Modular Multilevel Converters With Module-Level Energy Storage For Medium Voltage Applications, Bora Novakovic May 2021

Modular Multilevel Converters With Module-Level Energy Storage For Medium Voltage Applications, Bora Novakovic

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is on Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) converter design and analysis and its integration with energy storage at the low voltage module-level. The developed converter concept and topology can be used in various applications especially for the support of intermittent renewable energy resources. The general converter structure is analyzed and extended to include integrated energy storage suitable but not limited to medium voltage applications. The behavior of the idealized structure is analyzed to obtain equations that govern general converter behavior and identify possible control loops. Detail mathematical switching model is developed for the MMC converter with generalized module structure. …

Numerical And Experimental Investigation Of Performance For Very-Low-Head Micro And Pico Kaplan Hydro-Turbines With Rim-Driven Generators, Ahmad Ibrahim Mohammad Abbas May 2020

Numerical And Experimental Investigation Of Performance For Very-Low-Head Micro And Pico Kaplan Hydro-Turbines With Rim-Driven Generators, Ahmad Ibrahim Mohammad Abbas

Theses and Dissertations

Renewable energy plays a significant role in new power generation worldwide, and hydropower is contributing to 86% of renewable electricity production within all other renewable energy resources. Simultaneously, hydropower shares 83% of U.S. renewable energy capacity and accounts for 77% of actual renewable electricity generation. However, most of the installed hydropower consists of large plants. Much potential hydro generation remains untapped, particularly at lower power and head levels. There is a substantial opportunity worldwide and across the U.S. in specific to add new hydropower generating capabilities at low-head sites such as non-powered dams, canals, and conduits with a water height …

A Study Of Development Of A Micro Hydro Turbine System With A Rim Drive And Air Injection Treatment For Cavitation., Tomoki Sakamoto Aug 2017

A Study Of Development Of A Micro Hydro Turbine System With A Rim Drive And Air Injection Treatment For Cavitation., Tomoki Sakamoto

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents the study of Kaplan hydro turbines system at a very low head and air injection treatment to reduce cavitation happening around a turbine. Regarding the study of Kaplan hydroturbine system, optimization of hydro turbine system with a rim generator to gain a better performance was conducted by CFD and experiment. E-Motors, the partner of this research, is developing an integrated design to simplify manufacturing and installation. The integrated design includes a rim in the outside of the turbine runner to house the electrical generator rotor, namely rim drive. This approach enables a compact and simple assembly without …

A New Paradigm Of Maximizing The Wind And Solar Penetration– A Economical Assessment, Yuming Chen May 2016

A New Paradigm Of Maximizing The Wind And Solar Penetration– A Economical Assessment, Yuming Chen

Theses and Dissertations

Wind and solar energies are the most potential and widely-used renewable energies. But in most cases these energies cannot be maximized because of transmission line capacity and their remote location. Therefore, this thesis proposes a new paradigm which using battery transportation and logistics instead of transmission line, to maximize wind and solar energies. The main focus of this work is to investigate the economical feasibilities of this new paradigm.

In the first part, different models and application are presented. The purpose is finding an appropriate model which can make full use of existing grid resources such as transmission line and …

A New Paradigm Based On Battery Transportation And Logistics To Maximize The Wind And Solar Renewable Penetration – Technical Aspect, Han Jiang May 2016

A New Paradigm Based On Battery Transportation And Logistics To Maximize The Wind And Solar Renewable Penetration – Technical Aspect, Han Jiang

Theses and Dissertations

Concerns about the environmental degradation and global warming have placed greater importance to the development and application of renewable energy in recent years. Stand by energy source side, wind and solar farms have been continuously integrated into the power grids all over the world. Meanwhile on the end user side, not only EV and PHEV have been gaining market share in the automobile industry, but also the battery backup systems for home or industry have been introduced into public view. However, the randomness and intermittency of the renewable energy as well as the lack of transmission capability result in significant …

Virtual Droop Control Framework And Stability Analyses For Microgrids With High Penetration Of Renewables, Ashishkumar Kanubhai Solanki May 2015

Virtual Droop Control Framework And Stability Analyses For Microgrids With High Penetration Of Renewables, Ashishkumar Kanubhai Solanki

Theses and Dissertations

Microgrids can provide the most promising means of integrating large amounts of distributed sources into the power grid and can supply reliable power to critical loads. However, managing distributed sources and loads within a microgrid during island and grid-tie modes and during transitions is a challenge. Stable operation of a microgrid is a concern specifically during the starting of motor loads, switching of large loads, and in presence of high penetration of renewable resources. Hence, a generalized control framework is required to regulate microgrid voltage and frequency, maintain power quality, manage Distributed Generations (DG) and ensure microgrid stability. Several control …

Evaluation And Forecast Of Energy Consumption In Different Sectors Of The United States Using Artificial Neural Networks, Arash Kialashaki Dec 2014

Evaluation And Forecast Of Energy Consumption In Different Sectors Of The United States Using Artificial Neural Networks, Arash Kialashaki

Theses and Dissertations

The United States is a country which consumes a vast amount of energy. In order to keep the development of the United States sustainable (diverse and productive over the time) energy planning should be carried out comprehensively and precisely. This dissertation presents a specific mathematical modeling approach towards energy demand modeling of the United States and forecast future energy demand. To generate more detailed and accurate results, this dissertation investigates the energy demand of each sector separately using the analysis of trend for unique set of independent parameters which affect the energy demand in that sector.

In solving a forecast …

Dc Microgrid Modeling And Energy Storage Placement To Enhance System Stability, Carl Westerby May 2013

Dc Microgrid Modeling And Energy Storage Placement To Enhance System Stability, Carl Westerby

Theses and Dissertations

The work of this thesis represents a joint venture between the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. A DC microgrid is selected for the efficiency benefits, lack of reactive power in the system, and ease of connecting to an AC grid. The system modeling relies on physical parameters and industry standard methods for the estimation of loads and lines. An example model is created for the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee's Campus. Due to the high penetration of renewable energy sources in the example model, system stability is a concern. To help mitigate stability issues, analysis is performed …
