CoFe/PtMn/CoFe films were deposited on seed layers of Ru or NiFeCr with CoFe film compositions being either Co-10 at. %Fe or Co-16 at. %Fe. Eight periods of the CoFe/PtMn/CoFe trilayers were also prepared. The magnetic properties and ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) of these films were characterized with vibrating-sample magnetometer, and field-sweep FMR system at X band (∽9.5 GHz). The Ru-seeded CoFe/PtMn/CoFe sandwich films show excellent magnetic softness with a low hard axis coercivity of 2-4 Oe, an easy axis Mr/Ms of >98%, and a significantly enhanced in-plane anisotropy of 57-123 Oe when CoFe layer thickness is above 200 …

Nanocrystalline structured films of the alloy Ni₁₁Co₁₁Fe₆₆Zr₇B₄Cu₁ were deposited by pulsed laser ablation deposition onto fused quartz substrates. A substrate temperature of 300°C was found to produce films consisting of body-centered-cubic (bcc) metallic grains suspended in an amorphous matrix. The bcc grain size ranged from 5 - 8 nm for substrate temperatures up to 300°C. Measured values of coercivity were consistently below 4 Oe for films having a saturation magnetization, as 4π Ms, of ∽16 kG with in- plane uniaxial anisotropy fields of 25 to 30 Oe. The ferromagnetic resonance peak- to- peak derivative linewidth was measured to be 34 …

Varying amounts of boron were added to the host FeGa alloy to investigate its impact upon local atomic structure and magnetic and microwave properties. The impact of B upon the local atomic structure in FeGaB films was investigated by extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) analysis. The EXAFS fitting results revealed a contraction of lattice parameters with the introduction of B. The Debye-Waller factor determined from EXAFS fitting increases as a function of boron addition and abruptly changes during the structural evolution from crystalline to amorphous that occurs near 9% B. Upon the onset of this transition the static and …

The magnetic, microwave, and the atomic structure properties of (Fe₀.₇Co₀.₃)1-xBx sputtered films on glass substrates were investigated. The addition of boron induced a decrease in coercivity and ferromagnetic resonance linewidth. The amorphous structure was formed at x ∽0.075. Extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) of Fe and Co showed the reduced Fourier transform (FT) amplitude, and increased Debye-Waller factors as x was increased, indicating the increased disorder due to the thermal and structural displacements. Possible Fe-B bonding was observed with a reduced bond length, which indicates boron atoms' preference for staying in the interstitial sites in bcc unit cell.

Vincent G. Harris

Hexagonal barium ferrite (BaFe₁₂O₁₉) thin films were grown at the atomic scale by alternating target laser ablation deposition (ATLAD) of orthorhombic BaFe₂O₄ and rhombohedral α-Fe₂O₃ on < 001 > Al₂O₃ substrates. Crystallographic, magnetic, and microwave properties of the ATLAD films were determined to be comparable with single crystal quality bulk and films of BaFe₁₂O₁₉ produced by other techniques. The ability to deposit high quality hexagonal ferrite thin films by utilizing multiple targets of different chemical compositions in the deposition routine provides unique opportunities to control the ionic distribution in the unit cell of this important class of ferrite materials.

Magnetic And Microwave Properties Of Ion-Beam-Sputtered Amorphous Fexco80-Xb₁₅Si5 Films, V. G. Harris, S. A. Oliver, W. B. Nowak, C. Vittoria

Vincent G. Harris

Magnetically soft amorphous films of FeₓCO₈₀₋ₓB₁₅Si₅ (x = 0,6,23,40,70,80) were ion beam sputter deposited onto fused quartz for static and microwave magnetic characterization. Films ranged in thickness from 220 to 260 nm and were deposited at rates of 0.1-0.2 nm/s. Saturation magnetization, coercivity, and loop squareness values were extracted from hysteresis loops generated by a vibrating sample magnetometer. Ferromagnetic resonance measurements were taken using a 9.5-GHz cavity with the applied magnetic field both parallel and perpendicular to the plane of the film, yielding values for the g factor, anisotropy field, effective magnetization, and linewidth. Well resolved quadratic spin-wave resonance spectra …

Magnetic And Microwave Magnetic Properties Of Barium Hexaferrite Permanent Magnet Films Having The C-Axis In The Film Plane, S. D. Yoon, C. Vittoria, S. A. Oliver

Carmine Vittoria

Thick (1-14 μm) films of ferrimagnetic barium hexaferrite (BaFe₁₂O₁₉ or BaM) having the c-axis ([0001]) in the film plane were deposited by pulsed laser deposition onto a-plane (1120) sapphire (Al₂O₃) substrates, and were found to have a (1010) orientation. Torque and magnetization measurements show these films are permanent magnets with easy magnetization direction in the plane of the film. Ferrimagnetic resonance (FMR) spectra exhibited linewidths of 1.00-1.40 kOe, where low-field FMR measurements do not show uniform mode broadening due to the formation of multiple domains. All film parameters were affected by the large stress present in these films due to …

Vincent G. Harris

First principles band structure calculations suggest that the preferential occupation of Ni2+ ions on the tetrahedral sites in NiFe₂O₄ would lead to an enhancement of the exchange integral and subsequently the Néel temperature and magnetization. To this end, we have deposited NiFe₂O₄films on MgO substrates by pulsed laser deposition. The substrate temperature was varied from 700 to 900°C at 5 mTorr of O₂ pressure. The films were annealed at 1000°C for different times prior to their characterization. X-ray diffraction spectra showed either (100) or (111) orientation with the spinel structure dependent on the substrate orientation. Magnetic studies showed a magnetization …

Microwave And Magnetic Properties Of Double-Sided Hexaferrite Films On (111) Magnesium Oxide Substrates, S. G. Wang, S. D. Yoon, C. Vittoria

Carmine Vittoria

We have deposited hexaferrite films of BaFe₁₂O₁₉ on both sides of a magnesium oxide, (111) MgO, substrate by the liquid phase epitaxy (LPE) deposition technique. The procedure entailed the deposition of seed layers of BaFe₁₂O₁₉ onto the substrate by laser ablation deposition and then dipping of the substrate into a molten flux. Whereas the seed layers were the order of 0.5 μm, the total thickness after LPE deposition was ∽45 μm. The ferrimagnetic resonance linewidth at 60 GHz, 27 Oe, is as low as it has ever been measured before in BaFe₁₂O₁₉ to the best of our knowledge. The static …
