High Performance Thermal Insulation: Silica Aerogels In Construction Technology, Matthew Giarrusso
High Performance Thermal Insulation: Silica Aerogels In Construction Technology, Matthew Giarrusso
Honors Theses
The United States is a world leader in the production and expenditure of energy, accounting for 18% of the total global energy consumption in 2016, 40% of which was used for the heating, cooling, and lighting of commercial and residential buildings. Currently, traditional air-based insulation products are being used in thicker and more numerous layers in an attempt to keep up with contemporary codes and standards. One promising alternative to traditional insulation is silica aerogel. With a remarkably low density and thermal conductivity, silica aerogel could save energy, space, and weight in new and retrofit structures. Silica aerogels are currently …
Application Of A High-Performance Optically Enhanced Solar Thermal Collector System, Timothy H. Cameron
Application Of A High-Performance Optically Enhanced Solar Thermal Collector System, Timothy H. Cameron
Honors Theses
In an effort to make Union College a more environmentally friendly campus, this research project focuses on the application of Union’s liquid-based solar thermal collector system. The motivation for this research project is due to the increasing demand for renewable energy sources in order to decrease our society’s dependence on fossil fuels. The system features nine, 16-tube, evacuated tube solar modules which absorb radiant solar energy from the sun. Through a two loop system, thermal energy is stored in water within two-80 gallon storage tanks. This research project involves the design, construction, and analysis of two applications in order to …
2014 Sae Aero: Systems Engineering, Adam Herzog
2014 Sae Aero: Systems Engineering, Adam Herzog
Honors Theses
Union has participated in the annual SAE Aero Competition for the last 6 consecutive years. The aim of the competition involves the design and construction of an RC aircraft capable of carrying a maximum payload weight as consistently as possible. This report will summarize the methods used to determine shape and size of the final aircraft’s control surfaces, as well as include an analysis on the plane’s performance characteristics. The final design utilizes a 100 inch span main wing with a rear taper and an upright H-tail design. In addition, the horizontal tail has a stabilator in place of a …
Sae Aero Design Project, Angela N. Mclelland
Sae Aero Design Project, Angela N. Mclelland
Honors Theses
The Union College Flying Dutchmen Team aims to compete in the spring 2011, SAE Aero Design® East Competition. This regional event, hosted by the Society of Automotive Engineers International, is a threefold opportunity for teams from around the globe to showcase their understanding of engineering fundamentals. Competing in the SAE Aero Design® competition creates an arena for students to participate in hands-on design, to emphasize technological innovations in a competition setting, and to cooperate in a unique atmosphere where intellectual advancement and teamwork are championed above success. The underlying goal of the SAE Aero Design® competition is to design and …
