Using Parameter Estimation Techniques With A Simple Model Of A Diaphragm-Type Electrolyzer To Predict The Electrical Energy Cost For Naoh Production, John Van Zee, Ralph E. White Mar 2015

Using Parameter Estimation Techniques With A Simple Model Of A Diaphragm-Type Electrolyzer To Predict The Electrical Energy Cost For Naoh Production, John Van Zee, Ralph E. White

Ralph E. White

Predictions of the electrical energy cost for NaOH production are determined as a function of the independent operating variables and diaphragm characterizing properties. The predictions are based on data from a statistically designed experiment, a simple model of a diaphragm-type electrolyzer, a simple model of the cell voltage losses, and parameter estimation techniques. The data were obtained over a sufficiently large range of operating conditions so that the resulting design equation may be industrially useful. The simple model of the diaphragm is based on the mass transport of the hydroxyl ion, a linear potential gradient, and is presented in terms …

Application Of Porous Electrode Theory On Metal Hydride Electrodes In Alkaline Solution, G. Zheng, Branko N. Popov, Ralph E. White Mar 2015

Application Of Porous Electrode Theory On Metal Hydride Electrodes In Alkaline Solution, G. Zheng, Branko N. Popov, Ralph E. White

Ralph E. White

Porous electrode theory was applied to estimate the exchange current density, the polarization resistance, and symmetry factor for LaNi4.27Sn0.24 hydride electrode in alkaline solution. The exchange current density, polarization resistance, and symmetry factor were determined from polarization curves which were obtained at low overpotentials.

Characterization Of Sr‐Doped Lamno3 And Lacoo3 As Cathode Materials For A Doped Lagao3 Ceramic Fuel Cell, Kevin Huang, Man Feng, John B. Goodenough, Michael Schmerling Feb 2015

Characterization Of Sr‐Doped Lamno3 And Lacoo3 As Cathode Materials For A Doped Lagao3 Ceramic Fuel Cell, Kevin Huang, Man Feng, John B. Goodenough, Michael Schmerling

Energy dispersive spectrometry line scan and ac impedance spectroscopy were used in this study to investigate the chemical reactions between two cathode materials, La0.84Sr0.16MnO3 (LSM), La0.5Sr0.5CoO3-δ (LSC), and the electrolyte La0.9Sr0.1Ga0.8Mg0.2O2.85 (LSGM). Significant interdiffusions of Co into LSGM and Ga into LSC were found at an LSC/LSGM interface even at relatively low fabrication temperatures. In contrast, only small interdiffusions of Mn into LSGM and Ga into LSM were detected at the LSM/LSGM interface even though it was fired at 1470°C. The …

Sr‐ And Ni‐Doped Lacoo3 And Lafeo3 Perovskites: New Cathode Materials For Solid‐Oxide Fuel Cells, Kevin Huang, Hee Y. Lee, John B. Goodenough Feb 2015

Sr‐ And Ni‐Doped Lacoo3 And Lafeo3 Perovskites: New Cathode Materials For Solid‐Oxide Fuel Cells, Kevin Huang, Hee Y. Lee, John B. Goodenough

Kevin Huang

An improved cathode material for a solid‐oxide fuel cell would be a mixed electronic and oxide‐ion conductor with a good catalytic activity for oxygen reduction at an operating temperature T op ≥ 700°C and a thermal expansion matched to that of the electrolyte and interconnect. We report on the properties of Sr‐ and Ni‐doped LaCoO3 and LaFeO3 perovskites that meet these criteria. Single‐phase regions were determined by X‐ray diffraction, and thermogravimetric analysis measurements were used to obtain the temperatures above which oxygen loss, and hence oxide‐ion conductivity, occurs. The conductivity and Seebeck measurements indicate the coexistence of both …

The Development Of Conductive Composite Surfaces By A Diffusion-Limited In Situ Polymerization Of Pyrrole In Sulfonated Polystyrene Ionomers, M. Cristina De Jesus, Robert Weiss, Yuping Chen Jul 2014

The Development Of Conductive Composite Surfaces By A Diffusion-Limited In Situ Polymerization Of Pyrrole In Sulfonated Polystyrene Ionomers, M. Cristina De Jesus, Robert Weiss, Yuping Chen

Robert Weiss

Electrically conductive composite surfaces were prepared by a diffusion-controlled in situ polymerization of pyrrole in the surface layer of sulfonated polystyrene ionomer films. Premolded films of the ionomer sulfonic acid derivatives were sequentially immersed in aqueous solutions of pyrrole and FeCl3, and polymerization occurred only where both the monomer and the oxidant were present. The penetration of the polypyrrole (PPy) into the film was controlled by varying the immersion time in the monomer solution. The amount of PPy produced depended on the immersion time of the film in the monomer and the degree of sulfonation of the ionomer. Surface conductivities …

Roca Spur Bridge: The Implementation Of An Innovative Deicing Technology, Christopher Tuan Mar 2014

Roca Spur Bridge: The Implementation Of An Innovative Deicing Technology, Christopher Tuan

Christopher Y. Tuan

The heated deck of Roca Spur Bridge is the first implementation in the world using conductive concrete for deicing. Conductive concrete is a concrete mix containing a certain amount of electrically conductive components in a regular concrete matrix, designed to enable conduction of electricity. Due to its electrical resistance, conductive concrete can generate enough heat to prevent ice formation on a paved surface when connected to a power source.

Absence Of Ferromagnetism And Strong Orbital Coupling In Carrier Rich Zn/Sub 1-X/In/Sub X/Co/Sub 0.075/O, Xiaolin Wang, Germanas Peleckis, S X. Dou May 2008

Absence Of Ferromagnetism And Strong Orbital Coupling In Carrier Rich Zn/Sub 1-X/In/Sub X/Co/Sub 0.075/O, Xiaolin Wang, Germanas Peleckis, S X. Dou

Xiaolin Wang

Polycrystalline samples of Zn/sub 1-x/In/sub x/Co/sub 0.075/O (0.010/spl les/x/spl les/0.020) diluted magnetic semiconductors were prepared by the rapid oxalate decomposition technique. Phase purity is analyzed by means of X-ray diffraction technique and structures are refined by Rietveld refinement technique. Bulk conductivity of the polished pellets was measured by two-point probe technique at 295 K. Magnetic properties were analyzed with magnetic property measurement system. Samples show paramagnetic behavior and Curie-Weiss fitting at high temperature range gave effective magnetic moment of Co ions. Magnetization behavior caused by applied magnetic field was also investigated. High itinerant carrier concentration was achieved but no ferromagnetism …
