The magneto-optical properties of a hybrid metal-dielectric structure consisting of a one-dimensional gold grating on top of a magnetic waveguide layer are studied experimentally and theoretically. It is demonstrated that a magnetic field applied in the longitudinal configuration (in the plane of the magnetic film and perpendicular to the slits in the gold grating) to the metal-dielectric structure modifies the field distribution of the optical modes and thus changes the mode excitation conditions. In the optical far field, this manifests in the alteration of the optical transmittance or reflectance when the structure becomes magnetized. This magneto-optical effect is shown to …

Experimental investigation results for the magnetic circular dichroism spectrum (MCD) of a photonic crystal (PC) are presented. We found that in the vicinity of the transmission peak within the photonic bandgap and also near the bandgap edges, the circular dichroism is measurable even in the absence of any applied magnetic field. The application of magnetic field leads to generating an additional MCD signal measurable at the wavelengths near the “defect mode” transmittance line.

We develop and characterise new high-performance nano-engineered magneto-optic materials for use in laser-microscopy- based magnetic field visualisers featuring high sensitivity and resolution, low cost and small size. This type of visualisers will make it possible for forensic experts to recover erased data previously stored in high- and ultrahigh-density magnetic disks and hard disk drives.

Magnetooptical properties of magnetic photonic crystals have been investigated in the view of their possible applications for the modern integrated-optics devices. A "transfer matrices" formalism was expanded for the case of oblique light incidence on the periodic nanoscaled magnetic multilayered systems. Several new effects such as the Faraday effect dependence on the incidence angle and the tunability of the bandgap defect modes spectral location by external magnetic fields were found. Several possibilities of one-dimensional magnetic photonic crystals applications for the optical devices are discussed. Initial steps towards the practical implementation of the proposed devices are reported.

We prepare an all-garnet multilayer film structure by sandwiching a magneto-soft garnet material in between two magneto-hard garnet materials with high bismuth substitution levels using RF magnetron sputtering technique and investigate the microstructure and the effects of magnetostatic inter-layer coupling on magnetic properties. Both types of the Bi-substituted magneto-optic garnet materials used possess excellent optical, magnetic and magneto-optical properties suitable for the application in different new and emerging technologies in optics and photonics. Garnet layers of composition type Bi2Dy1Fe4Ga1O12 have strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and Bi1.8Lu1.2Fe3.6Al1.4O12 magneto-soft layer features magnetization behavior similar to that of in-plane magnetized films. The all-garnet …
