Artificial neural networks trained as intelligent controllers can easily accommodate the non-linearities and time dependencies of non-linear, dynamic systems. However, they require large training time and large number of neurons to deal with complex problems. Taking benefit of the characteristics of a generalized neuron (GN), that requires much smaller training data and shorter training time, a generalized neuron based adaptive power system stabilizer (GNAPSS) is proposed. It consists of a GN as an predictor, that predicts the plant dynamics, and a GN as a controller to damp low frequency oscillations. Results show that the proposed GNAPSS can provide a consistently …

Voltage-variable attenuators (VVAs) enable gain adjustment in a wide range of applications, including in cable-television (CATV), satellite-television (SATV) systems, and even test equipment and measurement systems. The PI VVA configuration using PIN diodes is ubiquitous in CATV and SATV systems owing to its low part count, small size, constant impedance, high linearity, and multi-decade bandwidth. Presently, there is a great pressure to miniaturize this VVA in order to shrink end-product size. To miniaturize this class of VVAs, we integrated four diodes into a five-pin, leadfree SOT-25 surface mount package. This paper describes the prototype VVA's design, fabrication and experimental results. …

Although directional antennas have been used in mobile communications systems for quite a long time, realistic applications of directional or smart antennas in wireless ad hoc network have emerged just in recent years. Directional antennas provide numerous benefits, such as higher gains, increased transmission range and low interferences. Wireless medium access schemes play a crucial role in ensuring the efficient and fair sharing of wireless resources.
