Facilities & Campus Services, Sustainable UMass and Campus Planning support sustainability and energy conservation initiatives by providing in-house resources to campus staff as well as designers and contractors working with the University. The UMass Amherst Green Building Guidelines provide a framework for approaching new construction and major renovation projects at UMass Amherst that are undergoing LEED certification by focusing the conversation on green building aspects that are most important to the campus. They are intended to be the beginning of a dynamic conversation between designers, environmental consultants and constructors, university stakeholders, and users of new high performance buildings.

This work demonstrates the design and fabrication of an all cyclo-olefin polymer based microfluidic device capable of capturing magnetic beads and performing electrochemical detection in a series of gold electrodes. The size of chip is of a microscope slide and features six independent measuring cells formultianalyte detection purposes. The aim of this work is to show that rapid prototyping techniques can be instrumental in the development of novel bioassays, particularly in clinical diagnosis applications. We show the successful determination of troponin-T, a cardiac disease marker, in the clinically relevant range of 0.05–1.0 ng/mL. This methodology achieves a detection limit of …

Design Considerations Towards The Construction Of Hybrid Floating Brush Seal (Hfbs), S. Lattime, Minel Braun, Fred Choy
Design Considerations Towards The Construction Of Hybrid Floating Brush Seal (Hfbs), S. Lattime, Minel Braun, Fred Choy
Fred K. Choy
The hybrid floating brush seal (HFBS) represents an advance in brush seal technology by combining brush seal and film riding face seal technologies to create a hybrid seal that allows both axial and radial excursions of the sealed shaft without damage to seal integrity. At the same time, it eliminates interface surface speeds between the rotor and the brush bristles. This accomplishment is possible because the brush seal, which forms the primary seal, rotates with the shaft, while floating against a hydrodynamic face seal surface, which makes up the secondary seal. The present paper presents continuation work (Int J of …

A Survey Of What Customers Want In A Cell Phone Design, Chen Ling, Wonil Hwang, Gavriel Salvendy
A Survey Of What Customers Want In A Cell Phone Design, Chen Ling, Wonil Hwang, Gavriel Salvendy
Dr. Chen Ling
The cell phone is an information appliance that has been widely used. It provides instant access to information and makes people more ‘connected’. The objective of our study is to investigate the relationship among the design features of the cell phone and identify the most important design features and design factors. In our survey study, we asked 1,006 college students using a 7-point Likert scale structured questionnaire to evaluate their preference of the design features and overall satisfaction of their current cell phone. Nine design factors were derived. Ten cell phone design features and five design factors that significantly impact …
Social And Economic Sustainability, Jason Sargent, Khanjan Mehta, Katina Michael
Social And Economic Sustainability, Jason Sargent, Khanjan Mehta, Katina Michael
Professor Katina Michael
But what about long-term stability in developing nations? For example, as we strive to mainstream alternate energy sources and make them accessible in resource poor communities [ ], how do we think beyond the technological and economic dimensions and ensure respect for social, political and environmental imperatives? Computers, including the tiny but powerful ones on cell phones can be game-changers, but they will not save lives directly. They cannot be eaten by a starving population. And then, they need to be serviced and maintained. Jason, along with Katina’s husband Michael, visited and taught Karen refugee students in camps and remote …
A New Low-Profile Inverted A-Shaped Patch Antenna For Multi-Band Operations
A New Low-Profile Inverted A-Shaped Patch Antenna For Multi-Band Operations
Faculty of Engineering University of Malaya
This paper presents the design and analysis of a compact modified inverted-A shape multi-band patch antenna for WiMAX and C-band telecommunication satellite applications. The proposed antenna has simple geometrical structure which consist of 20 mm x 20 mm radiating patch with slot loading and fed by 4 mm long microstrip line. The proposed antenna is designed and analyzed by using commercially available full-wave 3D high frequency electromagnetic simulator namely Ansys HFSS. The optimized design of the proposed multi-band patch antenna is fabricated on 1.6 mm thick fiberglass polymer resin dielectric material substrate with reduced ground plane by using in-house PCB …
