Removal Of Micropollutants By Membrane Bioreactor Under Temperature Variation, Faisal I. Hai, Karin Tessmer, Luong N. Nguyen, Jinguo Kang, William E. Price, Long Nghiem

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

The effects of controlled temperature variation in the range of 10–45 °C were assessed in a lab-scale MBR that treated synthetic municipal wastewater spiked with selected micropollutants. The effects were evaluated with respect to total organic carbon (TOC) and total nitrogen (TN) removal, micropollutant removal, sludge growth, level of soluble microbial products (SMPs) in the mixed liquor and membrane fouling. Overall, the temperature shifts caused high variation in the TOC and TN levels in the reactor supernatant, however that in membrane-permeate was relatively more stable, substantiating the robustness of the MBR process. Results regarding the removal of micropollutants at ambient …

Investigating The Effects Of Pounding For Inelastic Base Isolated Adjacent Buildings Under Earthquake Excitations, Mehmet Uz, Muhammad N. S Hadi Jan 2011

Investigating The Effects Of Pounding For Inelastic Base Isolated Adjacent Buildings Under Earthquake Excitations, Mehmet Uz, Muhammad N. S Hadi

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

In this study, an investigation is carried out to analyse the earthquake induced pounding be-tween two insufficiently separated base isolated buildings considering the inelastic behaviour of the struc-tures’ response. The buildings are modelled as a four-story and a three-story system to simulate the structural behaviour. The resulting systems of second order constant coefficient equations are reformulated as a system of first order ordinary differential equations and solved using the ordinary differential equation solver of MATLAB. Numerical study revealed that pounding behaviour of the buildings has considerable influence on the behaviour of the lighter building causing substantial amplification of the response …

The Behaviour Of Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer Confined Concrete Cylinders Under High Temperature Exposure, Butje Alfonsius Louk Fanggi, Muhammad N. S Hadi

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

This study investigates the effect of temperature on the behaviour of concrete cylinders wrapped with Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer (CFRP). The study used nine concrete cylinders in three groups; the first group was exposed to room temperature of approximately 20ºC, the second group was exposed to a cyclic temperature with a temperature range of 20ºC to 70ºC, and the third group was exposed to a prolonged temperature of 70ºC. All cylinders were then tested to failure. The study indicated that ultimate strength of cylinders wrapped with one and two layers of CFRP are significantly unchanged after being exposed to 20ºC …

Removal Of Carbamazepine And Sulfamethoxazole By Mbr Under Anoxic And Aerobic Conditions, Faisal I. Hai, Xueqing Li, William E. Price, Long Nghiem Jan 2011

Removal Of Carbamazepine And Sulfamethoxazole By Mbr Under Anoxic And Aerobic Conditions, Faisal I. Hai, Xueqing Li, William E. Price, Long Nghiem

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

This study reveals for the first time that near-anoxic conditions (dissolved oxygen, DO - 0.5 mg/L) can be a favorable operating regime for the removal of the persistent micropollutant carbamazepine by MBR treatment. The removal efficiencies of carbamazepine and sulfamethoxazole by an MBR were systematically examined and compared under near-anoxic (DO'" 0.5 mg/L) and aerobic (DO> 2 mg/L) conditions. Preliminary batch tests confirmed that sulfamethoxazole is amenable to both aerobic and anoxic biotransformation. However, carbamazepine-a known persistent compound-showed degradation only under an anoxic environment. In good agreement with the batch tests, during near-anoxic operation, under a high loading of 750 …

Practice And Prospect Of Fully Mechanised Mininig Technology For Thin Coal Seams Under Complex Conditions In China, Shihao Tu, Fangtian Wang, Yan Lu, Qi Wu, Qingsheng Bai Jan 2011

Practice And Prospect Of Fully Mechanised Mininig Technology For Thin Coal Seams Under Complex Conditions In China, Shihao Tu, Fangtian Wang, Yan Lu, Qi Wu, Qingsheng Bai

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

In China, thin coal seam are rich in resources and complex in conditions, however, the characteristics such as narrow mining space, the low level of mechanised technology, bad working environment and the high cost of mining, directly restrict the development of mining safety and high-efficiency. In thin coal seams with hard gangue which contains concretions of pyrite, LS-DYNA is applied to calculate the rational blasting parameters and carry out the deep-hole pre-splitting blasting technology, the hard gangue is fractured effectively, hence advancing the productivity of thin coal seam mining. In addition, the mining rate is sped up in thin protective …

