The paper presents the use of Solid Recovered Fuels (SRF) in Chelm Cement Plant (Poland). These types of fuels are produced from non-hazardous waste and can be used for energy recovery in waste co-combustion plants. They are much cheaper compared to primary fuels, so their use in the process of cement clinker burning brings evident economic benefits. Chelm cement plant owned by the CEMEX company is a leader in the use of alternative fuels in Poland. In the years 2005-2011 the amount of co-combustion of alternative fuels in the cement had risen from 107 to 318 thousand tons, and their …

Co-Incineration Of Large Quantities Of Alternative Fuels In A Cement Kiln – The Problem Of Air Pollutant Emissions, Robert Oleniacz, Magdalena Kasietczuk

Robert Oleniacz

Over the last few years, a significant increase in the use of alternative fuels in the Polish cement industry has been observed. These are mainly waste and waste-derived fuels. The national leader in this field is Chełm cement plant (Poland), with the share of alternative fuels in the cement kiln heat balance reaching in 2012 the level of 78.5%. In this paper, an analysis of the emission rate of air pollutants from cement clinkering process in the above-mentioned cement plant in the years 1998–2012 was carried out, using the results of continuous and periodic measurements. The compliance with the emission …

The clinker burning plant is ideally suited for processing a wide variety of hazardous waste materials. High temperatures existing in cement kilns (ca. 1350-1450 Centigrades in the burning zone) as well as long gas-residence time (ca. 6-10 s) provide potentially excellent conditions for destruction of toxic organic compounds. Non-volatile compounds are retained in the solid phase and built into the clinker. A lot of other (for example acid gases) can also be absorbed by alkaline solid phase. Old pesticide wastes present a big problem in Poland now. They can be use as waste-derived fuels in cement kilns, especially in the …

Pesticide Waste Incineration In The Wet Process Cement Kiln, Marian Mazur, Robert Oleniacz, Marek Bogacki, Stanisław Słupek Jul 2000

Pesticide Waste Incineration In The Wet Process Cement Kiln, Marian Mazur, Robert Oleniacz, Marek Bogacki, Stanisław Słupek

Robert Oleniacz

The presentation discusses the problem of pesticide wastes in Poland that have been accumulated underground in concrete graveyards or bunkers. Their progressive unsealing poses a significant health risk to people due to groundwater, soil and air pollution. There are not many of professional hazardous waste incineration plants in Poland, therefore, the paper proposes the use of cement kiln for thermal treatment of such waste. Polish cement industry is interested in utilization of various wastes (e.g. in the capacity of alternative fuels) in the process connected with the cement clinker production in rotary kilns. High temperatures existing in cement kilns (ca. …

Robert Oleniacz

The paper presents a review of emissions of main gaseous pollutants (including acidic constituents), some organic compounds (including dioxins and furans), particulates and heavy metals from cement kilns burning waste fuels.

A widely employed method to reduce the cost of cement production is the substitution of traditional fuels used in cement kilns with alternative and waste-derived fuels. Cement industry offers the most acceptable method of waste (especially hazardous waste) thermal treatment and disposal at much lower cost than commercial incinerators. Characteristic for cement kilns high temperatures and long residence time of exhaust gas ensure almost complete destruction of organic compounds …

Spalanie Odpadów Niebezpiecznych W Piecach Cementowych. Część 2. Destrukcja Paliwa I Emisja Zanieczyszczeń, Robert Oleniacz

Robert Oleniacz

Conditions occurring in cement rotary kilns assure high destruction and removal efficiency (DRE) of the most stable substances, efficacious dry sorption of acid gases in the alkaline raw meal and heavy metals bounding in the clinker. Adequate operation of hazardous waste incineration in the process connected with cement clinker production does not cause increasing air pollutant emissions. Magnitude of the emissions often does not depend of this if there are using wastes in the cement kiln at all. The work presents a review of DRE levels and stack emissions for selected flue-gas constituents during hazardous waste co-combustion in cement kilns …
