Design & Evaluation Of Cooling Systems For Photovoltaic Modules, Peter Leary Apr 2019

Design & Evaluation Of Cooling Systems For Photovoltaic Modules, Peter Leary

Honors Theses

There is a persistent need for further development and implementation of renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar. Due to the increase in global population, the disappearance of fossil fuels, and the reality of climate change, renewable power is needed now more than ever. One such renewable power technology is solar photovoltaic, otherwise known as PV. These modules work via silicon cells which are as semiconductors, outputting electrical energy when incident with solar radiation. This is done by separating electrons and protons within the cell. One of the largest issues with PV technology is that there is a linear …

Maximum Power Point Tracking Device For A Photovoltaic Panel, Betsy Schwartz Jun 2013

Maximum Power Point Tracking Device For A Photovoltaic Panel, Betsy Schwartz

Honors Theses

The operating characteristics of a photovoltaic (PV) solar panel are dependent upon the lighting and temperature conditions, as well as the characteristics of the energy storage device and/or loads that it feeds. PV panels normally operate at a fixed voltage and current for a given load and sunlight condition. The operating conditions will not necessarily produce the maximum possible power output of a solar panel for the set conditions. The efficiency of power delivery from a PV panel can be greatly increased by a Maximum Power Point Tracker (MPPT). An algorithm can be designed to shift the operating value to …

Design And Fabrication Of An Autonomous Solar Powered Airship, Mitchell Van Lee Jun 2011

Design And Fabrication Of An Autonomous Solar Powered Airship, Mitchell Van Lee

Honors Theses

The purpose of the project was to design and build a prototype small scale photovoltaic (PV) powered autonomous airship. The principle reason for the construction of the unmanned airship was to investigate the possibility of using self-guided, lighter-than-air aircraft as an alternative to earth observational satellites for the purposes of terrain mapping and imaging. The necessary electrical energy was produced by single crystal photovoltaic solar cells. The airship was designed to carry an onboard battery in order to provide power generation in the case of intermittent cloud coverage. It was also designed to interface with an Arduino prototyping board which …
