The most troublesome air pollutant emissions that occur in rural areas are associated with the operation of domestic furnaces (mainly during the heating season) and the processes of open burning of plant residues (mainly outside the heating season). In the paper some measurement results of number and size for aerosols particles suspended in air achieved using infrared particle sizer IPS-P (Kamika Instruments) with isokinetic air sampling method were presented. In IPS-P analyzer, with measuring range from 0,4 to 300 μm, is applied optical/electronic measurement method which is determined by dimensions of measurement space by aerosols particles motions in a parallel radiation beam. The research was conducted on the roof of four-storey building in Krakow for various meteorological conditions. The gravimetric method of measuring PM10 particulate concentration in air is the reference method used in Poland and in the European Union. To get information on mass fractions of lower diameter particulates (e.g. PM5, PM2,5 or PM1) one usually has to apply various pre-sorters (most often of the impact type). Legislation changes in Poland concerning the protective zones (created around industrial plants particularly harmful to the environment) were presented in the paper. The paper presents the results of a comprehensive assessment of air pollution in the city of Nowy Sącz (Poland). This involved determining the emissions of selected pollutants from various sources with their percentages of the total emission and immission on the area under consideration. As a result of measurement of concentrations of particulate matter and benzo(a)pyrene in several parts of the city were verified results of theoretical calculations and determined the size of the inflow of pollutants from outside the area in question.

The paper presents an approach for assessing the impact of road transport on the level of ozone concentrations in the ground layer of the atmosphere. The developed method consists in emission inventory on the analyzed area for road transport and calculations using the model of chemical reactions in the troposphere.

Using this method it is possible to display waveforms daily ozone concentrations in the air, and evaluate the effectiveness of the decisions related to the prevention of occurrence of photochemical smog in urban and industrial agglomerations.

The paper presents the results of an inventory of sources of air emissions from the city of Nowy Sacz (Poland) with regard to pollutant emissions from road transport, industrial processes, combustion plants and low-emissions from household furnaces.
