The overall goal of the study was to develop a "Virtual Design Studio (VDS)": a software platform for integrated, coordinated and optimized design of green building systems with low energy consumption, high indoor environmental quality (IEQ), and high level of sustainability. My dissertation research was focused on the development of a key VDS component -- an integrated design process and a near-real time performance simulation approach for fast feedbacks at the early stage of the integrated design process.

This has completely transformed the way power grids operate - legacy systems are now being replaced by advanced smart grid infrastructures that attest to better connectivity and increased reliability. Process planning and scheduling (PPS) is an essential and practical topic but a very intractable problem in manufacturing systems. Many research studies use iterative methods to solve such problems; however, they cannot achieve satisfactory results in both quality and computational speed. Other studies formulate scheduling problems as a graph coloring problem (GCP) or its extensions, but these formulations are limited to certain types of scheduling problems. Neuromorphic computing systems refer to the computing architecture inspired by the working mechanism of human brains. The rapidly reducing cost and increasing performance of state-of-the-art computing hardware allows large-scale implementation of machine intelligence models with neuromorphic architectures and opens the opportunity for new applications. One such computing hardware is Intel Xeon Phi coprocessor, which delivers over a TeraFLOP of computing power with 61 integrated processing cores.
