Characterization Of Wellbore Microannuli, Serafin Garcia Fernandez Feb 2018

Characterization Of Wellbore Microannuli, Serafin Garcia Fernandez

Civil Engineering ETDs

Wellbore integrity is a principal concern for the safe and efficient underground storage of hydrocarbons, disposal of various wastes and in oil and gas production. Poor wellbore integrity can lead to leakage and loss of extracted or stored material, and the potential for contamination of groundwater. The microannuli, which is the space between the steel casing and the cement sheath has been identified as a common and critical leakage pathway. There are no data of the actual size or character of microannuli; however, it is possible to estimate the hydraulic aperture of the microannulus from flow measurements at the wellhead. …

Characterization And Modeling Of Asphalt Concrete For Dynamic Properties And Performances, A S M A. Rahman Dec 2017

Characterization And Modeling Of Asphalt Concrete For Dynamic Properties And Performances, A S M A. Rahman

Civil Engineering ETDs

The recently developed mechanistic-empirical pavement design guide (MEPDG, also known as Pavement M-E design method) uses the nationally calibrated, binder viscosity-based dynamic modulus predictive model for the design and analysis of asphalt pavements. In this study, this model is assessed for its appropriateness for asphalt-aggregate mixtures typically used in New Mexico. In essence, this study investigates the predictability issue of complex modulus of New Mexico mixes. A total of 54 Superpave mixes with different aggregate gradations, air voids, and binder grades were collected from the mixing plants and from the pavement construction sites. The loose asphalt mixtures were then compacted, …

Theory, Fabrication, And Experimentation Of Phononic Crystals In Mems At Micro/Nano Scale: Engineering Of Thermal And Rf Phonons To Applications In Thermoelectrics And Microresonators, Seyedhamidreza Alaie Feb 2016

Theory, Fabrication, And Experimentation Of Phononic Crystals In Mems At Micro/Nano Scale: Engineering Of Thermal And Rf Phonons To Applications In Thermoelectrics And Microresonators, Seyedhamidreza Alaie

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

Phononic Crystals (PnCs) are novel materials comprised of a periodic structure of inclusions in a matrix. This periodic arrangement creates phononic bandgaps, and modifies phononic bandstructures of a material. Such a property offers promising applications at the micro and nano scales to engineer acoustic filters, high Q-factor resonators, and thermoelectric properties of materials. Studying PnCs at the micro/nano scale requires specific characterization techniques, which rely on Micro Electro Mechanical Structures (MEMS). This work focuses on the study, and characterization of PnCs using MEMS in view of their prospective applications in thermoelectric materials, microresonators and acoustic filters, and also the prospective …
