Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Pt-Gd alloy polycrystalline thin film is deposited on 3D nickel foam by pulsed laser deposition method serving as a whole binder/carbon-free air electrode, showing great catalytic activity enhancement as an efficient bifunctional catalyst for the oxygen reduction and evolution reactions in lithium oxygen batteries. The porous structure can facilitate rapid O2 and electrolyte diffusion, as well as forming a continuous conductive network throughout the whole energy conversion process. It shows a favorable cycle performance in the full discharge/charge model, owing to the high catalytic activity of the Pt-Gd alloy composite and 3D porous nickel foam structure. Specially, excellent cycling performance …

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Graphene scroll is an emerging 1D tubular form of graphitic carbon that has potential applications in electrochemical energy storage. However, it still remains a challenge to composite graphene scrolls with other nanomaterials for building advanced electrode configuration with fast and durable lithium storage properties. Here, a transition-metal-oxide-based hierarchically ordered 3D porous electrode is designed based on assembling 1D core-sheath MnO@N-doped graphene scrolls with 2D N-doped graphene ribbons. In the resulting architecture, porous MnO nanowires confined in tubular graphene scrolls are mechanically isolated but electronically wellconnected, while the interwoven graphene ribbons offer continuous conductive paths for electron transfer in all directions. …

3d Face Recognition Using Anthropometric And Curvelet Features Fusion, Dan Song, Jing Luo, Chunyuan Zi, Huixin Tian Jan 2016

3d Face Recognition Using Anthropometric And Curvelet Features Fusion, Dan Song, Jing Luo, Chunyuan Zi, Huixin Tian

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Curvelet transform can describe the signal by multiple scales, and multiple directions. In order to improve the performance of 3D face recognition algorithm, we proposed an Anthropometric and Curvelet features fusion-based algorithm for 3D face recognition (Anthropometric Curvelet Fusion Face Recognition, ACFFR). First, the eyes, nose, and mouth feature regions are extracted by the Anthropometric characteristics and curvature features of the human face. Second, Curvelet energy features of the facial feature regions at different scales and different directions are extracted by Curvelet transform. At last, Euclidean distance is used as the similarity between template and objectives. To verify the performance, …

Addressing Misconceptions About Engineering Through Student-Industry Interaction In A Video-Augmented 3d Immersive Virtual World, Sasha Nikolic, Thomas Goldfinch, Mark Jian Wei Lee, Christian H. Ritz

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A key goal of engineering education is to ensure students are adequately prepared to enter professional practice. Unfortunately, students have been found to bring to university significant misconceptions about the types of work engineers perform, which can have an adverse impact on their readiness to fully appreciate and benefit from course activities. This paper presents a case study of how iSee, a collaborative online platform that allows for video conferencing within a three-dimensional immersive virtual world, was used to host a careers fair event in which students learned about the engineering profession and about the various engineering majors available to …

Enhanced Simultaneous Detection Of Ractopamine And Salbutamol - Via Electrochemical-Facial Deposition Of Mno2 Nanoflowers Onto 3d Rgo/Ni Foam Templates, Mingyan Wang, Wei Zhu, Lin Ma, Juan Juan Ma, Dongen Zhang, Zhi Wei Tong, Jun Chen

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

In this paper, we report a facile method to successfully fabricate MnO2 nanoflowers loaded onto 3D RGO@nickel foam, showing enhanced biosensing activity due to the improved structural integration of different electrode materials components. When the as-prepared 3D hybrid electrodes were investigated as a binder-free biosensor, two well-defined and separate differential pulse voltammetric peaks for ractopamine (RAC) and salbutamol (SAL) were observed, indicating the simultaneous selective detection of both β-agonists possible. The MnO2/RGO@NF sensor also demonstrated a linear relationship over a wide concentration range of 17nM to 962nM (R=0.9997) for RAC and 42nM to 1463nM (R=0.9996) for SAL, with the detection …

Self-Assembled 3d Foam-Like Nico2o4 As Efficient Catalyst For Lithium Oxygen Batteries, Lili Liu, Jun Wang, Yuyang Hou, Jun Chen, Hua-Kun Liu, Jiazhao Wang, Yu-Ping Wu

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

A self-assembled 3D foam-like NiCo2O4 catalyst has been synthesized via a simple and environmental friendly approach, wherein starch acts as the template to form the unique 3D architecture. Interestingly, when employed as a cathode for lithium oxygen batteries, it demonstrates superior bifunctional electrocatalytic activities toward both the oxygen reduction reaction and the oxygen evolution reaction, with a relatively high round-trip efficiency of 70% and high discharge capacity of 10 137 mAh g-1 at a current density of 200 mA g-1, which is much higher than those in previously reported results. Meanwhile, rotating disk electrode measurements in both aqueous and nonaqueous …

3d Binder-Free Mose2 Nanosheets/Carbon Cloth Electrodes For Efficient And Stable Hydrogen Evolution Prepared By Simple Electrophoresis Deposition Strategy, Yundan Liu, Long Ren, Zhen Zhang, Xiang Qi, Hongxing Li, Jianxin Zhong

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

We successfully developed a simple electrophoretic deposition (EPD) method to decorate the MoSe2 nanosheets on the carbon fiber surface of carbon cloth (MoSe2/CC). With this process, MoSe2 nanosheets can be uniformly and tightly deposited on this flexible conductor to form a 3D binder-free electrode for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The film thickness can also be controlled by the EPD time. Directly used as binder-free electrodes for hydrogen evolution reaction, the as-prepared 3D MoSe2/CC samples exhibit excellent catalytic activity in an acidic electrolyte (21 mA/cm2 at an over-potential of 250 mV). Variation of MoSe2 nanosheets film thickness in the electrodes could …

3d Printed Flexure Hinges For Soft Monolithic Prosthetic Fingers, Rahim Mutlu, Gursel Alici, Marc In Het Panhuis, Geoffrey M. Spinks

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Mechanical compliance is one of the primary properties of structures in nature playing a key role in their efficiency. This study investigates a number of commonly used flexure hinges to determine a flexure hinge morphology, which generates large displacements under a lowest possible force input. The aim of this is to design a soft and monolithic robotic finger. Fused deposition modeling, a low-cost 3D printing technique, was used to fabricate the flexure hinges and the soft monolithic robotic fingers. Experimental and finite element analyses suggest that a nonsymmetric elliptical flexure hinge is the most suitable type for use in the …
