Based on the friction coefficient determined through a sensor roll on the rolling mill, a 3D rigid visco-plastic finite element simulation was carried out, and the relationship between the surface roughness and friction coefficient was investigated. Results show that the lubrication in hot strip …
