Artificial neural networks trained as intelligent controllers can easily accommodate the non-linearities and time dependencies of non-linear, dynamic systems. However, they require large training time and large number of neurons to deal with complex problems. Taking benefit of the characteristics of a generalized neuron (GN), that requires much smaller training data and shorter training time, a generalized neuron based adaptive power system stabilizer (GNAPSS) is proposed. It consists of a GN as an predictor, that predicts the plant dynamics, and a GN as a controller to damp low frequency oscillations. Results show that the proposed GNAPSS can provide a consistently …

At the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Skudai campus, Communication System is a core subject offered to senior students of the Electrical Engineering Undergraduate Program. The student enrolment is the largest. This paper describes the continual quality improvement performance measured for the learning process of the students. Cooperative Learning (CL) technique has been successively introduced, a serious continuous effort in implementing alternative teaching method to enhance student learning process and inculcate generic skills that have been noticeably lacked among students and recent graduates. Voltage-variable attenuators (VVAs) enable gain adjustment in a wide range of applications, including in cable-television (CATV), satellite-television (SATV) systems, and even test equipment and measurement systems. The PI VVA configuration using PIN diodes is ubiquitous in CATV and SATV systems owing to its low part count, small size, constant impedance, high linearity, and multi-decade bandwidth. Presently, there is a great pressure to miniaturize this VVA in order to shrink end-product size. To miniaturize this class of VVAs, we integrated four diodes into a five-pin, leadfree SOT-25 surface mount package. The over sampling technique has been shown to increase the SNR and is used in many high performance system such as in the ADC for audio and DAT systems. This paper presents the design of the decimation and its VLSI implementation which is the sub-component in the over sampling technique. Digital Decimation process plays an important task in communication system. It mostly is applied in transceiver when the frequency reduction is required. However, the decimation process for sigma delta modulator is considered in this research work. The proposed design was simulated using MATLAB software and implemented by hardware description language in Xilinx environment. Furthermore, the proposed advance arithmetic unit is applied to improve the system efficiency.

The recursive and non-recursive comb filters are commonly used as decimators for the sigma delta modulators. This paper presents the analysis and design of low power and high speed comb filters. The comparison is made between the recursive and the non-recursive comb filters with the focus on high speed and saving power consumption. Design procedures and examples are given by using Matlab and Verilog HDL for both recursive and non-recursive comb filter with emphasis on frequency response, transfer function and register width. The recursive comb filters or Cascaded Integrator Comb filter (CIC) are commonly used as decimators for the sigma delta modulators. This paper presents the VLSI implementation, analysis and design of high speed CIC filters which are based on a low-pass filter. These filters are used in the signal decimation which has the effect on reducing the sampling rate.