Experimental Study Of High-Strength Concrete Columns Confined With Different Types Of Mesh Under Eccentric And Concentric Loads, Muhammad N. S Hadi, Hua Zhao Jan 2011

Experimental Study Of High-Strength Concrete Columns Confined With Different Types Of Mesh Under Eccentric And Concentric Loads, Muhammad N. S Hadi, Hua Zhao

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

A new idea is investigated in this study to reduce the cover spalling of high-strength concrete columns: installing relatively cheap materials such as household fly screen and wire mesh in the formwork of RC columns. Three materials were chosen in this study: fiberglass fly mesh (FGFM), standard aluminum fly mesh (SAFM), and 12:7 x 12:7 galvanized steel wire mesh (S12.7 WM). A total of 16 cylindricalspecimens with a length of 925 mm and a diameter of 205 mm were cast and tested under concentric, eccentric, and pure bending loading. The testing results showed that S12.7 WM significantly improved the load-carrying …

Authenticated Key Exchange Under Bad Randomness, Guomin Yang, Shanshan Duan, Duncan Wong, Chik How Tan, Huaxiong Wang Jan 2011

Authenticated Key Exchange Under Bad Randomness, Guomin Yang, Shanshan Duan, Duncan Wong, Chik How Tan, Huaxiong Wang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

We initiate the formal study on authenticated key exchange (AKE) under bad randomness. This could happen when (1) an adversary compromises the randomness source and hence directly controls the randomness of each AKE session; and (2) the randomness repeats in different AKE sessions due to reset attacks. We construct two formal security models, Reset-1 and Reset-2, to capture these two bad randomness situations respectively, and investigate the security of some widely used AKE protocols in these models by showing that they become insecure when the adversary is able to manipulate the randomness. On the positive side, we propose simple but generic …

Influence Of Angular Orientation Of The Embedded Highly Birefringent Fiber On Pmd Changes Under Axial Stress, Daniel Budaszewski, Piotr Lesiak, Robert Plaga, Ginu Rajan, Yuliya Semenova, Gerald Farrell, Anna Boczkowska, Andrzej Domanski, Tomasz Wolinski

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

In the paper we present results of the research on polarization mode dispersion changes inside the polarimetric optical fiber sensors based on highly birefringent optical fibers embedded into composite materials with different angular orientations of the optical axes. Based on measurements made for different types of highly birefringent optical fiber sensors we have shown that strain sensitivities after lamination process are different in comparison to the data obtained before lamination. Our results indicate that polarization mode dispersion in side-hole highly birefringent fibers under axial stress strongly depends on fiber orientation in the composite material suggesting that orientation of the polarization …

Physical And Chemical Ground Improvement For Sustainable Transportation Infrastructure Under Cyclic Loads, Buddhima Indraratna, Cholachat Rujikiatkamjorn, Jayan S. Vinod, Sanjay Nimbalkar Jan 2011

Physical And Chemical Ground Improvement For Sustainable Transportation Infrastructure Under Cyclic Loads, Buddhima Indraratna, Cholachat Rujikiatkamjorn, Jayan S. Vinod, Sanjay Nimbalkar

Railways form one of the major worldwide transportation networks and they continue to provide quick and safe public and freight transportation. In order to compete with other modes of transportation and to meet the ever growing demand of public and freight transport, railway industries face challenges to improve their efficiency and decrease the costs of maintenance and infrastructure. Large cyclic loading from heavy haul and passenger trains often leads to progressive deterioration of the track. The excessive deformations and degradations of the ballast layer and unacceptable differential settlement or pumping of underlying soft and compressible subgrade soils necessitate frequent costly …

Experimental Study On The Effectiveness Of Prefabricated Vertical Drains Under Cyclic Loading, Cholachat Rujikiatkamjorn, Buddhima Indraratna, Guanghui Meng

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

This study is an attempt to investigate the effectiveness of a prefabricated vertical drain (PVD) installed in remoulded soft clay, where a large-scale cyclic triaxial process simulation rig was employed to simulate cyclic loading representing a track environment. The experimental data show that PVD successfully prevents excessive accumulation of pore water pressure during cyclic loading, and their dissipation continues to occur after the load is removed. The findings of this study have direct significance to rail track environments, e.g. in coastal Australia, where PVD installation beneath rail tracks constructed on low-lying estuarine soils has been recently adopted.
