A New Hybrid Support Vector Machine-Wavelet Transform Approach For Estimation Of Horizontal Global Solar Radiation Mar 2015

A New Hybrid Support Vector Machine-Wavelet Transform Approach For Estimation Of Horizontal Global Solar Radiation

Faculty of Engineering University of Malaya

In this paper, a new hybrid approach by combining the Support Vector Machine (SVM) with Wavelet Transform (WT) algorithm is developed to predict horizontal global solar radiation. The predictions are conducted on both daily and monthly mean scales for an Iranian coastal city. The proposed SVM-WT method is compared against other existing techniques to demonstrate its efficiency and viability. Three different sets of parameters are served as inputs to establish three models. The results indicate that the model using relative sunshine duration, difference between air temperatures, relative humidity, average temperature and extraterrestrial solar radiation as inputs shows higher performance than …

A Review Of Survivability And Remedial Actions Of Tidal Current Turbines Mar 2015

A Review Of Survivability And Remedial Actions Of Tidal Current Turbines

Faculty of Engineering University of Malaya

Tidal current energy is one of the most predictable ocean renewable energies. Survivability of the device used to harness tidal power and its remedial actions are critical to ensure a successful power generation. Marine environment is harsh with the continuous attacks of waves, current saline water and microorganism. Support structures are discussed including gravity base, monopile, tripod/piled jacket and floating structure. Extreme weather increases the wave height and current speed to produce high loading at the turbine. Support structure is designed to sustain the loadings from the extreme weather. Protective seabed unit should be included to prevent the seabed scouring. …

Investigating The Surface Tribology Of Roller-Burnished Polymer Using The Fuzzy Rule-Based Approach Jan 2015

Investigating The Surface Tribology Of Roller-Burnished Polymer Using The Fuzzy Rule-Based Approach

Faculty of Engineering University of Malaya

Burnishing is specified as the plastic deformation cold working process applied as surface treatment and smoothing following machining to obtain a superior surface roughness finish. The present experimental study was carried out on roller-burnished polyurethane using a roller burnishing tool. An analysis was done to investigate the effect of burnishing depth, speed, feed rate, and roller width on the surface roughness of the polymer workpiece. Roughness (R-a) prediction was achieved with a fuzzy rule-based system. The results indicate 95% accuracy between the fuzzy predicted roughness values and experimental results. An Accelerated And Accurate Three-Dimensional Ray Tracing Using Red-Black Tree With Facet Mining And Object Bouncing Techniques Jan 2015

An Accelerated And Accurate Three-Dimensional Ray Tracing Using Red-Black Tree With Facet Mining And Object Bouncing Techniques

Faculty of Engineering University of Malaya

Recent trends show that it is a major challenge to predict the exact propagation path accurately and efficiently for three-dimensional (3D) indoor environments. Therefore, this study introduces a new 3D ray tracing algorithm based on a red-black tree with facet mining and object bouncing techniques. The red-black tree data structure offers a faster object searching operation while repeatedly performing intersection tests. On the other hand, extensive ray-facet intersection tests can be eliminated by using object and facet bouncing techniques, whereas the facet mining makes it easier to trace the transmitted ray paths accurately. The proposed method is compared with ray …
